Title: The Eight Curious Cases of Inspector Zhang
    Author: Stephen Leather
    Narrator: David Thorpe

Length: 8 hrs and 39 mins

    Publisher's Summary:
Crimes are rare in Singapore, but when there's one that has the police baffled, it is Inspector Zhang that they turn to.
From locked-room mysteries to murders disguised as suicide, Inspector Zhang is able to draw on his experience as a detective along with tricks he has learned from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie. See if you can solve the crimes before the Inspector - the clues are there!
    Members Reviews:
    My favorite character: Inspector Zhang.
I have read all of Stephen Leather's Inspector Zhang books. Inspector Zhang is the Singapore version of Detective Columbo. The books are an easy read and well written. Excellent and definitely one of my favorite authors.
Zhang doesn't fly the Los Angeles to Honolulu run
"Our endeavour is to be the cutting edge in crime fighting. We will be an exemplary investigation agency which is tenacious in its search for the truth to uphold justice." â Vision statement of the Singapore CID, from the Singapore Police Force website
In case you haven't come across this cop on the beat before, THE EIGHT CURIOUS CASES OF INSPECTOR ZHANG by Stephen Leather introduces you to another ongoing literary hero in his active stable. He joins MI5 operative Dan "Spider" Shepherd and the private investigator of the Dark Side Jack Nightingale.
Inspector Zhang is of the Singapore Police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) working out of the Police Cantonment Complex on New Bridge Road.
In the first of the eight chapters, Zhang complains to his faithful sidekick, Sergeant Lee, that the low crime rate in Singapore means that there are too few murders of quality to require his investigatory skills. Bummer! Then, in the remainder of the book, he proceeds to nimbly cope with a veritable crime wave.
Sergeant Lee, though described as one of the CID's most promising sergeants, appears to be nothing more than a stenographer for the taking of notes while Zhang does the heavy lifting. Her character offers little.
Zhang is a great fan of those detective stories featuring Hercule Poirot, Sherlock Holmes, and the heroes of John Dickinson Carr. He dreams of a caseload just like theirs. Perhaps this says more about the author Stephen Leather than Zhang. In any case, Leather has fashioned here eight short mysteries of reasonable cleverness for his hero to solve and Lee to record in her notebook. The eight are nicely distributed in different locales, one even taking place aboard an airliner in flight â a "locked room" mystery if there ever was one.
As a young reader, I started out devouring all the Hardy Boys books, and then graduated to Sherlock Holmes and a smattering of Carr's works. Finally, before drifting away from the genre, I most enjoyed following Denis Nayland Smith and Dr. Petrie pursue Fu Manchu around London's foggy East End. (Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu series is nowadays considered oh so politically incorrect because of its stereotyping of the "evil Chinaman." So, the PC point is? I love that Fu annoys some people so much.)
While I read very little in the way of detective fiction anymore (except Jack Nightingale), THE EIGHT CURIOUS CASES OF INSPECTOR ZHANG provided welcome diversion on recent flights to and from Hawaii. It certainly beat the airline's self-adulatory magazine in the seat pocket in front of me.

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Mahu -- a generally negative Hawaiian term for homosexuals -- introduces a unique character to detective fiction. Kimo Kanapa'aka is a handsome, mixed-race surfer living in Honolulu, a police detective confronting his homosexuality in an atmosphere of macho bravado within the police force. A man of intelligence, strength, honesty, resourcefulness, and intense dedication to the people of Hawaii, Kimo is a hard-boiled hero you will never forget. Fast-paced, intricately plotted, thoroughly enjoyable, this is a sexy, surprisingly moving mystery about discovering oneself as much as catching a killer.

