    Title: Mort(e)

    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
A genre-busting postapocalyptic first novel - a pause-resisting adventure channeling Animal Farm as imagined by Cormac McCarthy
The "war with no name" has begun; its goal, human extinction. The instigator of this war is the Colony, a race of intelligent ants who, for thousands of years, have been silently building an army that will forever eradicate the destructive, oppressive humans. Under the Colony's watchful eye, this utopia will be free of the humans' penchant for violence, exploitation, and religious superstition. The final step in the Colony's war effort is the transformation of surface animals into high-functioning two-legged beings who will rise up and kill their masters.
Former house cat turned war hero Mort(e) is famous for taking on the most dangerous missions and fighting the dreaded human bioweapon EMSAH. But the true motivation behind Mort(e)'s recklessness is his ongoing search for a pretransformation friend - a dog named Sheba. When he receives a mysterious message from the dwindling human resistance claiming Sheba is alive, he begins a journey that will take him from the remaining human strongholds to the heart of the Colony, where he will discover the source of EMSAH and learn the ultimate fate of all earth's creatures.
    Editorial Reviews:
Editors Select, January 2015 - I now know without a doubt that my cat has it out for me since Ive caught her three times hanging out on my copy of Mort(e), as if surreptitiously taking notes. Robert Repinos highly anticipated debut has shades of my favorite book from 2014, The Bees, but its much darker. A colony of super intelligent ants is planning the vengeful destruction of humanity, turning cats and dogs into soldiers, and at the center of our story is the great warrior Mort(e) (formerly a neutered, declawed housecat named Sebastian). Ok, so this might all sound ridiculous, but its actually blindingly smart and well-executed. Though less of a direct parable than Animal Farm, the big issues of mortality, love, honor, and loyalty are all at play here in a bleak, well-imagined apocalyptic world.

    Just don't think about plausibility
Would you listen to Mort(e) again? Why?
No. It was fun but I wouldn't spend the time re-listening.
What does Bronson Pinchot bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I've listened to other books he has read and he's a great narrator. This book's premise is crazy implausible, but he pulled me into the story and characters so strongly that it didn't matter.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Probably not. The long passages about the queen were somewhat tedious (that's why 4 rather than 5 stars).
    Any additional comments?
I put this book in my wish list after reading a review on Slate.com titled "The best post-apocalyptic cat detective story you'll ever read." So far, it is.
    Couldn't Make Myself Care
Mort(e) is about the housecat formerly called Sebastian, transformed into a catman by the ant-queen's master plan to uplift the animals and destroy the humans, and his quest to find his doggy friend Sheba.

ignoramus emo narrator can't pronounce things!
A rather stolid and predictable slog to an inevitable rather than epic conclusion with several spin-off series apparently ensuing on a devastated Earth and among mercenaries fighting on the colony worlds... Anyway, the increasingly annoying emo ignoramus narrator who can't pronounce many dozens of English and foreign words properly was a definite detraction from my enjoyment... I liked many books in this series and considered them entertaining, albeit not ground-breaking or ingeniously literary, but this book just wasn't up to par compared to the rest, and contained a lot of repetitive recap.
Great series, cant wait for the next two series!
Awesome, great military sci-fi! Got used to the performers voice. I like the voice effects he uses for comm talk.
    pause
pause was the most used word in this story, it started to wear thin but the story was entertaining
exceptional end to a great story line
As always the storyline was excellent narrator was also sublime. definitely recommended to military sci-fi buffs everywhere

