December 14, 2023 Who’s Way Is Greatest?
Many people think of prayer as a way to get God to do what the prayer
thinks He should do. Yet, as Jesus prays, He seems to take an entirely
different approach. Instead of starting with all kinds of requests about
the circumstances of life, Jesus begins by declaring that He wants
God’s way to unfold. He teaches us to see prayer as a way to align our
hearts with our Lord’s heart. We learn that citizens of the kingdom want
their King to be in charge – meaning that they themselves are not. All
of this together means that prayer is something quite different than
delivering our ‘wish lists’ to God. Instead, it is a connection where
God’s way becomes our wish. And we recognize our dependence on Him as
provider and protector.

December 14, 2023 Trust His Heart
Praying is one of the most basic parts of being a Christian. When you’re
first a believer, you might feel like you don’t know how to pray
‘correctly’. While prayer is actually not that complicated, it had
gotten very twisted up in Jesus’ time. So Jesus takes the opportunity
while speaking to a crowd on a hillside, and teaches them how to pray.
Some people today may be surprised to learn that the introduction to
this prayer seems to strongly recommend against saying this (or any
prayer) over and over again. But we can learn so much from what Jesus
says in His teaching. So we’ll be taking the next three weeks to sort
through and learn all that we can from the “Lord’s Prayer.”

December 14, 2023 Who Knows?
There’s a saying that cryptically asks “if a tree falls in the forest,
and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?” That question has
been used in many different debates, but we’re going to look at one way
it can be applied. People like for others to see when they perform
well. It feels good to be noticed, and it feels like it actually makes
more of a difference when our good deeds or achievements are recognized.
But there’s a dark side to that tendency; it’s called self focus. We
start to move from doing what is right simply because it is right, and
instead, we begin to want an audience so that we get credit. Jesus
addresses this tendency in the Sermon on the Mount and recommends some
pretty surprising approaches to doing what is right. Can we take to
heart what He teaches?

For our last Sunday of the year, we have a special treat: we get to have
Lauren Pupchik come and share with us about her ministry in Guatemala,
and to introduce us to an opportunity that we have to send some Hopers
to work with her for a week in the new year. You don’t want to miss
Lauren – she is always such an incredible blessing to us, and her heart
for Jesus shines through so clearly. Then we’ll take a look at Paul’s
story in Acts 26 and let the Holy Spirit remind us what naturally should
happen when we meet Jesus!

When someone damages you in any significant way, it not only
causes you suffering, it also can make you feel powerless. The natural
anger or sadness that comes from loss joins together with a desire to
regain control of your life. So often, we think through ways to get
revenge. It may not bring back what we’ve lost, but it will definitely
give us the sense that we’re back on top. Jesus, our King, has a
different approach. He starts by talking about the law and how it
requires justice. But then Jesus says that we are to forgo payback.
Instead, He asks us to do the unthinkable. How can we live out what
Jesus says? Let’s take the morning and explore this together.

Who would like to be the perfect mom? Or dad? We long to measure
up to the highest standard in roles that matter to us. So whether we are
trying to be the perfect student, teammate, employee, or citizen, we
can all understand the desire to eliminate mistakes and do everything
right. But the nature of being human is that we all mess up – no one
escapes this reality! So we come to the end of the first chapter of the
Sermon on the Mount, and Jesus makes a statement that simultaneously
challenges us and makes us feel defeated. What is Jesus trying to get
across and what does the rest of the story teach us about this
statement? Let’s look at how Jesus summarizes His declaration that He
has come to fulfill the law.

December 13, 2023 Living up to your word
some people can’t be believed. Maybe you have someone like this
in your life: they have made promises or told stories that later turned
out to be empty words or inflated truths. It is a struggle to be
connected to someone you can’t believe in any kind of deep relationship.
You’re always guessing what is actually true and what is just said for
effect. Jesus talks about how our words should carry truth. Whether we
are talking about a vow made in marriage, or just a promise made to
someone else, people should absolutely be able to trust our words.
Without this character trait, how are we supposed to represent the King?
How are we supposed to share the hope we have in Jesus? Yet, too often,
we don’t stop to consider how reliable our words are. So let’s take a
look at what Jesus has to teach us on this topic.

We’re going to set aside this morning from our study in the
Sermon on the Mount to talk together as a church family. We want to sync
up on who we are and where we’re headed. In order for us to function
well as a body, we all need to understand what God has called us to and
how we approach the work He’s given us. So today, we’ll dig into some of
the keys to our ministry and put our hearts and minds together. What if
our church was led and empowered by the Holy Spirit? What if we
absolutely let Him be in charge and be the energy behind all that we do?
We believe that this is the Lord’s invitation to us and we’re going to
talk about how we can turn towards this by looking at a few Scriptures
and by having an open conversation about what’s coming.

Some of us have taken this path and faced the devastation that follows.
Others of us watch depictions of this storyline with fascination. It is
incredible that something that causes so much pain to so many is the
subject of story after story in our entertainment. Jesus takes on this
topic with some startling words. In fact, these words are so shocking
that most people don’t actually follow them. But what is His point? How
can we take to heart what He says without watering it down? And
ultimately, our goal is to learn from Him about how we ought to live and
what we should want. So let’s take this morning and dive into this
topic that is as important today as it ever has been.

But I know I’m right! How often do we dig in for a fight when the
alternative is to give in to someone else, even though I’m right? In
today’s culture, we are told to stand up for our rights and those who do
this are celebrated and honored. So why would we ever surrender our
rights? Jesus talks about this topic by using a very specific example
which is probably hard to understand in our society today. But it has
deep meaning for those who follow Him and invites us to follow Him into
setting aside what we have the right to, in order to live like He did.
