It's ok, not great

In The Hangman's Daughter, a former marine takes over a prison space ship and uses the prisoners as mercenaries. The premise is intriguing, but there isn't much substance here. While there is a lot of action, and it is entertaining at times, most of the characters are pretty flat and have no development, and there is a lot lacking in the world building. The main character Miska is a tough character, but she never really shows any growth. We never figure out what any of Miska's true motivations are, other than avenging the death of her father. Overall, it misses a lot of its potential and ends up being just ok.

Too much "F"oul language.

This was the first audible book we didn't finish.

Too much use of the F word in various forms.

I was in the Navy and have Marine friends. Nothing compares to this language.

Action thriller sci-fi

I found this a bit of a struggle. The characters are a little wooden and a little too obvious. The storyline is okay-ish, but I do wish writers wouldn't sacrifice forward momentum with expositional back story.

Performance was 10/10 but the story was just ok

I liked this book. The voice actress was superb and everything was described in such a descriptive way which made the fight scenes amazing to listen to buy the story was just "ok". It was interesting and I did want to keep listening to the next chapter but at random times I would just phase out in the car sometimes and not bother rewinding the audio. Giving it a 4/5 from the voice acting for the amazing action scenes and bringing the main characters to life is such a descriptive way.

Failure to Launch

So, after four attempts to listen to this one I'm not quite at the halfway stage and it's time to accept that it just isn't going to take off for me. I think the concept was fine but the writing felt very staid and the characters one-dimensional. The lead Miska was an uneven mix and simply didn't make me care for her in any way.

Amy Finnegan tries very hard to lift it and does a quality job. It's a really tough gig as a female narrator because although we have Miska in the lead she occupies a world of stereotypical tough guys and creepy blokes. Very hard combination for any narrator and I think she emerges from this with a lot of credit.

Overall though it just didn't work for me and it's not a series I can imagine going any further with.

60% Boring And 40% Interesting

The book begins with an incredibly dull and tedious opening, which is followed by needless and uninteresting details. Only my Audible training got me through the first several hours. The last 40% of the book is interesting.

The narrator, Dina Perlman, is sometimes criticized because I think she reminds listeners of guests on the Maury TV show. But, I have a different view. First, she is a perfect fit as the narrator of Jane Carver of Waar which is a hilarious parody of the John Carter books by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Second, a quick Google search shows Dina Perlman is a beautiful woman who is both an actress and a comedian. Dina Perlman uses her talents to deliver fun to the books she narrates.

Great Sequel

There's more action in this sequel than in the first book. Especially in the last half when they leave the planet and we meet Hail's friends from her gun running days. But it still has all the heart and political intrigue of Behind the Throne. Empress Hail and her bodyguards are getting closer. The dialog back and forth between them adds little touches of humor.

The narration by Angele Masters just keeps getting better too. She handles all the action as well as the dialog smoothly and brings the story to life.

One Word "Excellent "

Amateur on every level....

I recognize that every author isnt trying to write a best-seller, but this is just painful. There are so few adjectives/descriptives in this book it reads like a freshmen in high school wrote it. ...and he pulled a sauce pot to make the sauce out of the cupboard. I opened the entrance and he walked in. The elementary writing coupled with the lackluster (and thats probably more credit than is truly deserved) performance, I couldnt make it through this book. I tried to give the benefit of the doubt by getting the second book after the first one was somewhat of a disappointment, but I should have quit when I was ahead.

This must have been written for YA. I wish there was an age rating so I can avoid disasters like this in the future. Sorry. Im returning this!

I hesitate to call this series heartwarming, but it really is. Between the greasy entrails and flesh-eating monsters, the core group of this series is very in touch with their feelings. I would like to think this kind of scenario would bring out the best of humanity, but I think my emotions would die the first time I saw Aunt Sally take a bite out of Dad. A wonderfully different take on the zombie apocalypse, ZT has made me care about these people. I cannot wait to find out what happens next! The narrator has a mid-range voice that is perfect for this type of story, and does a great job with the various voices.

Kickass

I like the characters the pacing and the storyline. This story is starting to kickoff and enjoying the ride.

Awesome. Couldn't put it down.

Buy this now. The author is a genius. This story should be made into a movie. Easy to listen to and narrated well. Loved the character development. I was both amused and freaked out by Mally. Made me think twice about artificial intelligence.

The subterfuge was quite thick uncovering the real reason for deceit held me to my seat through the very end. I sure hope there's a sequel!

This is a very well written and well narrated audiobook. The storyline is strong, the characters very believable and plot well thought out and compelling. I generally listen to audiobooks on my drive to work, but found myself looking for reasons to plug the ear buds in and listen more.

Bravo Mr Ikenberry and well read Mr Dunford.