    Immersed in this seried
I've spent the last month immersed in this series! Reapers Run hooked me and I just couldn't stop.
The characters are great and just keep moving forward into more challenging situations!
Start at the beginning and prepare to enter a different reality!
    Great prep for the finale
By the end of this book, it felt like VanDyke was tying up loose ends before the coming of the Destroyer - definitely not a bad thing. It's focused around Russia and pulling the last of the earth holdouts into the fold before the divisions cause humanity to collapse. It felt like a fairly 'tactical' book, focusing mostly on small plots rather than the overarching strategy of humanity, but this wasn't necessarily a bad thing. We finally see what happens to characters introduced a couple books back in the series and I realized by the end that I was pleasantly surprised - some characters remained in the roles that they had near the beginning of the series while others have grown in wildly unexpected (but logical and pleasant) ways. It's a great second-to-last entry in the Plague Wars and I was happy to read it. As usual, the plot remains fast paced and interesting.
A PLOT THAT WILL KEEP YOU HOOKED UNTIL THE LAST PAGE!
Author David VanDyke's 5th book in the Plague Wars gives us another intriguing plot that is impossible to put down (and easily read in one sitting). In book 5 we see learn more of "Spooky's" actions/goals and of the new cyborgs. While this book would be a great read on its own I'd urge anyone interested to start from the beginning to understand how this all started and what the ultimate objective is: defeating the Meme at all costs. A truly fascinating story that delves into social & political areas rarely touched in science fiction novels. I rarely write reviews but these books stand out and above the usual genre.
    Once again an excellent adventure
I love the evolution of Spooky Nguyen in this latest evolution of the Plague Wars series. The continued intermix of the characters I have come to love across the continents of the world VanDyke has built. Each character continues to evolve and change in new and interesting ways as they learn more about the long term effects of living with the Eden virus. The global political plots are interesting without overtaxing the story and keep moving and complex. Looking forward to reading the next installment!
    Five Stars
    Great read!

    Publisher's Summary:
General Jake Taylor and his army of cyborg soldiers are veterans of Erastus, a planet so brutal, so hellish, it is called Gehenna by the men sent to fight and die there. He and his comrades battled for years in the most appalling conditions human beings have ever endured, believing the entire time they were protecting Earth from bloodthirsty alien monsters. But it was all a lie, the cynical propaganda of the totalitarian regime that rules over all mankind.
The alien Tegeri, and their bio-mechanical soldiers Taylors men call the Machines, were the victims, targeted by a regime that needed an enemy to consolidate its absolute rule over mankind. For decades, men like Taylor and his soldiers were the aggressors, unwittingly fighting an unjust war. But when the Tegeri chose Taylor as their contact and finally told him the horrible truth, he rallied the veterans of Erastus for a new battle, one to free Earth from its self-appointed masters.
Taylors soldiers begin the long campaign back to Earth, toward a reckoning with the brutal government they are sworn to destroy. The heart of this force is the Ten Thousand, surgically-altered Supersoldiers, products of an experimental enhancement program, and the first of their kind. But they are not the last, and on the planet Juno they will meet their counterparts, the Black Corps, a force created by Earths government specifically to destroy them. The Black Corps outnumbers Taylors soldiers 2-1, and they have a vast advantage in supply and logistical support. But Taylors men are veterans of the furnace of Gehenna, and they dont die easily.
But there is more at stake than the freedom of humanity, greater consequences to their fight than even Taylor can imagine. For there is another alien race, one shrouded in legend and myth, known to the Tegeri only as the Darkness. Long ago the Darkness.

Loved the first book, this one, too redundant.
Wasted too much time on reintroducing the first. Good thing in the front of a sequel, however, continued to do so throughout.
    Good story great narrator
He likes to do flash backs in the middle of things happening which makes it very difficult not to be frustrated and it's not just that he does the flash forward or back it's how he does it don't make us feel like we just dropped off a cliff in a storyline other than that well written excellently narrated
    A Big Yawn
First book was intriguing. However this one is a whiny yawn. Tried twice, couldn't finish.
    Not So Good
The author repeats the same ideas, chapters and sentences hundreds of times. It would have been a great 2 hour book.
    Great Military SciFi
Where does The Ten Thousand: Portal Wars II rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I place the entire series in the top tier. That being defined as books that have caused me actively find excuses to keep me listining or have caused me to lose sleep from not wanting to put it down for the night
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
It was somewhat predictable, however it was very satisfing
Have you listened to any of Liam Owens other performances before? How does this one compare?

