  • DEATH OF NATALIE WOOD - MARTI RULLI

Goodbye Natalie, Goodbye Splendour is the long‑awaited, detailed account of events that led to the mysterious death of Hollywood legend Natalie Wood off the coast of Catalina Island on November 28, 1981. It is a story told by a haunted witness to that fateful evening: Dennis Davern, the young captain of Splendour, the yacht belonging to Wood and husband Robert Wagner. Davern initially backed up Wagner’s version of that evening’s events through a signed statement prepared by attorneys. But Davern’s guilt over failing Natalie tormented him.

Davern reached out to his old friend Marti Rulli, and little by little, at his own emotional pace, he revealed the details of his years in Wood’s employ, of the fateful weekend that Natalie died, and of the events following her death that prevented him from telling the whole story—until now.

  • BEATEN AND LEFT FOR DEAD - DAVID ALFVIN

Teri Jendusa never dreamed she would marry a violent, malignant narcissist like David Larsen. But she did. Why? Simple. Larsen cleverly concealed his true nature until the marriage vows were final. David, an eventual church council president and model citizen, rapidly began to morph into a monster and sociopath, telling Teri on their wedding day, “Now, I own you.”

Beaten and Left For Dead is a book about extreme marital violence, dominant control and psychological torment through the mind of the out-of-control David Larsen. It's also about survival, faith and a mother’s will to live for her children’s sake...as she faces death, face to face.

This is an ideal book for women’s studies and book clubs as it looks inside a large women’s shelter, giving the reader a glimpse of a support network. The author also interviews a counselor who works with violent men with surprising results.

Teri Jendusa-Nicolai continues to crusade for women’s issues to this day and currently works with a Wisconsin commission on domestic violence.

  • CULT OF CHRISTIANITY - JOHN VERNER

Jesus might love you, but does his cult following? John Verner, a trained preacher and former church leader, thoroughly accuses evangelical leaders in the United States of committing cult-like crimes. In this personal, yet insightful, commentary, Verner demonstrates his quirky writing style in a deeply critical manner. Things like prayer, sermons, persecution, hell, apologetics, and other behaviors, are flipped on their head, in an attempt to show how church leaders are exploiting such things for their own power. You'll want to evaluate you own allegiances, no matter your faith, after reading.

  • MENENDEZ MURDERS - ROBERT RAND

A successful entertainment executive making $2 million a year. His former beauty queen wife. Their two sons on the fast track to success. But it was all a façade.

The Menendez saga has captivated the American public since 1989. The killing of José and Kitty Menendez on a quiet Sunday evening in Beverly Hills didn’t make the cover of People magazine until the arrest of their sons seven months later, and the case developed an intense cult following. When the first Menendez trial began in July 1993, the public was convinced that Lyle and Erik were a pair of greedy rich kids who had killed loving, devoted parents.

But the real story remained buried beneath years of dark secrets. Until now.

Journalist Robert Rand, who originally reported on the case for the Miami Herald and Playboy, has followed the Menendez murders from the beginning and has continued investigating and interviewing key sources for 28 years. Rand is the only reporter who covered the original investigation as well as both trials. With unparalleled access to the Menendez family and their history, including interviews with both brothers before and after their arrest, Rand has uncovered extraordinary details that certainly would have changed the fate of the brothers’ first-degree murder conviction and sentencing to life without parole.

In The Menendez Murders: The Shocking Untold Story of the Menedez Family and the Killings That Stunned the Nation, Rand shares these intimate, never-before-revealed findings, including a deeply disturbing history of child abuse and sexual molestation in the Menendez family going back generations, and the shocking admission O.J. Simpson made to one of the Menendez brothers when they were inmates at the L.A. County Men’s Central Jail.

  • BREAKING BAD WOLF - JOHN DOUGAN

This true story is about John Mark Dougan, a Marine Corps veteran and former police officer who had enough of the violence and crime plaguing the Criminal Justice system. He blew the whistle and was retaliated against by the police administration. Dougan started setting up whistleblower websites all around the country for good cops to spill their secrets without fear or retribution. The justice system launched illegal investigation after investigation into every aspect of John's life, and John set up a clever operation to trick them into admitting they were illegally accessing his email and social media accounts. When the FBI ignored John's demands for an investigation, he became BadVolf, starting a digital war with the very law enforcement agencies who were retaliating against him.

John tricked everyone, including the media, into believing he was a Russian hacker before engaging in a strategic, one-man campaign of disinformation, fake news, hacking, social engineering and doxing. John did all the activities that people love to blame on Russia, except he did it as an American citizen, on American soil; retribution and deception the only way to fight back against criminals in charge of local, state and federal American law enforcement agencies.

After an eight-year-long battle, the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided Dougan’s home, ordering surveillance teams to follow and attempt to capture him at any cost. Dougan however, had other plans; he donned a disguise and slipped away into exile using the skills acquired in the Marine Corps, police agencies and from working with technology.

This is the story of how BadVolf was created, and the resulting two-week long escape from these badge-toting criminals is a riveting story that led John to obtain political asylum in Russia.

  • PHIL HARTMAN MURDER - DAWNA KAUFMANN

hil Hartman is best known for his eight brilliant seasons on Saturday Night Live, where his versatility and comedic timing resulted in some of the funniest and most famous sketches in the television show's history. Besides his hilarious impersonations of Phil Donahue, Frank Sinatra and Bill Clinton, Hartman's other indelible characters included Cirroc the Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer, Eugene the Anal Retentive Chef and, of course, Frankenstein. He also starred as pompous radio broadcaster Bill McNeal in the NBC sitcom NewsRadio and voiced numerous classic roles — most memorably washed-up actor and commercial pitchman Troy McClure — on Fox's long-running animated hit The Simpsons.

