  • How RUNNING Helped My Depression (Mark West)

My guest this week, Mark West says he believes that  we “all have a runner in us”. Mark is a long distance runner and mental health advocate who is using his platform to not only encourage everyone to adapt a running routine into their life but do so to improve their mental health.

Today we learn about a tragic accident that sparked Mark’s passion for running and how fitness was later used to help him when he started struggling with depression and anxiety.

We talk about the metaphor that running represents in mental health, allowing us to literally (and figuratively) put “one foot in front of the other” and view the “hills” in our lives as opportunities for growth. We also talk about what it has been like to be a high achieving male and be so vocal about his mental health when the stigma around men and mental illness is very real.

Mark also shares a POWERFUL insight on why walking and running might be a better option to talk to people who are struggling than “going for a coffee”. He shares about how this journey has opened his eyes to the importance of empathy and the need for us to discover “what works for us”.

This was such a profound episode with many insights about mental health and opens the conversation about the variety of ways that we can find healing. However we want to hear from YOU! Do you use running or fitness as a way to cope with your mental health struggles? Find us on Facebook (Hope to Recharge) and let us know! Because as always...together is BETTER!

  • Amping Up Gratitude (Attitude of Gratitude)

Why am I talking about gratitude? Why is my tone so upbeat? When there is so much uncertainty in the world, when so many people are afraid, I truly believe this is when gratitude is most important and key to shifting our mindset during all the uncertainty.

This doesn’t mean that the pain doesn’t exist. However when we tap into our gratitude (and there is always something to be grateful for!) it gives us a moment to disconnect from fear. Gratitude is like a blanket of comfort during the darkest of times.

Sometimes the outside world is our security. When it seems to be crumbling down, gratitude is what shifts us from a state of stress to a place of calm. Today I walk you through the good we have in our lives right now and how we can (and should) be increasing our gratitude practice.

I also wanted to share with you a story about a woman I met at Walmart and how important it is for us to show kindness and gratitude to those around us. I want to challenge you to be a light when the world seems to be in darkness. Now more than ever we need to be that light.

We would love to hear from you! Find us in our private Facebook group, Hope to Recharge, and let us know what you are grateful for during this time. As always, together is better!

  • How to Hack Your Thoughts and Improve Your Mood (Elisheva Liss)

Today we are digging into how we can better understand our emotions, improve our mood, and gain control of our thoughts! We have the perfect person to guide us in this conversation, my friend and incredibly accomplished therapist, Elisheva Liss.

Elishiva shares with us about why she was originally drawn to the mental health field and what she has found in her years of research and countless hours spent counseling individuals and couples. She breaks down for us the process of narrative therapy and how we can rewire the way we think and view our ever changing emotions.

She shares with us about the “triangle of relationships”, why we should never “gloss over” our emotions, and why there are times that we do NOT need to have “positive” thoughts (instead opt in for “healthy” ones). She also shares with us a few techniques that we can start using today (like the “but” technique!) that will help us to better frame our thoughts and ultimately improve our mood.

We end the conversation with a powerful dialogue about relationships and how we can use this information to deepen our connection with not only ourselves but with those we love. I know you are going to learn so much from this conversation with Elishiva. Please connect with us in our private Facebook group, Hope to Recharge, and let us know what you learned! As always, together is better!

  • GRATITUDE During the Coronavirus Crisis (Attitude of Gratitude)

In the midst of the coronavirus crisis, I wanted to come to you today and talk about the role of gratitude during this stressful time. Like you, I am balancing work, children, being home, and navigating my own mental health while the world is in a panic. I wanted to share with you how gratitude is helping me get through this difficult time.

Gratitude shifts our energy. Not only individually but it also has an impact on our energy collectively. Even if you just take thirty seconds today to feel gratitude you will make an impact in our collective energy (which we desperately need!). Fear is more dangerous right now than any virus. Now more than ever it is important for us to take care of each other and our own mental health.

I also wanted to remind you that anything can change instantly. We have seen how quickly things have shifted to tragedy. In the same sense, I want to present the idea that things can change for the good very quickly as well. We need to remember how lucky we are and how beautiful life was before. Take a look back and embrace how much we had to be grateful for.

We are living in the best time of technology. Let’s use it to our advantage! Get online therapy, connect with an old friend, and find us on Facebook! We have an incredible community which you can easily find by typing in “Hope to Recharge” in your search bar. As always, together is better!

  • Balancing Life and Mental Health (Jennifer Reed)

If you are trying to balance being a mom, a wife, working, and trying to have somewhat of a social life, it can be overwhelming. It may even be tempting to look at someone else’s life and wonder how they are balancing it all so well.

Today I had the honor of connecting with the host of the Mom to Wife Plus Life podcast, Jennifer Reed, to hear about her journey of “balancing it all’ while navigating the ups and downs of her and her husband's mental health.

Jennifer generously shares with us her story of coming out of a domestic violent marriage, struggling with “mom guilt”, navigating her husband’s PTSD, and also feeling pressure to have everything figured out. She wants to encourage other moms and wives that sometimes “life is hard” and that’s okay!

In this episode we talk about why we don’t have to always “fix” what’s broken, learning how to disconnect and be present, the importance of self-care, and why you SHOULD be talking to yourself!

We hope this episode encourages you that you do not have to have it all figured out and that we are all in this together. Please connect with us in our private Facebook group, Hope to Recharge, and let us know your thoughts. As always, together is better!

