In Episode Seven we connected with neuroscientist Selena Bartlett and heard about the sister that she lost to mental illness and how that shifted Selena’s career to studying “brain health” and neuroplasticity. Today, we dig in even deeper to hear about Selena’s own experience with depression and the way she was able to overcome it by “retraining” her brain.
Selena knows with conviction both through her work and through her personal experience that we CAN rewire our brains. She says that the process she shares with us is “simple” but not “easy”. Selena gives practical tactics to help make our brains more resilient to pain and remain peaceful in the midst of chaos.
In this episode, you will learn the role mirror neurons play in our depression, why the amygdala is wired to “protect us”, how we can train our brain to be “calm”, and how to use unconditional love as a tool to soothe loved ones through mental illness. She even asks me about the “moment of change” in my own journey and we discuss how using small moments can change the wiring of our brain.
Towards the end of the interview, we also dig into nutrition's role in mental health, why sugar should be avoided and how the brain negatively responds to it, and why Selena believes that exercise is the “elixir of life”. This interview is not only inspirational but incredibly informative. Please connect with us in our private Facebook group and let us know what you learned!

It is no secret that I love the subject of gratitude. However, after recently going through a meditation led by our guest this week, David Scheiner, I realized that there was another level that I wanted to take my meditation and gratitude practice.
David is a chiropractor who not only helps align others physically but also mentally and spiritually. From a young age, he says that he has always been fascinated by the spiritual and able to maintain a state of “calm”. He now helps others tune in and find inner peace despite the stressors that life may throw their way.
In today’s episode, David shares with us why he believes that there is a “still” pond inside all of us and how we can become the “silent observer” to the stressors in our lives. He also talks about how meditation equips us with the “space of freedom” to fully accept others and those around us and find the “gift” in suffering.
David also leads us through a POWERFUL meditation that left me almost speechless at the end. If you struggle with overwhelming anxiety or wonder hope you can find hope in seemingly hopeless situations, this episode is FOR you! Let us know what you think by connecting with us on our Facebook group, because as always, together is better.

I am excited to introduce you to consultant, project manager, runner, and listener of the show, Andreas Zapletal whom I recently got to know through a mutual networking group that we are in. I am so grateful that Andreas reached out after listening to the show and generously shared his own mental health story with me. After hearing it, I knew I wanted to introduce him to you because his story is one many of us can relate to.
Andreas says that he has dealt with forms of depression since childhood but it wasn’t until he endured the loss of a close friend that he really took a long look at his physical and mental health and knew that there needed to be massive changes. He then began the journey to get into physical shape and through that discovered that running also had a positive influence on his depressive symptoms.
In this powerful conversation, Andreas shares with us about how through this process he learned that he was putting too much of his self-worth in his work and the importance of living with strong values and making your health and family as a priority. We also talk about the moment he had to have a difficult conversation with his daughter about his friends suicide and how that was a wake-up call for him personally to pursue health.
Andreas also encourages us to reach out to someone if we are struggling. If you need someone to talk to please do not hesitate to reach out to our Facebook community. Remember, together is better.

Can you find gratitude in the midst of grief?
This week, on my birthday, my first cousin Avigail lost her battle to cancer, leaving behind a husband and five children. She was a brilliant woman and we will miss her terribly. Through this loss, I learned an important lesson that I want to share with you in today’s episode.
After her passing, I began to reflect on my life and the importance of being grateful for each day. We are not guaranteed tomorrow and I realized that I needed to be grateful for every day of my life. Although my birthday was a difficult day to celebrate, I did a small practice that was very powerful and want to challenge you to join me.
I took my 43rd birthday as an opportunity to make a list of 43 memories that I am grateful for. Each year of my life I reflected on and was overwhelmed with gratitude. This practice was incredibly eye-opening for me because I started to remember the precious memories that I had forgotten.
Today I invite you to join me. Even through grief and sadness there is always hope. Join our private Facebook community and let us know about your own list, and the memories you are grateful for. Because as always, together is better.

This week we are sharing the POWERFUL story of Zahava List, the co-founder of Chazkeinu an organization that provides peer support and resources for Jewish women struggling with mental illness. Zahava’s passion for mental wellness began from her own story which she graciously shares with us today.
After delivering her first child, a baby boy, Zahava started experiencing manic episodes along with dark depression. She later was diagnosed with Bipolar 1 and began her journey of recovery along with mothering three more children. She shares with us what it was like to be a new mother and struggle with this illness and how she navigated the ups and downs of these major life changes all at once.
In this episode, we not only hear her powerful story, but learn more about bipolar, why breaking stigma is so important, and why we need to lean into a community and not suffer alone. We also find out how she used her struggles to find the courage not only for herself but for the countless amount of women that her organization reaches. Zahava provides so much hope to those who are struggling and we hope this episode encourages you that no matter what you may be suffering from, there is always hope.

Do you struggle receiving thanks? Or compliments? If someone expresses gratitude to you, do you shake it off or struggle with knowing what to say? This week on Attitude with Gratitude, we are discussing how to receive gratitude and why it is so important to do so.
For my entire life, I have struggled with receiving gratitude from others. I believe this comes from wanting to be humble, or perhaps an insecurity, but I know it isn’t a healthy habit. I notice that when I thank others they receive it graciously which makes me feel good as the one who says “thank you”. So why do I have a hard time receiving it myself?
I recently did a little research on this topic and in this episode share with you what I find. I want to be open with my own journey to hopefully help you learn how to receive gratitude yourself. I love the topic of gratitude and reflecting on it every week. It challenges me in my own journey and my own habits and I hope it does for you as well.
This week I invite you to reflect on how you receive gratitude and how you respond to others. If you have any thoughts or tips please join our private Facebook community and share with us your experience. Remember together is better!
