The only way to take Jesus and his Sermon on the Mount seriously is to remind ourselves of St Paul's letter to the Corinthians. We are God's temple, God dwells in each of us. Our temple is tarnished when we place the world's foolishness before the invitation from Jesus to go deeper in action.
Jesus teaches proper understanding of the law. Asking his followers to go beyond just mere observance of the law, rather having greater faithfulness to the spirit of the law. Right relationships is what fulfills the law.
"Our readings this week celebrate the "Great Light" God provides for those dwelling in darkness, and that Light is Jesus the Christ. We celebrate as well the loving call to discipleship that Jesus gave the early Apostles, and the call we all have received through our baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus. The joy of discipleship leads us to loving service of others, beginning with the least and the last."
