In his first letter to the Christians in Corinth, Paul answered questions that the Corinthians had posed to him. In the second half of chapter 7, Paul advises his readers (due to the then turbulent times) to remain unmarried and describes other ways to become less bound up in earthly things. He specifies that this is advice because things were going to get worse, and he gives warnings that Christians will need to flee from Jerusalem due to the coming destruction of Jerusalem (70 AD). This alarming and turbulent time means that it is not a good time to make big changes in their lives.
For us today, we can apply his advice for times of upheaval in our own lives. His words also ring with truth about how we can sharpen our devotion to God, although these steps are not mandatory to live as a Christian.
