“….Claire Rousay is based in San Antonio, Texas. Her music zeroes in on personal emotions and the minutiae of everyday life – voicemails, haptics, environmental recordings, stopwatches, whispers and conversations – exploring and maybe “exploding” their significance. Stylistically Rousay draws on domestic musique concrete, voice recordings, percussion and multi-instrumentalism. She has built up an extensive body of work in a relatively short time, proving herself to be a most intruiguing contemporary sound artist. WORM is delighted to welcome her here for a residency and a gig…¨

    1. sometimes i feel like i have no friends

Info: This piece is loosely based on the live performance I did at WORM. Many of the same texts, samples, and forms were used in both the live and recorded versions of this piece. The recorded version, which is being broadcasted, features synthesizers, guitars, and field recordings that the live performance did not. This is due to the abundant resources the studio at WORM has. Thematically, the composition revolves around the idea of friendship, what makes it good/bad/valid.

    Credits:

Claire Rousay (BMI) – electronics, field recordings, guitar, synthesizer, voice.
Emily Harper Scott (BMI)  – piano.
youtube samples from – Defying Odds Donnelly, CAMELOT331.
    Produced @ Worm, november 2021

#413. Geluidskunst, radiofonische audio-non-visuele misverstanden en vondsten. Met Jacco Weener.

    2. Obertura y primera entrada.

By Salvador Dali & Igor Wakhevitch.

    MORE INFO:

    Ik, Jacco Weener.

This piece is inspired by recollections and vague remembrances of rock and roll music from my childhood. This childhood was in The Hague (The Netherlands), the city that is the centre of many things. In many aspects it was the centre of European occult sciences (See Fredrick V of the Palatinate who took refuge in The Hague after being ousted as the king of Bohemia, also the influence of huguenots), but also the birthplace of “Indo-rock”, one of the first Dutch rock and roll phenomenon influenced by Indonesian culture combined with Martial sounds from USA military bases.
It is a mental puzzle piece of the idea of rock and roll, not reality, and then performed in stream. To amplify the working class mysticism element of it and the idea of the ritual as pure entertainment. From a love of outsider rnr music. I believe many things that are considered hidden are now actually present, but in a different way. In many ways considered low-culture. Squats and brothels, the afromented rock and roll music, evangelical preachers. They are now the spiritual reality.
    All sounds by Jacco Weener.

    Produced by radioworm/Lukas Simonis.

    1. Montreal Tape Run (CKUT)

The Montréal Tape Run was a project spearheaded by crustaces tapes in collaboration with Berlin’s Staaltape, whose Berlin Tape Run series inspired the Montréal version. A cassette tape circulated from hand to hand across the island of Montréal in September 2013. 10 individuals were involved. Each runner received the tape, recorded a few minutes of sound on it, and transferred it to the next runner. This edition of Radia features 8 of the 10.

Pieces of sound off the Montréal Tape Run:

1- Magali Babin: Archives 1989-99   – tape recorders : 1 realistic, 1 talkboy deluxe, 3 general electric, 1 répondeur radio shack. start 1 après l’autre. durée de la pièce. stop 1 après l’autre.

2- Alain Lefebvre : piece for crustacés tapes 2012    –  tape deck output, pedals, tapedeck input (window).

5- Martin Tetrault: à rebours, voyager 1      – source: “message from earth”, “sounds from earth” 1 disque en or 12″ installé dans le sonde voyager 1.  méthode : montage audionumérique transfert sur machine à cassette califone 4530.

5- donna silicon : rainbow banana.

6- GRKZGL: villeray, sauce western (prise 4)bo^tie à ressorts, fuzz, égalisateurs, etc.

    7- N. Tobin: tape worm.

Copies of the Montréal Tape Run are available through crustacés tapes in exchange for a postcard or a present sent to: 4555 rue Pontiac Montrea, Québec H2J 2T2.

