Whether you admire Dick Cheney or condemn him, one thing is undeniable: he changed the office of the vice presidency forever. No one before him, not Adams, not Johnson, not even the activist vice presidents of the 20th century, wielded so much authority or shaped so much policy from the second seat of power.

Peter speaks with Matthew Resatll about his newest book, The Nine Lives of Christopher Columbus. Restall takes us beyond polemic, sifting through the evidence across nations, languages, and five centuries to explore the many questions that make up what he calls "Columbiana." He demonstrates that, far from a uniquely talented individual, Columbus was typical of the Iberian and northern Italian men of his day - a merchant mariner who became an explorer, slave-trader, and conquistador-settler. And Restall challenges the notion, deeply held to this day, that Columbus can be credited or blamed for all that happened after 1492.

Some see the Vietnam War as a necessary intervention to protect global stability and prevent the spread of communism, while others view it as a tragic mistake, a quagmire that would cost countless lives and deeply divide the nation. Today, on this episode of History Shorts' new series, YOU DECIDE, we explore the Vietnam War from both perspectives, giving you the historical evidence, primary sources, and context to form your own judgment. We will examine whether the U.S. engagement was justified as a defense of freedom and global stability, or whether it was a miscalculated, destructive intervention.

The violent death of American Vice Consul Robert Whitney Imbrie in Tehran in July 1924 shocked both the United States and Persia (modern-day Iran). A mob attack in broad daylight, ostensibly sparked by religious fervor but quickly recognized as the product of deeper political currents, cut short the life of a seasoned American official and exposed the fragile state of Iranian politics in the early twentieth century.

The Holocaust produced not only vast tragedy but also extraordinary instances of moral courage, moments when individuals defied bureaucracy, prejudice, and even their own governments to save human lives. Among the most remarkable of these figures was Chiune Sugihara, a Japanese diplomat stationed in Lithuania during the early years of the Second World War. At great personal risk, Sugihara issued thousands of transit visas to Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution, enabling them to escape Europe through the Soviet Union and Japan.
