When the Second World War came, Rickenbacker was already in his early sixties. He could've stayed home, basking in his fame and business success; he was running Eastern Air Lines at the time, but that wasn't his style. Instead, he volunteered as a civilian adviser and morale booster, visiting bases, inspecting planes, and giving pep talks to airmen heading into combat. And then, on one of these very missions, his B-17 crashed into the Pacific Ocean.