I enjoyed this quite a bit.
The Freehold having to reign in companies somewhat was interesting
    always a good read
this is a great series he has a nice twist to the plot but it is kind of predictable
    FINALLY!
I've loved the Freehold Series for years, but somehow I missed THIS book until now. I've followed Mr. Williamson's Books for a LONG time, and knew he was going to make his mark on Sci-Fi almost from the start. I've talked with him several times in the past and several things were very clear within the first 5 minutes of conversation... He has a DEEP way of looking at Society (and "Societies"), and often flips problems on their side to look at them from unexpected angles. Whenever an author can point out flaws in "Common General Thinking", and make others REALLY think about "What everyone takes for granted", we can all learn something from it... Good, Bad, Ugly, or Beautiful.
Mr. Williamson has gone that extra mile to point out "What everyone knows with so much surety that we never even think about it", is OFTEN very flawed! Of COURSE it's probably flawed if we're so sure about something that we never "Think it out for ourselves". We are NOT the Center of the Universe. Just because we know, and admit, that we're 'flawed', doesn't excuse us for not at least TRYING to become better.
There is no such thing as a "Perfect Society", "Utopian Society", etc, and anyone that claims to be building one is reaching for your wallet with one hand, and your freedom with the other. If a society is NOT "In Flux", then it's definitely NOT improving itself.
I like several of the lessons from this book greatly... No one has "The" answer, but if we consider possible answers from many sources, we can at least obtain a 'better' answer overall... we fail right off the bat if we pre-judge the SOURCE of a possible better answer without at least listening to what they have to say. I guess that's the wordy way of repeating an old simple saying: "Don't judge a book by it's cover"
"Capitalism" is NOT a dirty word. There are evil Capitalists, just like there are evil Religious Leaders; Just because a few evil people practice a concept, doesn't make the entire concept 'evil' (You may think the short way of explaining that concept is: "One bad Apple doesn't spoil the entire basket". But actually, 'One bad Apple DOES spoil the entire basket of Apples'...

    Discussion Book
This is one of those books were they discuss everything. The discussion is often intellectual and even sometimes entertaining, but mostly very little happens.
    Excellent in every way
As a real chaplain and fan of science fiction I can say this is one of the best books I've ever read. The alien culture is imaginative, thought-provoking and creative while still sharing the fun of standard bug aliens. The philosophical and religious questions of military and Chaplaincy are also very compelling and accurate. Plus the narrator has many sutle and diverse character voices
Refreshing take on religion in sci if
This is a story of mankind's run up against a powerful and overwhelming alien. The story takes place after this conflict has started and details the impact that a couple of individuals can have on such events. Good stuff it is.
As for the religion part, it is there but is nothing overwhelming or even takes up much of the story. The refreshing part is that it is not something portrayed as bad or something that had negative influences within the world this story creates. That is much different in that most other stories, when they touch upon religion, make it out as a influence that drives evil or poor behavior and in many cases something that makes those involved backwards. This type of handling of religion is so common that it is a trope in science fiction and easily predictable and thus boring.
    Wonderfully written and narrated
Starship Troopers meets The Lords of Discipline, flavored with a bit of The Gospel According to Gamaliel Crucis. Well written and expertly narrated. I really enjoyed how the story shifted back and forth from training and present day. Highly recommended.
Well written sci-fi with some clever plot devices
I enjoyed listening to this novel. The narrator does a good job voicing the many characters in this novel. The main character is an effectively portrayed reluctant hero.
There is a fair amount of discussion of religion in the book, but it is not heavy handed or denomination specific.
Torgersen did a good job with his aliens.

