    Title: Hystopia
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: David Means
    Narrator: Nicholas Techosky
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 50 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-09-16
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 15 votes
    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
At the bitter end of the 1960s, after surviving multiple assassination attempts, President John F. Kennedy is entering his third term in office. The Vietnam War rages on, and the president has created a vast federal agency, the Psych Corps, dedicated to maintaining the nation's mental hygiene by any means necessary. Soldiers returning from the war have their battlefield traumas "enfolded" - wiped from their memories through drugs and therapy - while veterans too damaged to be enfolded roam at will in Michigan, evading the government and reenacting atrocities on civilians.
This destabilized version of American history is the vision of 22-year-old Eugene Allen, who has returned from Vietnam to write the book-within-a-book at the center of Hystopia. In conversation with some of the greatest war narratives, from Homer's Iliad to the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter", David Means channels the voice of Allen, the young veteran out to write a novel that can bring honor to those he fought with in Vietnam while also capturing the tragic history of his own family.
The critic James Wood has written that Means' language "offers an exquisitely precise and sensuous register of an often crazy American reality". In Hystopia, his highly anticipated first novel, David Means brings his full talent to bear on the crazy reality of trauma, both national and personal. Outlandish and tender, funny and violent, timely and historical, Hystopia invites us to consider whether our traumas can ever be truly overcome. The answers it offers are wildly inventive, deeply rooted in its characters, and wrung from the author's own heart.

Then we came to the end
This is one of those books that can only be fully appreciated by getting to the end. Its complex! I was so confused in the beginning and distracted by the fact that it starts out with an Editors Note which states that certain historical facts have been twisted to fit the fictive universe, and then goes on to say that one of those facts is that JFK had 7 attempts on his life, and the Genuine Assassination happened in September in Illinois. Thats not a spoiler, its like the first page. The point of this comment is that the beginning takes concentration and I dont recommend this on audio, which is what I did. The audio was well done, but I had to rewind so many times I can recite parts by memory.
This is a SUPER creative look at the Vietnam War, and trauma in general. The characters were kind of hard to distinguish one from the other. That may have been partly the audio, but I dont think so. Im a bit in awe of the sophistication of this book, and absolutely see why it is nominated for the Man Booker prize. For me, however, I appreciated it far more than I enjoyed it. Its not something I would have read if not for the nomination, and Im glad I did. In fact, now that its done I feel like I should go back and read it to catch what I missed. (I felt much the same with last years winner A Brief History of Seven Killings.)

    Great fun.
These books are great for a light and humorous read. Very consistent performance. Great book.
it makes a long ride just a little bit shorter.

I'm just going to have a nother slice of a woven story that is more than what the reader expected
    New trouble around each corner
Enjoyed each story, the characters, adventures, mayhem and trying to guess how they would get out of trouble each time. Enjoy the world constructed around them.
    A disappointment
This did not live up to the first in the series. It did not have a personal feel or a feel good story like the others.
More great stores from the Mobius
loved the first collection and loved this one as well. I am looking for more

    Concerned!
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
If the author remembered what he previously wrote, and the character interactions actually made sense and weren't irrational and irritating.
What do you think your next listen will be?
In ashes born by Nathan Lowell I like his previous series.
Would you be willing to try another one of Kirby Heybornes performances?
His performance was fine, the material was bad!
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Anger and disappointment. The supporting characters were enraging and petty.
    Any additional comments?
If the author could remember his plot and previous scenes; it would be much obliged!

    idiot for hire
it has a great concept for a story. but it's hard to relate to the main character because he is just so dumb. it was written with zero common sense. he argues with every decision smarter people make then needs it explained 17 times before he concedes.