But Hartman's seemingly charmed life was cut tragically short when he was fatally shot by his troubled third wife, Brynn, who turned a gun on herself several hours later. The shocking and headline-generating turn of events stunned those closest to the couple as well as countless fans who knew Phil only from afar. Now, for the first time ever, the years and moments leading up to his untimely end are described in illuminating detail through information gleaned from exclusive interviews with scores of famous cast mates, close friends and family members as well as private letters, audio/video recordings, extensive police records, and more.

  • CASE AGAINST STEVEN AVERY - KEN KRATZ

The Netflix series Making a Murderer was a runaway hit, with over 19 million US viewers in the first 35 days. The series left many with the opinion that Steven Avery, a man falsely imprisoned for almost 20 years on a previous, unrelated assault charge, had been framed by a corrupt police force and district attorney’s office for the murder of a young photographer. Viewers were outraged, and hundreds of thousands demanded a pardon for Avery. The chief villain of the series? Ken Kratz, the special prosecutor who headed the investigation and trial. Kratz’s later misdeeds—prescription drug abuse and sexual harassment—only cemented belief in his corruption.

This book tells you what Making a Murderer didn’t.

While indignation at the injustice of his first imprisonment makes it tempting to believe in his innocence, Avery: The Case Against Steven Avery and What Making a Murderer Gets Wrong and the evidence shared inside—examined thoroughly and dispassionately—prove that, in this case, the criminal justice system worked just as it should.

With Avery, Ken Kratz puts doubts about Steven Avery’s guilt to rest. In this exclu- sive insider’s look into the controversial case, Kratz lets the evidence tell the story, sharing details and insights unknown to the public. He reveals the facts Making a Murderer conveniently left out and then candidly addresses the aftermath—openly discussing, for the first time, his own struggle with addiction that led him to lose everything.

Avery systematically erases the uncertainties introduced by the Netflix series, confirming, once and for all, that Steven Avery is guilty of the murder of Teresa Halbach.

  • DAVID M. BEERS - REIGN OF INJUSTICE

On September 12, 2001, Michele Harris went missing from a small town in upstate New York. She has never been found, and the mystery surrounding her disappearance remains. Four years after she went missing, her wealthy husband, Cal Harris, was arrested and charged with her murder.

With neither a body nor a murder weapon, Cal was shockingly tried and convicted of her murder. Then new evidence surfaced. His conviction was overturned, and a new trial granted. But once again, he was convicted and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. That conviction, too, was overturned on appeal. The saga continued as Cal went on trial for the third time. This one ended in a mistrial.

By the time Cal went on trial the fourth time, Michele had been missing for nearly 15 years.

Defense investigator, David M. Beers, worked on the Cal Harris case from start-to-finish. His account, “Reign of Injustice,” walks you through the details and events of the case never before revealed. It provides a inside view of the scandalous case facts you will not find elsewhere, including why he considers Cal’s story a reign of injustice.

  • Free Ryan Ferguson - Brian D'Ambrosio

We want to avert our eyes in situations like Ryan Ferguson’s, but we can’t – and shouldn’t.

Ryan was convicted in 2005 of the 2001 murder and robbery of sport’s editor Kent Heitholt. As of September 1, 2013, Missouri keeps Ryan imprisoned after the only witnesses against him have admitted perjury at a habeas hearing.

When Ryan’s alleged accomplice, Charles Erickson, and former accuser, Jerry Trump, took the stand in his appeal both subjected themselves to perjury charges by recanting. In April 2012, both men disavowed their earlier statements, but the verdict remains valid, and Ryan endures incarceration.

Even more disquieting, Trump says former Boone County prosecutor Kevin Crane, now a circuit court judge, coached him to identify Ferguson and Erickson. No forensic evidence connects Ryan or Chuck to the scene of the crime.

Ryan’s life whittles down to what transpired during eighteen minutes in the early morning hours the day after Halloween in 2001. Since 2004, he has been robbed from his life and family by the criminal justice system. His conviction is a ghost that will haunt us until the state of Missouri comes to grips with what has happened.

Ryan’s situation contains all the typical features of exoneration cases: eyewitness misidentification, absent forensics, phony confessions, abysmal lawyering and disregarded testimony. Each was a factor in his 2005 trial.

The goal of this project is to help keep Ryan’s story a centrifugal force in Missouri’s political, social, cultural, and intellectual environments. To pry apart the senseless obstinacy that prohibits the acknowledgment of mistakes. May this be the shout that further pries loose the avalanche of dishonesty – the verbal equivalent of throwing gasoline on a fire.

Before the corroded bridge of truth and justice can be crossed, it first must be reconstructed.

Here we cross Ryan Ferguson’s sad story of blood and injustice, rooted in the violence of an incident bound by a few minutes of darkness – a tale of a “dream killer” and killed dreams.

  • IN BROAD DAYLIGHT - HARRY MACLEAN

Ken Rex McElroy terrorized the residents of several counties in northwestern Missouri for a score of years. He raped young girls and brutalized them after they went to live with him or even married him; he shot at least two men; he stole cattle and hogs, and burned down the houses of some who interfered with his criminal activities. Thanks to the expert efforts of his lawyer and the pro-defendant bias of state laws, he served no more than a few days in jail, the author shows. In 1981, sentenced for the shooting of a popular grocer and free on bail, he was killed by the men of Skidmore, the center of his felonies; they closed ranks against all attempts to identify those who had pulled the triggers. Written by a first-time author, this is an engrossing, credible examination of the way vigilante action can take over when the law appears to be powerless. BOMC and QPBC alternates