Seeking sanctuary, Neils group is pursued by both the living and the dead, all yearning for their deaths. The survivors fled Anchorage and its streets teeming with flesh-eating zombies, narrowly escaping with their lives and now face dangers along Alaskas Seward Highway which stretches southward to Seward, Alaska where it ends at the sea. Their options limited and their time running out, Neil and the others find themselves hoping against hope that Whittier has the answers. They must first find their own way into the city and then trust that the infection has not preceded them.
Resolution is the fourth and final installment in the Alaskan Undead Apocalypse series.
    Members Reviews:
    Easy and enjoyable read
Found the story easy to digest. We meet up with another group of survivors and whats cool about that is that we hear about their story from the start of the apocalypse, so its like a whole new book and story. The new group and our old friends do meet up and start doing what they have to do.
A lot of gore, killing and dying. We get to know the people who die just enough to pity them. The bad guys are portrayed in a shade of grey, manage to get depth in almost all the characters.
The narrator is just so comfortable to listen to, not over acting, just enough to sound interesting.
Good story, ending felt like an ending, but maybe more will be coming anyways? Hope so.
Slow to warm up, but then it's full steam ahead
    Any additional comments?
One of the things I struggle with when reading multiple books by the same author is a presumed assumption that there will be connections between releases. So I went into Resolution with the hopes that I'd be whisked right back into the Alaskan Undead story and unravel in a linear fashion.
I feared it would be a reluctant read once I realized this was a mix between the original characters a fresh set of tales of the outbreak. But after a short time, I was too engrossed in the vignettes to give it much thought. There's something intriguing in the timeline, as it jumps the track of events between initial outbreak of new characters and still gives glimpses into existing ones.
One of the more successful stories for me is the tale of a cabbie whose fare was bitten prior to hailing the cab. It's tense and fast paced and provides a great amount of depth in characterization.
Another fun perspective was that of couple that met on an online dating site.
"She could guarantee an Alaskan adventure that he wouldn't forget."
    Understatement of the decade!
It took me a while to realize there was indeed a connected story to be told, and that the seemingly disjointed vignettes in the beginning were to tie into a bigger story. And after about 20%, the pieces fell into place and I got into rhythm with the story.
I enjoyed the read, but in prefer the format of the first two books.

Great books- but know it was never finished.
I absolutely loved this book and its 3 sequels. Good, gritty post apocalyptic alien invasion storyline. Interesting and tormented main character. Not much to not like. In the later books the author goes to some dark places and touches on subjects you may wish he would have avoided - but everything feels true to the character and the world the author has created.
You need to know one thing before buying : book 4 ends with an extreme cliffhanger... and fans have been waiting since the early 1990's for a resolution. Mr. Gerrold still says he's working on it - but the fairly imminent release of book 5 has been promised repeatedly, and for about 20 years. The series is supposed to end with a total of 7 books - but again after book 4 there has been nothing.
I still highly recommend the series - but only start it if you can accept the story as unfinished and sadly very likely to remain so.
    Great Courses, NOT!!
    GOOD WORRING IS NEVER WASTED
As mentioned by another reviewer this is written in a 60ish style. Early on we have several lectures by a guy who thinks he is God's gift to intelligence. The lectures are very political, long and boring. He spends quite a bit of time telling his students how mean and tough he is. I find that real tough guys don't have to announce there toughness. When he asks a student a question, you know whatever the answer is, it will be wrong. The student will also be humiliated in the process, such as the girl he calls a whore. A reviewer mentions that this is straight out of Heinlein's Starship Troopers Universe. In the hard back copy, he acknowledges Robert and Ginny Heinlein among others.
Our hero, as mentioned by another reviewer , is stupid. He survives because of his stupidness.
I will not continue this series. When Harlie was One, is Gerrold's most famous novel. That one I will try.
20 years and no book 5, be warned
Yes this is an alien invasion post apocalyptic book. However, its not about flying saucers and heat rays. The invader is an alien Eco-system. The concept is know as the Panspermia Theory. So it's less about fighting greys with lasers and more about fighting a deadly invasive ecology. Product of alien evolution or bio engineered? /shrug Join the fun and listen to the book.
The part of the book that might turn some of you off as was mentioned by other reviewers is a main character who is really smart but is also an annoying putz. I don't mind that so much; not all my heroes need be flawless demi gods. And he also goes into some weird interpersonal adventures over the 4 books that can be cringe worthy for some listeners. Being an open-minded sort helps.
Also, in Jim's America, the government is modeled straight out of Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers. It's an idealized version of Fascism. Individual wants come second to the "states" needs all in the name of efficiency and proper resource allocation.

Okay, You've made it to book 3...
    Now be cautioned. Be forewarned.
    Ready?
There is no book 4. This story ends in a cliffhanger. I Wikipedia'd it the day I finished and saw that there was no release date or status update since 2005. And here's the kicker, the author had a stroke the week before. I wish him the best in his recovery, hopefully he can crank out a finale for the series.
Had I known this was an incomplete story with no payoff, I can't say I would've invested in all three books. The third does improve over the second, although I really enjoyed the first because it remained easiest to follow.
It's a good series, not great. It is what it is.
    Great story, well read!
I've loved this story for many years, and the narrator brings it to life! Hoping for the next book in the series, Dr. Pournelle!