Wonderful Example of the Coming Out Experinence
Two things I really really liked about this book. First it wasn't filled with gratuitous sex. The other was the fact that it gave a very authentic depiction of the struggles of man being coming out to his world. It showed the very real challenges to develop a new working relationship with his family that he has always loved but now feels estranged from. Joel Leslie did an awesome job as usual. He is probably the best man to man numerators out there.
    Another Brilliant Performance!
Joel Leslie could make the phone book exotic and interesting. Excellent, fantastic audio experience.
    Good mystery,
The narration: I am a big fan of Joel Leslie. I have listened to thirty-three books narrated by him and though Im sure that is no record or anything, I have enjoyed all of those books. He has provided dozens of accents for the characters in previous books and is great at modulating voices within the same accent so that each character has his or her own sound. In Mahu, over half of the characters in the book speak with an Asian accent, since it takes place in Hawaii. Unfortunately, I didnt enjoy some of the narrators accents in this book. The Asian accents sound too strong and just a little too broken for me. It did make the experience a little less enjoyable, but that doesnt reflect on Joels ability to pull me into a story with his voice acting. He emotes so well. And though I have some critique for the narration in Mahu, I know that will not effect my purchasing audiobooks narrated by Joel Leslie in the future. I am still a big fan.
The story: I looked up the word Mahu before I started listening to the book and discovered it is a Hawaiian term for people who embody both the male and female spirit. Its also known as a third gender. The Hawaiian culture was ahead of time when it came to gender identity. From reading this book, it seems like it is used as an insulting name for gay and lesbian women at the time the story was written. The original publication of this story was in 2005, I believe, and I think the story takes place around that time as well. Kimo running to find a pay phone makes me believe that this story takes place before everyone carried cell phones, but after the AIDS epidemic in the 80s and 90s.
The main character of this story is Kimo Kanapaaka. At the beginning of the story he is very closeted and a bit in denial of his sexuality. He is an undercover detective who has only had relationships with women. He and his team go out for a drink after a bust goes bad, but what happens after that changes Kimos whole life. Kimo stumbles across a body outside a gay bar and he starts to compromise himself in order to protect his secret. Only he cant continue to keep silent about that either. Not completely.

"A quirky mystery of violent death and rare records." (The Sunday Times)
    Members Reviews:
    2nd time around
I loved the 1st book. The characters were great and the link in with music and vinyl worked well. This 2nd book carried on for another adventure and was a really cool mystery. Thoroughly enjoyed it and hope a 3rd book comes out!!
    Bit quirky but fun listen
What other book might you compare The Run Out Groove to, and why?
Can't think of a book but ...a bit of a low key Colin Bateman, which means funny in a dry way and rather addictive
What does Finlay Robertson bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
Didn't notice the reader which means he must be good!
    Any additional comments?
Easy to listen to in a good way
I am bereft to have finished
This is the second in a series that ticks all my boxes. Vinyl, cats, mystery, coffee and charity shops. Fantastic. I enjoyed it a little more than the first book. Andrew, what do I have to do to get you to write another very quickly?
Even better than the first Vinyl Detective Mystery
Would you listen to The Run Out Groove again? Why?
This was one of those books that I couldn't wait to finish but regretted it when I did. It was great fun from beginning to end and had me chuckling out loud on several occasions. I was surprised to find how much I had come to regard the characters as friends.
An easy and rewarding listen - well written, equally well narrated, and definitely one of my favourite audiobooks.
not as good as the last one
Shame this didn't match up to the last book for me. The story wasn't as good. I will check out the next one, as long as the Author drops the Cleanhead nickname, it's worn thin in this book and used too often

Another 5 Star Roy Ballard... Great Series!!!!
This is the forth book in the Roy Ballard series. I've listened to the other three as well and they are equally as good. I had been hesitant about purchasing another book from this author because I had originally purchased a book from his "Blanco County" series and I couldn't even finish the book. This series is written so differently if I didn't know better I would swear it was written by a different author.
Anyway, in this book a young man goes overboard off of a party barge in a very large lake. After that all of the party goers claim no knowledge and no one sees him again. Later that night another man who was at the party is assaulted in his home. Little is stolen but his cell phone is one of the items.
Roy Ballard is a videographer who films people committing insurance fraud. That is not the case here but a relative of the missing man is one of Ballard's clients and she doesn't believe it was an accident.
Ballard picks up clues a little bit at a time, each clue points his investigation in a different direction giving the reader multiple plausible scenarios throughout the book. It's not until almost the end when he gets the final clue pointing to what really happened on the barge that night and whether or not a crime was committed.
Johnny Peppers narrates this and the other Roy Ballard books. He does an excellent job.
    This book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
If you found this review helpful please indicate so.
    Thank You.
    This one is the best!
I've read the first 4 Roy Ballard books, and this one is the best but you won't find out why until the very end.
My only quibble with this (& it's quite minor albeit perplexing sometimes), is that the narrator, as good as he is, doesn't often properly distinguish between a male and a female voice. It's hard sometimes to tell when she is speaking and when he is speaking.
Other than that, this is a great series I can't wait for book 5 even though I will probably have to! So I shall start Reading his other series of Texas mysteries - I can't wait!