    2. SAKRA!2013 by Marufura Fufunjiru, Johannes Raggam, Christian F. Schiller, Nikos Zachariadis (Radio Helsinki)

SAKRA!2013, found itself on an acoustic search at St. Andrä Church in Graz/Austria on 1/3/13. The installative composition by Marufura Fufunjiru, Johannes Raggam, Christian F. Schiller and Nikos Zachariadis    was    sent    via    numerous    FM- Transmitters to different radios spread across the church, which led to individual tonal responses. An abstract and concentrated examination of the subject luck/bad luck.

    1. Concert4ghosts by Ralf Wendt.

The American composer Jason Freeman gave us the permission to use his online-violin-tool to play a concert for ghosts. So i tried to play with this and noises from the nights for ghosts. The voices gave Brian and Sarah Catling from Oxford. Let them in.

Ralf Wendt is living in Halle in East Germany and playing with animal voices, human voices and radio.

    2. Fish are jumpin’ by Marine Quiniou (Radio Grenouille).

Improvisation. Clarinet and programmed IT device.

We talk about meetings and dialogues. Time is stretching, transposed and staggered tones overlap and answer back one to another. Between the lines, a blending of frivolity, gravity, curiosity and complicity toward the unknown.

Sound recordings and IT patch have been realised within the framework of an artistic and research residence – GMEM, Marseille.

Marine Quiniou is a musician, composer and web designer. She experiments musical writing, research around digital and interactive instruments and e-book.

#410. Onafhankelijke geluidskunst, radiofonische projecten en andere audio-non-visuele misverstanden en vondsten. Met klankkunst van Lasse-Marc Riek en Johnny Chang.

    1. FUER GIESELA by Lasse-Marc Riek.

Listen. Closely. Fall in love with the ants hurrying over the ground. The wind. And the rain. The sounds. And their own music. That is everywhere. Full of memories. Of the past. Of the present. And the future.
Yes: this is a love song. Perhaps not the one you’ve expected. But then: listen. Again. Closely. To the sounds. And their own music. That is everywhere.
And giesela? Who knows. She might be out there. Im gruenen. Les hommes n’en sauront rienÉ.

    LASSE-MARC RIEK,
is an artist mainly working in the field of sound art, acoustic ecology and related interdisciplinary research, including cooperations with other artists as well as scientist. He is also the co-founder of GRUENREKORDER, an outstanding label for phonography, sound art and field recordings.

    2. Taiwan Old-New Times by Johnny Chang.

In the gentlest and least signposted of ‘city symphonies’, albeit one which transfigures the field recording toward the overheard musicality of the everyday, Berlin based composer Johnny Chang takes us on an extended soundwalk around the changed urbanscape of his Taiwan childhood. As Johnny says of the piece:
ÒField recordings captured in Taiwan, from immediate vicinity of childhood home in the city to the countryside.

    (in order of appearance) :

Street market vendors chatter and canned pop music punctuate.
Traffic sounds originate from the intersection directly at the corner of my family home – pretty much a constant background sound.
Ebb and flow of Kaohsiung city.
Repetition of life – signified by various type of drones surrounding us.

    Johnny Chang:

Berlin-based composer-performer Johnny Chang engages in extended explorations surrounding the relationships of sound/silence and the in-between areas of improvisation, composition, performance and listening.  Johnny is part of the Wandelweiser composers collective, and works with: Antoine Beuger, Lucio Capece, Jamie Drouin, JŸrg Frey, Christian Kesten, Hannes Lingens, Radu Malfatti, Koen Nutters, Morten J Olsen, Michael Pisaro, Derek Shirley, Stefan Thut. His articulated performances have been featured in festivals, residencies and experimental music series in both Europe, North America and New Zealand, from Sonic Acts (Amsterdam), ReiheM (Cologne), Wandelweiser Klangraum Series (DŸsseldorf), Hšrbar (Hamburg), Klang im Turm (Munich), The Wulf (Los Angeles), Q-O2 workspace (Brussels), Loop-Line (Tokyo), Umlaut festival (Berlin&Paris) to various experimental music series/venues in Berlin such as Ausland, Labor Sonor, Quiet Cue, NK, West Germany. Since November 2010, Johnny Chang and Koen Nutters have co-curated Konzert Minimal presenting performances and events centered around the music of the Wandelweiser group.

