  • Experiencing Gratitude After Challenges (Attitude of Gratitude)

Last week was an incredibly difficult week. My youngest child was very sick and there were several things going on in my personal life that made the week very challenging. Several times it felt as though I was at a breaking point, so I used gratitude to recharge and help ease me through anxiety and sleep deprivation.

But that's not what this episode is about…

I wanted to share with you an exercise that I did right after the week was over, my son was back at school, and things had calmed down. I carved out time to intentionally sit down and reflect on the week and find sixty things that I was grateful for in the MIDST of the struggle.

Going through this exercise was so impactful that someone else even noticed that my energy was higher and that I was in a state of peace. Why should we stop and reflect on hard times and find gratitude afterwards? In this episode of attitude of gratitude, we dig in deep to the benefits of this practice and give tips on how you can implement this into your day.

What about you!? We would love to hear your thoughts about this practice or if you have any tips of your own concerning gratitude. We are all learning and growing together! You can easily access our community by finding our private Facebook group, “Hope to Recharge” because as always, together is better!

  • Happiness’ Role in Mental Health with Dr. Tal Ben Shahar

What is happiness? Is it something that we earn? Something that is dependent on outside circumstances? Is it something that we can experience even in the midst of mental health struggles? This week I had the incredible honor of connecting with someone that I have looked up to for a long time,  the co-founder of Happiness Studies Academy, author, and Harvard lecturer Dr. Tal Ben Shahar.

Dr. Tal shares with us about what research has found out about happiness and what we can do to add more of it into our lives. He shares with us the importance of healthy relationships and how the quality of these connections matter more to our happiness than outward success and achievement. He shares that the happiest countries in the world have been found to place more emphasis on relationships and how we can use this information to draw closer to the people in our lives.

He also shares with us his own story of struggling with unhappiness and how his deep inward journey led him into his life’s work. Dr. Tal has concluded that happiness is not a destination, rather it is a journey that we are all on and states that we can live in it no matter what our circumstances are. He also lets us in on what the five elements of happiness are and why goals are simply the “means to the end”.

We also talk about happiness through the lens of mental health struggles and Dr. Tal gives a compelling case of why some level of ‘crisis” is needed for “significant growth”. He shares with us the difference between sadness and depression and why the first step to happiness is “embracing unhappiness”.  Dr. Tal also gives a few practices that we can implement daily to increase our happiness.

I learned so much in this interview and I am so excited to get to share it with you. What do you think about the topic of happiness? What stood out to you about the research that Dr. Shahar shared? We would love to hear from you! Find us in our private Facebook group Hope to Recharge because as always- together is better!

  • Gratitude In the Midst of Disappointment (Attitude of Gratitude)

Today we are going to talk about being grateful in the midst of disappointment. In the past, when I was expecting something, or excited about an upcoming event, I would be extremely disappointed if it didn’t work out. It would actually affect my mood to a point where I would get into a very negative place.

After practicing mindfulness, I slowly started to rewire my mind that when I now experience disappointment I can actually experience GRATITUDE in the midst of it. Why? Because I have seen that often when something doesn’t happen the way that I expected, it is actually a blessing in disguise.

Even if I cannot see it in the moment, I know that there is something bigger at play that is making things move in my favor. I have had to learn how to trust God and know that all things are working out in my favor.

Again as we have talked about before when discussing gratitude, this is a muscle that we have to build and develop. Experiencing disappointment is hard. However often there is nothing we can do, so we have to ask ourselves how we can bring positivity into the situation.

What about you? How do you handle disappointment? What from this episode will you start to practice and implement into your life? Let us know! We have a thriving Facebook community we would love to invite you to. Search for us at Hope to Recharge. As always, together is better!

  • Holistic Approach to Our Emotions with Zahraa Surtee

Are there “good” emotions and “bad” emotions? Should we push away feelings of sadness or anger and seek to immediately replace them with more “acceptable” ways to feel? How about our mental health? Should we admit when we are struggling or hold back our struggles in order to not burden those around us?

This week we are talking with the incredible Zahraa Surtee who is a mental health therapist committed to educating others about emotions and breaking the stigma around mental health..

Growing up in a traditional Indian culture, Zaharra shares with us that it was unacceptable to share your emotions and admit that you were struggling. As a child this left her confused about how to find the support that she desperately needed. As someone who was in tune to her emotions, not having the “language” to express what was going on internally was incredibly difficult especially after enduring a tragic loss in her family.

When she grew up,  Zahraa discovered a deep love for psychology and eagerly pursued a career in therapy. This gave her the platform to speak on the cultural implications of mental health and the importance for us to acknowledge how we truly feel.

In this powerful conversation, we also talk about the importance of acknowledging the uniqueness of everyone’s journey and why admitting how we feel is truly a strength. We also dig into our role as parents and how important it is to be “conscious” throughout our parenting journey. We discuss how we can intentionally provide a space for our children to feel seen and heard.

What about you? What are your thoughts around our emotions? Do you feel guilty feeling certain ways? How can we hold a space for others who are struggling? Continue the conversation by heading to our private Facebook Group: Hope to Recharge….because as always, together is better!

  • Choosing Higher Vibrations (Attitude of Gratitude)

Today I wanted to share something with you that I have noticed about myself. In the past, I used to ask my extremely positive husband and father to “tone it down” with their positivity. I would question why they were so happy and why they intentionally chose joy everyday.  I did not understand how anyone could live in such a high vibration simply by being alive.

I later realized that by questioning their joy I was actually interfering with it. I wanted to bring them down to my level of comfort. I didn’t realize that my low energy wasn’t able to handle their happiness. As I have worked on my own gratitude and my own energy has shifted, people now ask me the same questions I use to ask them. “How can you be so happy? How can you find so much joy?”

