The Feast of the Archangels is a Christian celebration honored on September 29 in Western traditions (also known as Michaelmas) and November 8 in Eastern traditions. Archangels are high-ranking angels in Abrahamic religions who serve as chief messengers and leaders of heavenly hosts. The Main Archangels are Michael: The protector and leader of the heavenly armies who fights against evil; Gabriel: The primary messenger of God who announces major divine plans; Raphael: The healer and guide associated with restoration and protection; and Uriel: Often included as a fourth, known as the angel of light and wisdom. Western Christianity (Catholicism): Explicitly names and venerates Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael from canonical scripture. Eastern Tradition (Orthodox): Recognizes a total of seven principal archangels, including Uriel, Jegudiel, Selaphiel, and Barachiel. In the Gospel of Luke, the celebrated celestial being who tells the Virgin Mary of her Destiny is the Archangel Gabriel. He also announces the impending birth of John the Baptist to his father Zacharias. HJe50.

Humans throughout history have felt a need for supernatural support—for powers that help, guide, and either proclaim important events or bring news. Angels play those roles in Christianity, with most other cultures and religions offering equivalents.

What was it like to be a shepherd over 2000 years ago? Tending flocks, with agriculture, formed the basis of the Holy Land’s economy, and sheep raised on the hillsides around Bethlehem may well have been destined for temple sacrifices in Jerusalem, only six miles to the north. Let’s continue describing a shepherd's life.

Some of Israel's great heroes were shepherds: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and David. Both Psalm 23 and Jesus compare God's care to that of a Good Shepherd. But in the first century, it seems, shepherds, specifically, hireling shepherds, had a rather unsavory reputation. But what about the New Testament shepherds of Luke’s Christmas infancy narrative?

Christians believe Jesus has an historical context; he was born in history; he is neither a myth nor a legend. Jesus is both historical and verifiable according to Christians and most historians. They point out that he is mentioned not only in the New Testament, but by contemporaries and early documents. Christian scripture persistently places him within history as a man who walked the earth in real time, a man who permanently altered the history into which he was born.
