The passage of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act in 1973 marked a pivotal moment in the long and unfinished struggle for democracy in the nation's capital. When the Second World War came, Rickenbacker was already in his early sixties. He could've stayed home, basking in his fame and business success; he was running Eastern Air Lines at the time, but that wasn't his style. Instead, he volunteered as a civilian adviser and morale booster, visiting bases, inspecting planes, and giving pep talks to airmen heading into combat. And then, on one of these very missions, his B-17 crashed into the Pacific Ocean.

Peter speaks with Jeffrey Rosen, President and CEO of the National Constitution Center, as he discusses his upcoming book, The Pursuit of Liberty: How Hamilton vs. Jefferson Ignited the Lasting Battle Over Power in America. Through Hamilton's bold blueprint for a strong centralized government and Jefferson's fervent advocacy for decentralized agrarian ideals, Rosen reveals how their ideological battle not only shaped the Constitution's implementation but continues to fuel contemporary debates on federal authority, individual rights, and the soul of democracy.

YOU DECIDE SERIES: Napoleon's legacy is one of contradictions. To some, he is the ultimate military genius, a visionary who spread revolutionary principles, modernized governments, and rewrote the laws of Europe. To others, he is a tyrant whose ambition led to millions of deaths, widespread suffering, and the suppression of liberty in the very nations he claimed to liberate. Today, on this episode of History Shorts' new series, YOU DECIDE, we examine both perspectives, exploring the man, his wars, and the enduring debate: Was Napoleon a brilliant strategist and reformer, or a ruthless despot?

During World War I, the German submarine UB-65 gained a chilling reputation among sailors as a vessel cursed by death. For centuries, European cartographers filled the blank southern hemisphere with the imagined continent of Terra Australis Incognita, a vast land they believed balanced the Earth. Explorers from Magellan to Cook sought its mysterious shores, convinced it held wealth and wonder. The Hollywood Hays Code, enforced from the 1930s to the late 1960s, imposed strict moral guidelines on American films, banning depictions of crime, sexuality, and "immorality." Created to preserve public decency and counter Hollywood's scandalous reputation, it shaped the tone and content of countless movies for decades. While it stifled artistic freedom, it also forced filmmakers to use subtlety, symbolism, and wit to navigate censorship.