It is difficult to walk through life and maintain joy unless you are intentional with it. There is a lot of negative energy in the world. We have the power however to amplify joy and positive energy through practices like gratitude and developing the habit of seeing the good. It’s not always easy, but now after experiencing its power I am more passionate than ever and want to share these practices with you.

Gratitude is a choice that we make. We want to support you as you make these choices yourself and walk in a lifestyle of gratitude. Find us in our private  Facebook Community: Hope to Recharge...because as always, together is better!

  • Finding Support In Your Mental Health Journey (Solo: Part 3)

What do you do when you are struggling with your mental health and you are not feeling supported by your family and friends the way you wish? This is a question that I am often asked and is a common concern in the mental health community. This is our last episode in our solo series where I am diving into my own story of healing which included, finding the right support.

I want to honestly share with you a perspective that you may have not considered when it comes to your loved ones. Sometimes it is difficult for those that are the closest to you to fully understand what you are going through. It can even be stressful because they may not have the language to support you the way they wish they could and they also might feel overwhelmed because they are carrying the weight of your struggles.

Although this may seem like an impossible situation with no clear solution, there is a practical approach that you can take that will not only help you find the support you need but also be a relief to the ones you love. Tune in today to hear how I found support outside of my friends and family and why I recommend that you do the same.

Speaking of support, we would LOVE to be a part of your community. Find us on Facebook, Hope to Recharge where we will lock arms with you and be a support when you need it the most. Because as always, together is better!

  • Making Miracles: A Book Review (Attitude of Gratitude)

On today’s episode of Attitude of Gratitude I wanted to follow up on the book that I have been reading, Making Miracles in 40 Days. I mentioned that I was starting this book back in episode six (listen here) and that I would be returning to share with you what I learned.

I am almost done with the forty days and to be completely honest I had a difficult time for a while going through the practices. There is a heavy emphasis on feeling (and being grateful for) the negative experiences that we have.

Although this is a great practice I did not feel right placing too much attention on the negative emotions that some of the practices encourage you to do.  I eventually had to stop these practices because they were not surviving me. I was however able to adjust it and enjoyed what I learned moving forward.

I wanted to share this with you because it is important for us to pay close attention to what works for us and what doesn’t. Just because something is in a book or a teaching, and may work for others does not mean that it will work for you. And that is okay! What is important is that you are turning inward and making decisions based on what feels right to you.

All in all I think this is a great book especially for those who are beginning their gratitude journey. I would love to hear YOUR thoughts about this book or what I shared with you today. You can connect with us in our private Facebook group, Hope to Recharge, because as always, together is better!

  • How to “Squish” Mental Health Stigma with John Lang and Max Fritzhand

Do you feel truly supported in your mental health journey? Do you wish that there were more people for you to talk to and lean on when you are going through a difficult time? This week, I am excited to share with you about a company called Squish, which is looking to solve this problem and bring hope to the mental health field.

In this episode, I sit down with John Lang and Max Fritzhand, founders of the amazing APP where they are seeking to “squish” the stigma around mental health by bringing together those who struggle and creating a supportive environment where people feel safe to share about their journey.

You will hear the interesting backstories of both of these young men, how they met, and what they are hoping to create in their business. We also discuss the implications technology has on our mental health, the surprising stats they have uncovered in their research, and how we can use this information to play a more active role in our own mental wellness.

We hope this episode encourages you to find the community support that you need. We cannot do this alone. If you are looking for a tribe to walk with you during this time please connect with us in our private Facebook group: Hope to Recharge. Because as always, together is better.

  • Gratitude During Tragedy: The Loss of Kobe (Attitude of Gratitude)

We lost a giant this week. The loss of Kobe Bryant, his daughter, and the other passengers was a trauma that we collectively experienced. Many of us did not know him personally, however we felt as though we did because of the impact that he made on our lives.

My son asked me an important question. I was in the middle of my “Smile for the Day” and he asked, “How can we smile during such a tragedy?” I am incredibly grateful he brought this  question up because it is one we must ask ourselves. How can we find light in the midst of dark times? How do we hold space for loss while still continuing our life with gratitude?

Life moves so fast. We are not guaranteed another day. That is why it is so important to live a life of intention and walk in gratitude for the moment. Let’s show up with gratitude in honor of Kobe. Let us continue in our missions, because I truly believe that is what he would have wanted. Every moment is a gift, let us be grateful for that gift.

We would love to hear from you! How did you process through the events this week? What role can gratitude play in pain and tragedy? Connect with us in our private Facebook group: Hope to Recharge, because as always...together is better!

  • Nature’s Role in Mental Health with Celina Celeste

Sometimes we just need a break. We need to step away, perhaps even go outside, and give ourselves permission to simply BE. This week I had the honor of connecting with a young woman who has learned through her own mental health journey about how powerful a break truly can be.

Celina Celeste is no ordinary young person. After walking through her own depression she decided to take her mental health into her own hands by stepping outside of the box of what most people her age are doing and begin an inward journey of healing and self discovery. After walking through two major social media breaks and making outdoors and travel a priority, Celina shares with us the positive impact these experiences had on her mental health.

In this episode, we talk about the things we can do now to be more proactive in our mental wellness and how we can experience peace by incorporating certain habits into our lives. We discuss how we can become the biggest allies to our own recovery, how we can uncover tools of healing within us, and how we can change even when our environment stays the same.

This is an incredible episode that will help you rethink the process of healing and equip you to begin the journey today. If you need any additional support in your mental health journey please connect with us in our private Facebook group: Hope to Recharge. We have a community waiting there to support you and elevate you to the next level. Because as we always say, together is better!