  • Anxiety and the Coronavirus (Bonus Episode)

Today we are coming to you with a bonus episode to address the anxiety you may be feeling over the Coronavirus.  We are going through a difficult time globally, however we are also connecting in a beautiful way. There is so much support in the world and that is bringing us together.

Although we are not as scared of the virus, many of us are terrified of the implications of the global fear. I want to share with you in this episode not only a new perspective on how to view this crisis but also the implications it may have on our mental health.

There are many things that we can do to be productive during this time. There is so much that we can access here and now instead of consuming ourselves with the unknown. We live a life that is so fast. We are having an opportunity now to stop and pause to not only be with our families and learn something new, but also be able to tune in and grow inwardly.

At times of crisis we have an opportunity to draw in closer and grow together. We need to use this opportunity to tune in, be with our families, and be a role model of what it looks like to come out of the other side of a crisis shining.

We would love to connect with you! We want to support you during this time. Find us in our private Facebook group, Hope to Recharge. Because as always, together is better!

  • The RIPPLE Effect of Kindness (Attitude of Gratitude)

In today’s episode of Attitude of Gratitude I want to share a story with you about an incredible act of kindness that I received last week and the ripple effect that it had not only on my life but in the lives of others.

I truly believe that random acts of kindness can become extraordinary moments in our lives with powerful lessons within them.  I am starting to feel like one of the luckiest people in the world due to the mentors in my life, and that includes a recent stranger that I met named Kelly, who provided a powerful lesson for me on kindness and gratitude

I want to inspire you to go a little further in your gratitude and trace back how kindness has affected many moments along the way and pay it forward. Remember how you felt when you received kindness and pay it forward to someone else. There is so much to be grateful for!

We hope this encourages you on your mental health journey! Find us on Facebook at Hope to Recharge! We have an amazing tribe of people who would love to be a support to you. As always, together is better!

  • How FOOD Affects Your Mental Health with Dr. Selena Bartlett

Can what we eat have a drastic effect on our mental health? Is it possible to heal our brains and be able to rewire years of conditioning through things like changing our diet? We are bringing a favorite on the show Dr. Selena Barlett, back for her third appearance to discuss the implications our diet has on our mental health.

Dr. Barlett is a neuroscientist, with a background as a pharmacist and has an intimate story about how she and her family were deeply affected by mental illness. Make sure you check out episode seven and episode seventeen where we dig into Selena’s story as well as a deep dive into the topic of neuroplasticity.

In today’s episode we address how food, specifically sugar, not only affects our mood but also has addictive components comparable to alcohol and drugs. Selena shares with us again about rethinking how we view “mental health” and understanding how “brain health” or “brain fitness”  is really what we are after.

Selena teaches us about the link between stress and food consumption and how we are self medicating through sugar and how we can actively retrain our brains to handle stress in a healthier way. As she advises, stress will not “go away” so we have to learn how to handle it in a different way.

We want to encourage you that none of us were trained on how to properly take care of our brains, and our culture reinforced addictive eating behaviors. However, there IS hope! Selena says that she believes neuroplacility is our “greatest hope” and that it is never too late to develop new habits and rewire our brains, which will help us not only to cope with things like depression and anxiety, but possibly even eliminate it.

We would love to be your support in your mental health journey! Please connect with us in our private Facebook group, Hope to Recharge, because as always, together is better!

  • Practicing Gratitude (Attitude of Gratitude)

As Brene Brown says, “There is never joy without gratitude, they are both connected!” I have been experiencing that a lot lately. So I decided on today’s episode of Attitude of Gratitude, not to teach about gratitude like we normally do, but instead PRACTICE gratitude with you, the listener. Are you ready?

Whether it was taking the time to listen every week, leave a review, write a comment, or give me a suggestion on how to make this show better. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you. I wanted to spend a moment and share with you what your support means to me.

Thank you for trusting in my voice, my thoughts, my journey, and allowing me to share in my experiences so that I can help others. We are all in this together, I cannot do it alone.

I also am going to share a challenge with you for the next week where you too can practice gratitude and pay it forward. The more kindness and gratitude we can spread in this world the better it will be. Find us over on Facebook, Hope to Recharge, and share with us what you are grateful for this week. As always, together is better.

  • Breaking the Silence of Domestic Violence with Angeline Mitchell

Do you ever feel trapped? Like there is no way out of the difficult situation you are in? This week we are talking about the power of choice, the importance of understanding our self worth, and getting out of toxic and even abusive relationships.

In today’s episode I had the honor of connecting with Angeline Mitchell who is on a mission to help men and women become unstuck and break the silence around abusive relationships. She is also a coach and the host of Let's Break the Silence and Take Your Life Back Podcast and she uses these platforms to help her audience “unleash their personal power.”

Angeline shares with us her story of healing from a relationship of domestic violence and the critical moment in her life where she “drew a line in the sand” and decided that she deserved more in her life. She believes that building confidence was key in her journey and we discuss how we can build confidence through practices like gratitude, affirmations, and surrounding yourself with the right mentors.

We hope this episode encourages you that even if you feel stuck you are not. As Angeline shares, “We all have choices.” If you feel alone or need extra encouragement please connect with us in our private Facebook Community, Hope to Recharge. Together is ALWAYS better!
