    Publisher's Summary:
Ten years have passed since Admiral Kolhammer's 21st-century battlefleet was dragged into a wormhole and thrown across oceans of time, emerging with disastrous consequences and shattering the history of the Second World War.
Hitler and the Nazis have fallen, but Stalin rules half of Europe and Asia. The great Soviet engines of state power turn and burn to 'set history right'. Not just of the war, but of all future time.
In Rome with his lover, Julia Duffy, an older, mellower Prince Harry is drawn into Stalin's plans when a simple game of spies goes horribly wrong. Underneath the eternal city, former Spetsnaz officer Pavel Ivanov fights a running battle with the NKVD's executioner in chief as Stalin's minions fight to preserve the secret of a weapon that could destroy the West with one fearsome blow.
Moving from Rome to Paris to Cairo, Harry and the uptimers must fight a shadow war against the communist superstate and the suspicion and prejudices of their forebears. They can save the world, but the world does not want saving by the likes of them.
"A weapons-grade military techno-thriller.... It's like a Clive Cussler novel fell into a transporter beam with a Stephen Ambrose history, and they came out all fused together." (Time magazine, on the original Axis of Time series)
    Critic Reviews:
"Birmingham sets new standards in alternate history, time travel, and sheer dancing-on-the-edge-of-the lava gonzo inventiveness. Solid and wild at the same time." (S. M. Stirling, author of
    Dies the Fire)

Great return to world. More strategy & K, please!
I loved being back in this world, and was fascinated to learn more about the divergences and strategic differences from the history of the 21st Century folk. We get to see some of how they have adjusted to being in their new time, but I would have liked even more getting more of that. The viewpoints we mostly get here, probably from the structure of the novellas, focuses the story really thought.
I would have loved to get more of the strategic viewpoints--vantage points that would have given more of a view of the sweep of the new, developing history. I do believe that that wasn't *super* common in the preceding series, either, but I have the impression that it was more prevalent. My favorite characters and viewpoints from the other series were Admiral Kohlhammer and Lonesome Jones--probably in part, because they had the more strategic views of things, and, in Kohlhammer's case in particular, we got to see the efforts, strategies, and worldview of the uptimers as they sought to shape their new time into their mold and with the advantage of their parallel-history hindsight.
That said, I'm definitely in for the next chapters in this history.
    Slow to start, but ok.
While this book is slow to start unlike his previous two books in the axis of time series. It's still a worthwhile listen. While I didn't love it, and I'll admit, bored until the last 2 1/2 hours of the novel it a good setup for another installment.
Lets just hope it's not going to take forever to write like this one.

Rollicking Good Fun, part of the Paratime Series
    H. Beam Piper wasn't afraid to tackle tough questions about politics and religion, or, capitalism versus socialism, or slavery versus paid labor, as long as he could tell a story. One thing about Piper's Paratime series, there are no cheap outs. You don't have any lazy fly balls drifting into the outfield, no, when Piper tells a story, he lets it rip. Everything is hard ball. Turn a page and there is a corporate entity using religion to control the political situation of a primitive country. Turn another and there is the exploitation of natural resources with no benefit to the people that own them. Flip yet another and there is a corporate takeover using false gods, religion, even biological terrorism. It's capitalism run wild in an alternate world.
H Beam Piper's worlds of Paratime take us to many destinations, all of them logical extensions of past history, if certain things hadn't quite gone as they did. I won't bother to explain Paratime, heck, I can't figure the logic out myself. I just enjoy reading the stories.

Get me to the church on (para)time
Paratime Police officer Verken Vall is at it again. H. Beam Piperâs science fiction novella Temple Trouble was originally published in the April 1951 issue of the pulp magazine Astounding Science Fiction. In this fourth installment of the Paratime series, Vall is once again tasked with maintaining order and keeping the peace in one of the myriad alternate timelines that exist in a different space-time reality than our own. On many of these parallel timelines, in the Fourth Level Proto-Aryan Sector, there exists a pre-mechanical civilization that worships a six-armed god named Yat-Zar. The same bureaucracy that governs the Paratime Police has co-opted this god for their own ends and installed their transtemporal agents as priests within his temples. They use this religious subterfuge to conceal the fact that they are mining these worldsâ uranium and transporting it back to their own timeline. In Piperâs Paratime universe, there are all sorts of rules and regulations that restrict transtemporal travelers from messing with other timelines, but apparently raping other civilizations of their resources is OK as long as one can go about it undetected. On one particular timeline, however, a political coup has overthrown the existing king in favor of a new ruler, who establishes a new god, Muz-Azin, in place of the convenient Yat-Zar. Some of the priests/miners are captured and sentenced to brutal torture and human sacrifice.

