Imagine teaching for 37 years, traveling all over the world, and having taught over 2.5 million people, and then one day...being told that you would never speak or write again.
That’s exactly what happened to this week's guest Paul Cummings, whom I had the extreme honor of sitting down with to discusses how he beat all odds and gained a new perspective on gratitude.
I first heard about Paul when our mutual friend, Andy Heck introduced me to his book, It All Matters, and I heard about his powerful story and optimistic outlook on life. Today, Paul shares with us about when he had a stroke and was then diagnosed with advanced Aphasia, which is loss of ability to express speech (or understand it) caused by brain damage.
In our interview Paul shares with us why he believes that those who are diagnosed with Aphasia are some of the “bravest people you will ever meet”, why he wakes up every morning at 4 AM and practices his speech for four hours, how his mother has shaped his outlook on life, and why he is “not a prisoner” to anything.
I was so inspired by Paul and his story and know that you will love this incredibly raw and powerful conversation. We would love to hear your thoughts on this topic! You can connect with us in our private Facebook group- because as always- together is better!

This week, I have the honor of introducing you to someone who has been instrumental in my recovery process and healing journey, my very own psychiatrist, Dr. Samuel Pauker.
Although he is a psychiatrist, and your mind may immediately jump to treatment by medication alone, Dr. Pauker’s work goes way beyond psychopharmacology and integrates full health by acknowledging the link between body, mind, and soul.
After asking someone for a recommendation for the very BEST psychiatrist, I was given Dr. Pauker’s name and just after our first intake session, I knew this was the right doctor for me. Dr. Pauker uses a unique blend of psychopharmacology along with psychoanalysis to customize treatment for each individual. His work allows patients to feel seen and heard and he digs into why that is so important with us today.
In this episode, we discuss how to balance medication and self-care practices, why using medication can stabilize us enough to engage in life-changing activities, how depression and anxiety are linked, and why sometimes anxiety is a defense against depression. This was a powerful interview and I know you will learn so much from Dr. Pauker! We would love to hear your major takeaways from the episode. This week, I had the honor of sitting down with an Australian doctor who is shaking things up in her industry by talking publicly about the mental health and wellbeing of doctors.
Dana shares with us about her first year working as a doctor and how she was surprised by the extreme overwhelm and lack of support that she experienced. She was right out of medical school and when she sought help, it was suggested to her that she seek counseling privately (off record) in fear that she might lose her job.
The more she dug into the topic, the more she learned that there was an underlying problem in the medical community that had to be addressed. There were many junior and senior doctors who were secretly struggling and there was nowhere to turn.
In our powerful conversation, you will learn more about Dana’s advocacy through her podcast, Junior Doctor’s Corner, and hear her honest answers about the fine balance between a patient’s and a doctor's health.

While attending a podcasting conference this week, I connected with my friend Pamela Smith to talk about the power of gratitude. Pamela is a private practice therapist and soon to be podcast host of ‘It’s All Mental’.
In this episode, we talk openly about the anxiety we were both feeling this week with everything we are juggling and how gratitude has been key in shifting our energy and really being present.
We also dig into our gratitude routines and why we believe the next “level” of gratitude is giving back. We discuss the different “levels” of gratitude and how we can take our gratitude practices to the next level through action.
So how do you SHOW gratitude? Pamela and I give a few examples of how we take action on our gratitude which welcomes in more abundance in our lives. As Pamela puts it, “You change the mindset, you change the behaviors, and you change your life”.
Next week we are doing something special in our community! We will be going live with one of our members to learn about their gratitude practices and tips. Connect with us in our private Facebook group to learn more. Remember, together is better!

This week I am introducing to you someone who is incredibly special to me and has played one of the most significant roles not only in my life but also in my healing process from mental illness. In this very special episode, I sat down with my husband Ari Jacobs to discuss what it was like for him to live with someone struggling with depression and anxiety
I wanted to bring Ari on the show to have an authentic dialogue with him about what it was like to walk through my mental health journey as a supporter. This was actually the very first time I have asked him these specific questions and I am so grateful to be able to share them with you because these are the hard conversations that we are reluctant to have but are necessary for the healing journey.
In this episode, Ari shares with us how he was able to be so supportive and not give up on me and our relationship when I was walking through very dark times. We also discuss in the aftermath how we have both changed and what we have learned in the process. Ari also gives two key takeaways that he learned including the importance of preparation and why we should focus on increasing love in our relationships.
I hope this episode is helpful to you by giving a holistic view of the mental health journey. We should not walk through this alone because support is everything. If you are needing support whether you suffer from mental illness or someone you love does, please find us on facebook in our private Facebook group because as always, together is better.

When I first started this podcast, I had no idea how much pain there actually was in this world due to mental illness. Hearing your stories and understanding how many struggle with mental health has solidified this cause even more for me.
If you are new here, Thursdays are special days where we take a moment and give space for gratitude. Why? Gratitude is a powerful tool that will literally attract abundance and more opportunities to experience things to be grateful for. The best part? It’s free.
The more you practice gratitude the more you will see gratitude. It’s a ripple effect. It will improve every area of your life...so why not use it?
This week I interviewed a few people who made a huge difference in my life by walking with me through some of my darkest moments while struggling with depression and anxiety. Reliving those memories during our interview caused me to reflect on how grateful I was for their presence, how far I have come, and how lucky I was to hang on even to the tiniest string of hope.
Lastly, I just wanted to thank YOU for living out loud, sharing your stories, and inspiring the world. We really are making a difference, one story at a time, and breaking the stigma of mental illness. Please connect with us in our private community and let us know what you are grateful for.