#409. Onafhankelijke geluidskunst, radiofonische projecten en andere audio-non-visuele misverstanden en vondsten. Met Renata Roman en L$D Fundraiser.

    1. Native by Renata Roman for Resonance FM.

At a time when we witnessed the worsening situation of Brazilian Indians in various parts of the country due to economic interests it is fair hear them: the simplicity of the dialogue, the reflection of the thinker, the letter from the explorer. Everything is revealing.

Renata Roman is an independent Brazilian artist based in S‹o Paulo. Her artwork revolves around radio pieces, installations, sound poetry and field recordings. She keeps the sound map of the city of S‹o Paulo.

    2. Quaker Hall Hire by L$D Fundraiser. (Radio One 91 FM)

ÒÉ a raft of tapes of his musique concrete and sound collage opus, lurid cymbal work, slackened piano strings and reverb boxes and such atmosphere —- a bleak deathly grind – the Fundraiser’s sound is a dark psychedelic funeral. Ó – Matt Middleton

‘Quaker Hall Hire’ is a tape-based composition which was woven together for radia by Dunedin noise bricoleur L$D Fundraiser, from his extensive cache of found tapes of church recordings. A repeated sample from the answering machine tape from a Quaker hall, with its thrown-away, yet undeleted messages from people wanting to hire the venue, overlays borrowings from various found tapes from the discarded archives of Walter Ballantyne’s ‘N. Z Training Schools for Prophets and Intercessors’. A woozy, tape-quivered psychedelia runs through the piece’s emphasis on voice and mantric repetition, the cassette as found object being filtered through a decidedly outsider sampling process, by an artist with a predilection for splicing together careful, precise collages from the farthest reaches of audio material culture, his own sampled loops of guitar noise and other standard and invented instrumentation layering with the audio from VHS educational videos about raising children with handicaps. This material is then put through a process which equally balances the aleatory and the incisive, embracing both the aesthetics of the mistake and the humour of detourned juxtaposition, with digital files re-dialed through analogue history, time stretched and pulled by re-recording to 4 track off a cassette recorder for blind and handicapped persons with variable speed control. Searching the trash of mainstream political and cult-toned religious culture for clues, evidence of sickness, and strategies of subversion, sharing a language with Burroughs cut up tape-experiments, an aesthetic affinity with Stockhausen’s deconstruction of militarist nationalism (Hymnen) as filtered through the psychedelia of The Faust Tapes, and an interest in the grim side of the discarded excesses of capitalist culture in a way that implies decades-long familiarity with the Re:search Industrial Culture Handbook, while refracting such influences through local sensibilities, this is Dunedin dump-shop te at its finest.

#408. Onafhankelijke geluidskunst, radiofonische projecten en andere audio-non-visuele misverstanden en vondsten.

    1. Fresh Air by The Dublin Laptop Orchestra.

Fresh Air is a large-scale sound art piece curated and created by the Dublin Laptop Orchestra. The piece was written to address the sad truth that many common, household and automobile air-fresheners are heavily carcinogenic. The fact that people are willing to put their lives in danger in order to preserve nothing more than the aesthetic qualities of their world typifies the form over function attitude prevalent in our society and is something which we felt was important to deal with.

The work is in three sections, (1) Breathe In(side) by Brian Dillon, (2) Form by Gregory Jackson and (3) A Comparison of Worth by Bernhardt McKenna.

    2. Wind Walk Radio by Karl-Heinz Jeron for reboot.fm

Wind Walk Radio by Karl-Heinz Jeron for reboot.fm, Berlin

ÒI give guided tours through wind parks to discover the versatile and interesting sounds. Some residents living near wind parks complain regularly about the noise. The philosopher Kant let a raucous cock end as a soup ingredient. John Cage suggested an alternative: ÒIf noise is bothering you, listen to it. Ó

This project is taking John Cage literally.
In a wind park the first acoustic impression is only a buzz or a hum tone. Listening closer one can identify a surprising array of sounds and acoustic colours. Ó
There will be tours in 2014 near Berlin. More information is available at wind (at) jeron.org