    Love, Love, Love This Author
Blake Pierce's books are fantastic. They grab you from the opening lines and keep you reading until the end. Avery Black is an outstanding detective and main character.......I feel like I know her and would like to meet her to talk over a cup of coffee. The way she gets into the minds of the criminals is amazing. The storylines Blake Pierce writes are fast paced, hard gripping and thrilling. He has moved to my list of favorite authors!
    UNBELIEVABLE
I can't believe how intense these books are. Once you start one it's like you're as caught up in the insanity as Black or the killer. I'll probably have some very intense dreams.
    Great writer to read
I am addicted to Blake Pierce right now. Have read Riley Paige, Mackenzie White, Avery Black and Keri Locke and preordered the next in each of these series. I just like the way he write. Stories believable, character interaction is interesting and the books are easy to read. I usually finish them in one sitting because I just want to know what happens
    The best yet
This was the best in this series yet. A great story with none of the expected easy turns, instead, twist and turns to an exciting ending. Awesome book!
    the usual
the usual dramas Avery deals with in EVERY book.
Watch out for the really good action scene almost at the end.

    Members Reviews:
    Great Mystery!
This Audible version of Linda Weaver Clarke's book was wonderful! I love her narrator, Diane Lehman. She is so full of expression and very talented! I loved listening to someone "tell me a story". I could listen as I drove to and from work and as I commuted on the train and even while fixing dinner. It's a great way to "multi-task".
I loved Linda's book! It's a great cozy mystery and for me it was awesome because she always writes about places that I know. This time her book took me to my old home in California, Palm Springs, and as she described it, I could totally visualize it! Then they were headed to Ventura Harbor. I used to live in Ojai which is very close by and trips to the beach in Ventura were a remembrance of years past for me!
But aside from this, the book held my attention to the very end. My only disappointment was that this is book 7 and will be the last of this series. I loved this clean romance and the resolution to the mystery. I look forward to reading other books from this great author.
I received an Audible version of this book from the author for my honest review, which I have given. All thoughts are my own.
Delightful Conclusion to Sweet Cozy Mystery Series
    Any additional comments?
The Lighthouse Secret is the seventh cozy mystery in the Amelia Moore Detective Series written by Linda Weaver Clarke. This story begins sooner after Amelia and her partner Rick Bonito return from their honeymoon. Before starting into a new assignment, the couple investigate the supposed drowning of Rick's uncle, Antonio Bonito. Uncle Antonio's accidental death never sat right with Rick or his father because he was an excellent swimmer and his body was never found.
Like in prior Amelia Moore books, Amelia and Rick experienced some local sightseeing and crossed items off their "bucket lists" (things they'd like to enjoy during their lifetime). This time they visited several lighthouses and spent the night in one of them, and they flew in a water aircraft. Having taken several tours of lighthouses in the Portland, Maine area a few years ago, I was very envious of the lighthouses Amelia and Rick visited!
As I've mentioned in prior reviews of books in this series, I love how Rick and Amelia complement each other in their strengths and weaknesses, as well as compliment each other often with kind words and encouragement. They remind me a lot of husband and wife detective team from the early 1980s TV series, Hart to Hart.

    Rollicking fun!
If you could sum up Bubba and the Missing Woman in three words, what would they be?
    Entertaining, lovable, charming
Who was your favorite character and why?
Bubba - he's humble, intrepid and adorable.
Have you listened to any of Mike Algers other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes. The narration of this book is naturally more animated due to the personalities of the characters. The voices of all the characters are well done and easy to distinguish from one another.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me laugh out loud!
    Any additional comments?
I'm looking forward to more from this author!
    Bubba does it again!
Would you listen to Bubba and the Missing Woman again? Why?
Yes, I can't wait until Audible has another Bubba adventure available.
What did you like best about this story?
C.L. Bevill has small town Texas nailed! Her descriptions of the people and places are wonderful. The tales are flush with Texas humor. The stories are wonder action mysteries. I was on the edge of my seat worried about 'The Missing Woman' to the last chapter.
Have you listened to any of Mike Algers other performances before? How does this one compare?
This was my first exposure to Mr. Alger's Narration, but I can't imagine anyone else telling Bubba's stories. I would be curious to see what else he has done.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
So many. The man with the Hounds telling Bubba he wouldn't take his money. The little girl realizing Bubba loves her aunt. I can't say Bubba doesn't have a mean bone in his body, but he has a lot more kind one. He goes out of his way to be respectful to pretty much anyone.
    Any additional comments?
When ever possible my wife and I prefer Audio books for stories we are both interested in. Cuts down on fights over who reads a book first and exchanges like "Have you got to the part...DON'T TELL ME DON'T TELL ME DONT TELL ME!"
I hope the rest of Bubba's adventures make it in to Audio format...SOON!
    OMG!!!
I loved this book!!! I love all of the Bubba books I have read so far.
