A security guard at an Islamic center in San Diego is being hailed as a hero after stopping a mosque shooting, potentially preventing further harm. Authorities say the guard’s quick actions helped protect worshippers, as the incident raises fresh concerns about security at places of worship. 

A fast-moving wildfire known as the Sandy Fire is burning in Ventura County near Simi Valley, scorching more than 1,300 acres and forcing widespread evacuations. At least one home has been destroyed, and more than 17,000 residents were ordered to evacuate as crews battle the wind-driven blaze.
