Sure, we live in divisive times - I do not think anyone denies that. But I guess it could be worse. After all, back in the 1860s, chained dogs had to be brought onto the Senate floor to deter Senators from jumping at each other's throats. Crazy, right? But, perhaps warranted - just ask Senator Charles Sumner, who on May 22, 1856, was physically attacked on the Senate floor by Representative Preston Brooks of South Carolina in retaliation for a fiery anti-slavery speech Sumner had given days earlier - an attack that left him inches from death.

While it is in the news more than one would expect it to be these days, there might not be a palace on earth with a more ill-suited name than the largest island that is not a continent, namely, Greenland. And for that, we can thank the Vikings. Still, did you know that Greenland was actually under U.S. protection at one point in its history?

Most of us have learned about Brigham Young leading his followers, the Mormons, to establish their religious haven in Salt Lake Valley. But, I bet you many textbooks missed the little-known story of the Mormon Army of Nauvoo, also known as the Nauvoo Legion - a unique militia organized by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the mid-19th century before the events that usually make into the American textbooks.

Although the ancient Roman myth of Romulus and Remus is just that, a myth, it is still the foundational story that shapes the origins of the Roman Empire, and as many myths do, it has historical value. At the least, it tells us how the Romans viewed themselves and their world in the days of Rome's greatness.

The Kosovo Student Poisoning incident of 1990 is a mysterious and controversial event that took place during a tense period of ethnic and political unrest in Kosovo, then part of Yugoslavia. As the title suggests, the incident involved the sudden mass poisoning of thousands of ethnic Albanian students, primarily in secondary schools - yet did it happen? Well, that depends on who you ask.