I can't wait for the next book, in what I hope, will become a series of novels.

great start to a new and different story

This audio book was given to me to review. The story is very interesting and has a different twist. I enjoyed it and cant wait for the next book in this series.The narration was very good and the story moved at a good pace. Interesting story line with enemy's from earth and outer space.

Both books I have listen to by Ikenberry have been great. Enjoyed the story here with a lot of potential for a great series. Well worth the credit.

This is one story that many will love

Onto number three! This series, although a bit out of my comfort zone, just keeps getting better and better.

Scratch has been through quite a bit. He's proven himself but he also has allies that are there for him, and luckily, at the right place and at the right time. He also could have been killed off multiple times by all the freaks (Bobby's word, not mine) that want to kill him but they keep pulling their punches. It's like they like the sport of keeping him alive. That and they keep telling him he's nothing compared to what's coming.

Needless to say the drama in this is top notch. There's always so much going on. At one point he says that it's been a couple weeks and with the amount of crap he's been through I was surprised. Some chapters are one day or evening long and he progresses the story by explaining step by step what is happening. That may sound boring but instead it's riveting. It keeps me on the edge of my seat. That and the fact that he's always running head long into some other thrilling cat and mouse chase. Sometimes it's hard to tell who is the cat and who is the mouse.

The narrator once again is able to use inflection in such a way as to allow the listening to know when the action is starting and when it's dissipating.

Good story!

A few clinks in the story line, but a good description of an apocalypse scenerio in the United States.

The book started out pretty good, but the further you went, the dumber it got. When they introduced the ridiculous Isys element it was just plain ridiculous. Don't waste your time, there are much better survival books than this.

No time read that is why I love audio books so much.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Strike Point - the Trilogy?

My husband would say, watching me stomp around house with my ear buds in yelling at the people in the book. This book wasn't written as a how to but a how not. I think that is why I loved it.

The wedding, it was a sweet moment.

Juvenile

Someone please tell the author that contractions make the dialogue sound more natural. Between the narrator giving the protagonist the voice of a 12 year old and the author being fixated on how teen boys can't control their erection, this book came across as simply juvenile. Of course the older women were worried about being seen as "cougars" but that didn't stop them from indicating repeatedly that they were attracted to the 15 YEAR OLD BOY!

it read like a child's fantasy where he is able to solve all problems including functioning as a starship Captain in battle... skip this one, trust me.

Akward, and a bit aweful

What disappointed you about Metal Boxes?

I only listened to a couple of chapters before I had to stop. I like pulp military sci fi, so no issues with the genre. but this was rubish, there was a ten minute period talking about the main characters erection. Seriously. I expect a little sex, but that level of detail was jarring. I got several chapters past that, but it stuck out, pun intended.

Would you ever listen to anything by Alan Black again?

Maybe, but more than likely not.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

His tempo and clipped words, even the narrator couldn't wait to finish the book. The Instructors voice in the beginning did make me laugh out loud but other than that terrible.

The writing was terrible, like a bad dub of a soap opera, add in an infatuation with an erection it was a no go.

Sometimes it takes a while to get used to a narrator. I gave this book several chapters before I couldn't take it and gave up. He sounds like he's fairly young, which was cool considering the age of the main character. This narrator was just flattening out all the characters with his performance though. Maybe he gets better over the course of the series??? I don't plan to find out.

Predictable

Better suited to a juvenile science fiction fan. Narrator is inconsistent in his characterizations, after while every character sounds like they are from Arkansas.

the book took a different view point then most book do in this genre. I found my self torn to either stop reading or keep going. I finished it in three days

unintelligent

To be fair I did not listen to the entire book. I couldn't get through the first 6 chapters. I myself keep my firearm close, and believe no one should be lackadaisical about the world around them. This book makes it sound like peppers are always the crazy ones who shoot first not caring about the question. I will leave that to all the militia types. This book seems to be right up their alley.

Love the genre. First time I can say I don't like the story. Is filled with hate and predjudice. Themes lack direction at times and take too long to get to point. Will not be buying any more from this particular author.

Really wanted to like this more, but just couldn't

There are lots of pieces here to like. They just don't fit together in one solid story. There are too many switch backs, coincidences and weak sub-plots. The heroine is developed enough to follow along but the supporting characters and motives are weak. The author depends too much on twist of fate to make the story durable.

The narrator is excellent and does a very good job with what he has to work with. Good character differentiation, story pace and tone. Enjoyable to listen to.

This is a favorite genre for me as a reader / listener. However, this is not one of my favorite experiences.

Could not finish the book

This was horrible. The story was immature and lacking depth...kinda like getting to the pool only to find out it's all kiddy pool depth. Accents were horrible! Logic escaped the author on too many occasions for me to enjoy the book...or even finish it.