    Publisher: Podium Publishing
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 47 votes
    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The Alpha Plague series is a postapocalyptic action thriller.
    Book 1:
Rhys is an average guy who works an average job in Summit City - a purpose-built government complex on the outskirts of London. The Alpha Tower stands in the center of the city. An enigma, nobody knows what happens behind its dark glass.
Rhys is about to find out.
At ground zero, and with chaos spilling out into the street, Rhys has the slightest of head starts. If he can remain ahead of the pandemonium, then maybe he can get to his loved ones before the plague does.
    Book 2:
Equipped with nothing but a baseball bat and his wits, Rhys enters Summit City for a second time. His son wants his mummy, and Rhys is the only one who can save her. If he can get to the Alpha Tower, he can release the shutters on all of the buildings in the city. Maybe then he can get his ex-wife and best friend out of there.
But opening the shutters will release chaos into the already wild streets.
The only advantage Rhys has over the thousands of other people who will be fighting for their lives is that he understands what he's up against. Hopefully that knowledge will be the difference between life and death.
To make matters worse, an order to incinerate the city has been switched on. In five hours' time, the complex will burn to a crisp.
To give his son what he needs, Rhys has to risk everything. But there is no stronger love in his life than that which he feels for his boy.
One final deep breath, and Rhys reenters hell.
    Book 3:
After having found and successfully rescued his ex-wife from the diseased Summit City, Rhys drags himself to where he should be meeting his son and discovers he isn't there.
Armed with nothing but hope, Rhys and his ex-wife set off on what they believe to be their boy's trail. With just enough breadcrumbs to keep them going, they follow the path of their son and his protector in a race against both the spread of the Alpha Plague and a crazed psychopath hell-bent on their destruction.

    Not what I thought
If a story of a father who would run into a zombie infected city for his ex-wife who hates him is the type of zombie novel you enjoy, then this book is for you. The narrator is great but the overall quality of the book was absolutely not for me.
    Fantastic!
I took a chance on this even though it had a low number of reviews. I am so glad I did! I blazed through all 5 available books in this series and I really hope there will be more. The story is fantastic, and the characters are flawed and wonderful. And the narration is **masterful**. Looking forward to book 6!!
    OK for high school
    Any additional comments?
I was hopeful based on reviews that this book would be of interest. Two hours in and I just had to walk away. The story was there, a zombie apocalypse set in the future. It was the sophomoric interactions with women, the extended descriptions of parking a car and other parts that seem more designed to take up space than to enhance the story that finally convinced me that the dialogue would just continue to aggravate me.
    Kinda cheesy
Kinda sappy thought it was entertaining
    Story was predictable but funnyish
Not on the top of my zombie books
A whole lot of annoying whining
I'm a big fan of zombie apocalypse stories but this one was just painful to listen to. The performance was fine but the characters stunk. There wasn't much along the lines of survival skills...

    Title: Rise of the Dead
    Author: Jeremy Dyson
    Narrator: John R. Crosthwaite
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-10-16
    Publisher: Jeremy Dyson
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 207 votes
    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Rise of the Dead is a zombie novel with a lot of guts that aims for the brain, blending literary fiction with post-apocalyptic thrills.
Blake was never one for taking chances. He lived in a world of formulas and equations. A statistician in a controlled society where everything had become predictably mundane. That world disappeared the day the dead got up and began attacking the living.
Now, the end is here. Blake finds himself fighting for his life in a world that is rapidly spiraling out of control. He struggles to keep himself alive and must risk everything to find his family.
Along the way, Blake finds himself thrust among other unlikely survivors. Together they must adapt to the realities of the undead world, or join the legion of zombies. The characters must overcome their conditioned human apathy and come together if they have any chance of survival.
Rise of the Dead chronicles the first moments of the zombie apocalypse. While the story is a fast-paced thrill ride through an ever-growing zombie horde, the novel aims to draw upon familiar themes as those found in the Romero classic films.
    Members Reviews:
Excellent addition to the zombie genre!
    Any additional comments?
I loved it! As a lot of you zombie fans know, most new zombie books fall flat.....very very flat. This one though, was really good. I hated to see it end and am hoping this is the first in a series. The ending does have closure, which is satisfying, but a second book can easily pick up where this one ends.
    The narrator was great!
I have nothing bad to say about this book. I hope there there's more to come of this story.
    Great Read/Listen
Where does Rise of the Dead rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I would have to say this book is in my top 5 books.
What other book might you compare Rise of the Dead to and why?
I would put this book up with and above most zombie novels. It felt like the author took his time with the story. It wasn't rushed, and it shows. This gave me time to absorb what was taking place, and really enjoy what I was listening to. I've found some zombie apocalypse books to move through time too quickly and not really letting the listener/reader really get the feel of what's taking place. This book was just the opposite.
What about John R. Crosthwaites performance did you like?
I really enjoyed John R. Crosthwaite's voice. His was very smooth, and enjoyable to listen to. He did a good job altering his voice so that the listener had no trouble identifying the characters in the book. At the same time he didn't over do it. His voice was just right.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I did listen to quite a number of hours in one sitting, and it was great. When I wasn't listening to the book I often found myself thinking about the characters, and the book and I really felt the urge to turn it back on so I could continue listening.
    Any additional comments?
I felt that there were a few times where the pause between chapters was a little too long. At first I thought it was my device, but then the story started again. When this happened a second time, I realized it was in the recording and not my device. Other than that I loved the book, and can't wait for more.
On a final note, as I've seen other people post on their reviews: I did receive a free download for this book in exchange for the review.