Pick one book and don't bother with the rest!
I am coming back to rate this book after listening to the entire series. Change the characters names and write the same story, then you can sell three books instead of one! The books are well written and the narration is good. However, I am disappointed that the story never evolved from the first book. It's the exact same thing with different names. I feel like I have been had buying the third book hoping the story would evolve, but it never did. My initial rating was 5 stars like most of the other reviews, but I feel like I need to warn people before they plunk down their money. Go read the reviews from the third book and you will see I'm not the only one!
    Ho Hum
I'm giving this book an overall three star because I feel like I am listening to the same story, different characters as the first two books in the series. Maybe these three stories in this series thus far are lead-ups to a story where all three Earth women join together and do something spectacular but I don't have the patience to listen any further books in the series. While I do find the narrator as an excellent in her trade, listening to the the drone's flat dialogue is about to drive me up a wall.
I am about to return this book because I can't find a reason to continue listening to this story.
If this was the first book I read in the series, I might have given it higher marks except I feel like the plot and the issues were essentially the same as the first two and my opinion of the series has soured.
    Repetitive Plot for Each Book
The audible performance with the multiple voices was entertaining. Unfortunately, the story became too predictable after the 3rd ship. I was hoping that the author would have taken the characters in a different direction. I kind of felt I read the same book 3 times.
    Same story, different girl
This story is indistinct from the previous two. It was enjoyable enough, however, there was no additional meat on that bone
Great Series in a Class (5) All It's Own!
Ah, bliss! The third book in this amazing series is just as good, if not better, than the first two. More aliens, more action, more romance, and definitely more of . . .

    Very Tedious!
When selecting Audible books, one of the first places I look is for anything Scott Brick has performed. So, when I saw a Zombie/Walking Dead offering done by Scott, I said, "How bad can it be?". Well, I thought this one was pretty bad. I almost stopped listening around the half-way point, but I had hope it would improve. Ummm.... NOPE!!
I guess I will have to be a bit more careful about selecting Audible purchases just because they are performed by Scott. Had anyone else performed this read, I certainly would have stopped a lot sooner. Maybe I am just "Zombied Out", but I would suggest waiting for a few more reviews before purchasing this book. I can't even imagine that this is book 1 of a series! Good gosh, what more can they say?
    Loved it
A zombie book that isn't a recycled story. How refreshing. Neither is is a mindless slasher piece. Interesting, tense and even funny at times. Can't wait till the next one hits audible.
    Kept me captivated
Normally, I will start a book to listen on my commute to work and anytime I am in the car. This one however I listened to after I got home.

    A binge-worthy series
I finished Book 7 and rolled right into Book 8. And it was well worth it. A lot of things I'd been waiting for were fulfilled, but we also got new characters to care about. Shelley Adina is a genius and Fiona Hardingham is perfect. Read them all! My biggest question is when will the next book be in audio?????
    Narrator brings it to life.
The book is captivating and the wonderful narrator brings it to life in a most entertaining way. I thoroughly enjoyed it as well as all the previous books in the series and look forward to being able to listen to the rest as well.
    Fantastic series
Would you consider the audio edition of A Gentleman of Means to be better than the print version?
    Didn't read the print version
    Any additional comments?
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series. Great adventures. Strong female characters.
    Highly recommend .

    DEGENERATES
I am not sure how this guy makes a living? This was my third and last try at his writing. He is not awful, he just is not interesting. He takes the most exciting topics and turns them into Meh. The not Zombies don't even eat people, why would you take away the most horrifying thing about zombies? Well, they didn't through the first two hours, I called it quits after that.
    Good Start to a series
I enjoy other books by Bobby Adair. His Slow Burn series really kept me hooked. I can see this one doing the same. The audible rendition most times were good however there were a few where the narrative lacked and seemed a bit monotone. I would still recommend and will listen to it in the future.
    Wow, interesting viral horror...
Our hero, Christian, is a troubled - perhaps sociopathic - youth who must navigate a viral apocalypse. The author does a good job, but this book is short and leaves you wanting to know the characters better... unfortunately they die. The ending is deeply emotional and a bit disturbing, but powerful. The narrator does a good job, and gets better as the book goes on. I'm looking forward to hearing a sequel... and hoping for a prequel.
I wish it had been longer!
This book was very well written. It captured my attention and kept it the end. I really wish it had gone on much longer. I'll definitely be looking for the next book in this series.
    Black Virus
What made the experience of listening to Black Virus the most enjoyable?
This book gripped my attention from the very beginning and I had to finish it in one sitting.
What did you like best about this story?
That youth had to find a way to survive.
Which character as performed by Tristan Morris was your favorite?
    Christian
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes

