Female friendships are very special. Many times these bonds are shown to last longer than other bonds in a woman’s life whether they are romantic, family, or otherwise. But sometimes; one of the two in a friendship starts to become jealous of their friend for various reasons, and this can develop into a sort of competition between the two which results in the two becoming frenemies. Researchers have studied this phenomenon, and claim that these toxic relationships have three prominent characteristics. The first is being competitive, which is when one views the other more as a rival to outdo than a friend to support. The second is jealousy in the terms of social connections, or material possessions. And the third is distrust, which is actually a lack of respect and care within the friendship.
In the case of Doris Duke and Barbara Hutton; they took this to a whole new level.
So settle in my spooky friends. You are about to hear the crazy tale of two rich women who started out as friends, but their relationship spiralled into being the original frenemies.

We have all heard it at least once in our lives…don’t take candy from strangers. Adults have been saying this to children for years in the hopes to protect them from being kidnapped, and it is believed that this phrase originated from one of the most famous missing person cases in history that is also believed to be America’s first ransom kidnapping.
So get comfortable my spooky friends. You are about to hear the sad tale of the kidnapping of Charley Ross, and about another famous case that at the time was compared to Charley’s case.

When I was a young child; my mom would drop me off at my grandparent’s house while she ran her errands. Grandma would plunk me down on the living room couch, and give me her newspapers to read. But my grandma’s newspapers were not the ones that you likely read as a child. Her’s were tabloids on their best day, and had titles like The National Inquirer, The National Examiner, and The Weekly World News.
It was in one of these that I saw a picture that mesmerized me. A photographer allegedly captured an image of a ghost, and this became one of the most famous spirit photography images of all time.
So settled in my spooky friends. You are about to hear a story about a woman who is said to haunt her former home, and became famous because of it. But before we get started…I want to give you all a little heads up. Today we will be talking about a graphic crime scene. Listener discretion is advised

Introducing Ian Frazier’s Tour of “Paradise Bronx” from The New Yorker Radio Hour.
Follow the show: The New Yorker Radio Hour
“I like to look at places that people aren’t seeing,” says Ian Frazier, the author of “Great Plains” and “Travels in Siberia,” and the new “Paradise Bronx: The Life and Times of New York’s Greatest Borough.” “Not only do people not know about” the Bronx, “but what they know about it is wrong.” The book, which was excerpted recently in The New Yorker, came out of fifteen years’ worth of long walks through the city streets, and on a hot morning recently, he invited a colleague, Zach Helfand, to join him on foot. They admired the majestic Romanesque-style stonework of the High Bridge, where Edgar Allan Poe would walk while mourning his wife, in the eighteen-forties; the impressively tangled connections of the interstate highway system that engineers once called “chicken guts”; and walked east to the Cedar Playground, which has a strong claim to being the birthplace of hip-hop.
Note: The segment misstates the year Edgar Allan Poe moved to the Bronx. Poe moved to New York City in 1844, and to the Bronx in 1846.