    2. Taking cue from Gianmarco Del Re’s column on Fluid Radio, which profiles the most interesting sound artists and musicians currently operating within the Italian electroacoustic scene, musicians Giulio Aldinucci and Attilio Novellino have launched the Postcard from Italy project.
They invited the Aips collective artists to take parte in the project asking them to take field recordings in their own respective cities and areas, which were then redistributed amongst the group on an anonymous basis in order to be reworked and processed.
The resulting sounds ended up being a multifaceted sonic snapshot of the Italian peninsula, articulated into an album to be released this September, a live event that took place in London July21st, 2013 at Cafe OTO and an installation at SoundFjord.

This Radia Show was then produced by the original inspirator of the whole project, Gianmarco Del Re. He assembled fragments of the compositions included the Aips album, mixed them together with the original field recordings, excerpts from the installation sounds and recordings form the live shows of the Aips collective at Cafe OTO and Power Lunches.
The result is a 28minutes compendium of processed sketches from Italy.

#406. Onafhankelijke geluidskunst, radiofonische projecten en andere audio-non-visuele misverstanden en vondsten. Met Confusion, Reflection, Joy, a radio drama in Sonata Form (Soundart Radio) en Change de FA(r)CE by Mathilde Lacroix for Radio Campus Bruxelles.

    1. Confusion, Reflection, Joy, a radio drama in Sonata Form. (Soundart Radio).

Three movements, each exploring our location at Dartington Hall as somewhere where time slips between different years, decades, centuries. In August, when musicians gather for the Summer School, as you wander around the medley of medieval and modernist buildings different musics seep out of every door and window. The musicians and audiences bring and share memories of their visits here over the years, and make new ones.

Participants in the Summer School’s Radio Drama course, run by Soundart Radio, walked, listened and collected. Their studio was the whole of the Dartington Estate, their script was words found on gravestones amongst the ancient yew trees, and their scores were signs around the buildings. Many fragments were then pulled together into three movements. Confusion explores the problems of collective music making in a Covid wary environment. Reflection provides space to mourn and remember. Finally, Joy brings together old memories and new music with attempts at happiness.

Dartington Summer School began in 1948 and has only been cancelled once, in 2020. The planned events would have coincided with Beethoven’s 250th anniversary, and a new work, “Joy” was commissioned for choir and string quartet. In 2021, amongst sudden changes, partial closures and socially distanced outdoor music, Joy was rehearsed and performed for the first time. Snippets of Joy, by John Barber and Hazel Gould, pop up here, as well as many other half formed performances, captured whilst wandering around the site.
 Special thanks to Sara Mohr-Pietsch.

    2. Change de FA(r)CE by Mathilde Lacroix for Radio Campus Bruxelles.

Stop/Play. Change frequencies, change your mind !

Aids of tails ? What about playing this to change perceptions of the world ? What about record outside, transform it and ear it more confortable from inside, with a new perception ? My baby would be very happy.
This is the secret of authentic fermentation, guaranteed since several generations!
We also have an other secret : We have a lot to do. In French, we say :
« We have a lot of bread to cook ».

Last thing before to really Stop/Play :

    …………….« Listen…. »
Mathilde Lacroix is staying in Brussels. After learning translation and sound documentary, she’s studying electroacoustic music.
She’s exploring mental and physical soundscapes, alive or deserted, and try to open other perceptions to feel the world, and translate it with combinaison of poetical forms. She likes transformation, kneading and organical matter. She likes to decompose sounds, words, coincidences. Concret or abstract, with acoustic or virtual instruments, in the air or somewhere else, there is not permanent definition.
She collaborates with photograph Nathalie Hannecart and Aurélie Bay to explore three regards, three forms, three happy combinaisons (Les terribles ténébres). They also worked with engraver Weronika Siupka on the thematic of coal and steel industry. She also composed soundstrack of Miléna Trivier ‘s movie « Le Murmure des lieux qui nous habitent », and collaborates several times with Maxime Coton, exploring the place/space of poetry mixing different forms. Through project Living Pages, she meets of pinter Jamil Mehdaoui.