    Awesome!
This is a great series that shows the aftereffects of an EMP, America coming under attack, & the incredible will & patriotism of true Americans, willing to fight for their country. God help us all if this ever became a reality. This series will make you appreciate America, your America, oh so much more.
    AMAZINGLY AWESOME!
First I am a single mom I work for a living, with that said here goes. This by far has been one of THE best series of books I've read this far. I have LITERALLY laughed out loud, cheered out loud and cries ALOT. The characters I fell in love with. The story is frighteningly believable and all the history!!' WOW! This series I will read again and again!
    still entertaining
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, but it wouldnt be my first recommendation. I found this series after reading most other very popular EMP scenario stories.
What other book might you compare Last Stand: Turning the Tide to and why?
I would compare this series to the Devil Dog series. While each series is vastly different, they both use an EMP scenario as the primary plot and each book in their respective series has between 5 and 6 hours narration time - whatever that equates to for printed versions. Each book also contains a former military character as its primary character.
What about Kevin Stillwells performance did you like?
    Consistent.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
There were some touching moments in the series... moments that were very you could envision nearly every Hollywood movie portrayal of victory when Allied troops would celebrate.
    Any additional comments?
This series was fairly interesting. While it was written with the "EMP" scenario in mind, it took a different route of a story that was a bit refreshing. The primary character seems to be a military history nut that greatly helps in with the tactical strategic angles in the story. The ending of this book is written to give a plausible conclusion to this particular story, but it could also be continued. Each of the books in this series are about half as long as most other book in the EMP genre, but it still covers good ground. This series is not my favorite series, probably not one that I will re-listen to, but it was still work the time, not disappointed nor overjoyed with the series either.
    great series
terrific characters and hope the author continues these books for years to come. Many arcs in the book to roll up...
    Good read..
I enjoyed all the books in the series. However the ending is wrapped up very quickly.

Better than the first book.I nteresting prepper tips without forcing it down your throat.
I like this better than the first book. Plausible story (yes, I really said that).
Somewhat predictable. And having Diane try to seduce the Chairman was very TV drama, like something you would see on Revolutions. And the bad guy always has to stop to explain himself without just pulling the trigger and shooting Diane or John dead. Had to suspend disbelief in taht situation.
Interesting, fast read. Interesting prepper tips without being overbearing or forcing it down your throat.
    ~~Tragedy/Torture/Triumph~~
This is an excellent continuation of book one and this one does start with tragedy. And, we know John Mack well enough by now to know that he is not going to let tragedy affect him for long.
The reader will once again be privy to some excellent survival tips. Some of them included are the building of an A frame shelter, edible plants and also which leaves are the best for TP!
As the book progresses, the action intensifies and some torture occurs. The ending of this one, however, does offer hope for tomorrow with triumph.
I thought the flashbacks to John's time in Iraq were most insightful and help the reader understand his personality in much more detail.
All in all, an action packed book with outstanding character development and containing just the right amount of evil and evil-doers.
Once again, well done to this author for a book with so few errors. It is so nice to be able to concentrate on the story being told instead of gritting your teeth and cringing when an error is found.
    Most highly recommended.
Watch closely and learn from their mistakes
Interesting sequel to the first book. Watch closely and learn from their mistakes! Yeah, things were still bad, but you'll notice that even with the conditions the way they were, they were starting to get a little too "comfortable" and less "watchful" --- and it cost them. One of the terms that comes up in this book is "fifth column" --- if you're not familiar with that term, you really should look it up and give it some thought. This book doesn't move as fast as the first one, but it's still worth your time to read --- if nothing else, just to make you stop and think! I gave it 5 stars, not because it's that good, but because it's that much worth reading.
    Great books
Very good book. This is book two in the last stand series and is as good as the first one. There is a lot to be taken from these books on surviving a post emp apocalypse.