An awesome back story into the Dead Hunger series
This story is set in the world conjured up by Eric Shelman for his Dead Hunger series; but while it provides more insight into the world Dead Hunger occurs in, it also stands on its own. This chronicle follows the popular character of Tony Mallette's life as it was at the beginning of the outbreak. Thru Tony's eyes, we are able to experience first hand the symptoms sufferers present with before turning as well as watch how quickly good people can do good things together as well as seeing those who will abuse dreadful situations such as this. Tony isn't perfect, but he is definitely set on doing his best to help others as they all face the monsters; both the creatures as well as the humans set on hurting others.
I really enjoy how well the narrative flows via the telling of the story. Shelman is great at giving each character their own voice without going overboard like I have heard on some other audio books. I am finally able to 'read' in such a manner that I can still complete my chores, cook, garden, walk, and drive. The only problem I have is finding a stopping point as it is so very easy to become completely engrossed in the narrative. I look forward to listening to more of the Dead Hunger books as well as other titles narrated by Eric Shelman.
    Great job!
I have to admit, this was my very first audible book. I'm not a fan of them but after listening to this one, I may consider using audible more. Mr. Shelman did a great job. At first I couldn't figure out where the lead character was from, Boston or New York, but after a while I realized he was from New York. He did a great job with the other voices too. I really liked how, when he was "talking to the dispatcher", he made it sound like it was a telephone call. I would highly wrecking

    A utopian-like post-apocalyptic story
    3.5 out of 5 stars
I'm always curious to see how people in already forgotten parts of the map would survive after some sort of apocalypse. Endure gives me that chance with Chuck and his family. They live on the outskirts of Fairbanks, Alaska which has just been hit with some sort of nuclear bomb. Chuck and family must first figure out what happens and then figure out how to survive the bitter cold and sunless days after this attack.
Another book blogging friend of mine asked what I thought of Endure as I was reading it. My comment to her was that it felt tame. It was honestly one of the tamest post-apocalyptic books I've ever read. I wonder if Martelle was trying to envision the world where not everyone was out to get everyone else. Where the main character would face issues, but they were typical and normal survival issues (not ones where people are always attacking them for no reason).
Endure almost felt like a utopian-like post-apocalyptic book. It felt like Martelle was writing a "what if people got along?" type of story. Sure there was still violence and people couldn't hack it. But, overall, the book felt very hopeful.
Some of the reasons I scored it the way I did involve the total abrupt stop of an ending. I see "to be continued" type endings all the time. Especially in post-apocalyptic books. I'm used to them (they used to really bother me). But Endure just... ends. He was about to go out looking for answers and it was just over. I think that Martelle could have done a little better ending this so that the reader doesn't feel completely betrayed by the abruptness of it.
Another reason for the less than 4 score is that there were times when it felt really well thought out. The sentences went perfectly from one to another. The story just flowed like a story should. But there were parts that felt a little choppy. Like Martelle had an idea, but couldn't figure out how to work it in properly. Normally it doesn't warrant a comment, but I felt I needed to explain my 3.5 stars for a book in a series that I will be continuing.
The narration, done by Chris Abernathy was pretty well done.

When an alien race came to make Earth theirs, they brought with them a weapon we had no way to fight, a universe-altering force known as thelemity. It seemed nothing could stop it - until we discovered we could wield the power, too.
Five hundred years later, the Earth is locked in a grinding war of attrition. The talented few capable of bending thelemity to their will are trained in elite military academies, destined for the front lines. Those who refused to support the war have been exiled to the wilds of a ruined Earth.
But the enemy's tactics are changing, and Earth's defenders are about to discover this centuries-old war has only just begun. As a terrible new onslaught looms, heroes will rise from unlikely quarters and fight back.

Fantastic detailed characters. Imaginative unique story. Artfully narrated. Thoughtful. Emotional. Worth every damn cent. Bravo.
    Awesome performances and great story
The story is very fluid and you really get a good sense of the struggles and emotions of the characters. As a huge fan of science fiction, the mixture of magic and technology really impressed me, and the detail through which it is explained really drew me in and I would listen to the same part a few times so I could really grasp the concept myself. The performances of the narrarators are really well done, none really standing out over the others, although my favorite was probably kisabelle(not sure of the spelling)
    Really Tuff Read/Listen
Tedious , like doing an all night drive on a poker straight interstate with only the drone of the engine to listen to. There are some nice bits where the characters are actually doing something action wise, but they were just too few and Far between to keep my interest. I just felt there could have been a much shorter version to the descriptive narratives
    Truly refreshing
I've been waiting for one of these types of books to come along. Most characters well performed and a interesting universe built by the writer. I loved the balance between typical ingredients such as love and war but also technical detail and vivid imagination. Looking forward to hear the rest of this saga.
    Trys to hard
Overall I enjoyed the concept but found the world created difficult to follow in audio book format as you cant reread easily if you miss something.
