    Title: Looking Backward: 2000-1887
    Author: Edward Bellamy
    Narrator: Caroline Collins
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 45 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-24-17
    Publisher: Audioliterature
    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
"Looking Backward" is a futuristic novel by Edward Bellamy. It tells the story of Julian West, a young American, who, towards the end of the 19th century, falls into a deep, hypnosis-induced sleep and wakes up one hundred and thirteen years later. He finds himself in the same location (Boston, Massachusetts), but in a totally changed world: it is the year 2000 and, while he was sleeping, the United States have been transformed into a socialist utopia.
The remainder of the story lines out Bellamy's thoughts about improving the future. The major themes include problems associated with capitalism, a proposed socialist solution of a nationalization of all industry, the use of an "industrial army" to organize production and distribution, as well as how to ensure free cultural production under such conditions.
Edward Bellamy (1850-1898) was an American author and socialist, most famous for his utopian novel, "Looking Backward".

    Time travel reversed
I enjoy reading stories of time travel. This book is one of the most mind stretching I have come across since it has the main character going forward in time and the author dreaming of a world 100 years in the future.
The writing is from the 1800 s and so has to be read and thought about. It is a true story of what the world was like in the late 1800 s from the point of view of someone living then. He has a vision of utopia in the year 2000 that we can hold and compare to where we actually developed. I am not sure that I would like living in his world. But then again, I am not happy with all I see in the modern world.
This is not a book to be read in one sitting but should be savored in small chunks rather than devoured. I truly enjoyed the opportunity to experience this classic book.
I actually can say, this, on my second read, was a life changing book.
Bellamy's utopia is a highly regimented society without the hand of Big Brother. How it came about is utterly unbelievable. But don't let that stop you from reading it. If you put yourself into this story, you'll spend time in a world where everyone earns the same because pay is based on what society as a whole produced, divided by the number of its members, where everyone earns the same because pay is based on human worth. It's an astonishing concept if you let it sink in. Bellamy successfully foils the question of "then why work harder than the next guy" with a counter question that draws on the best in human kind: Why do our best sacrifice their very lives for others? Think first responders or those who fight for to preserve our freedoms, think 9/11 firefighters or the men who stormed Normandy. Shouldn't captains of industry be drawn from the same pool of self-sacrifice? I actually can say, this, on my second read, was a life changing book.
    Interesting Historical SF
This was an interesting and different sort of futuristic story. It was interesting to see what they thought would constitute an improvement. The ending threw me for a loop, until it came back around to what I was expecting.

It could have been a great book !
A novel of the fifties. The starting of the book is good enough to stand the passing of time. A planet where all criminals from Earth are sent, without their memory of their life on Earth, develops as a criminally bent society, where evil is worshippped, the way to reach a high status is to kill other Citizens. Also the weather is hellish, as it sometimes happens.
If you break the law, you suffer the consequences, but it is still within this hellish planet.
Will Barent does not remember well why he was sent there, he knows that he is a murderer, but he does not like to kill.
And there is strange girl who helps him from the very first day he lands.
The end of the book is not worth much, it could have been a great book, it becomes a good book.
A connection could be made to Dune, where the Emperor's guards, the Sardaukar were raised on a prison planet, and became the greatest warrior of the Universe, before the Fremen came to the Universe. Could it be that Herbert remembered this book ?
A 1950s Era Projection of the Future of Social Conformity
A man wakes up in a hospital with no memory, but it isn't a hospital. It's a prison ship taking him on an alien planet named Omega. When he is marched out of the ship with a group of other amnesiacs, they are informed that they are all criminals who have been exiled. They are told that their minds have been wiped of all information of their previous life on Earth for the safety of Earth. They are told their crimes and their names but nothing else. The man finds out that his name is Will Barrent and that he is a murderer.
Barrent and his cohort are then dumped into a society where evil is good and individuals advance in status by murder. Barrent advances quite successfully by his reflexes, intelligence and good fortune, rather than by any innate viciousness or sociopathy. He is helped at key times by a mysterious woman, who doesn't exist in the story as anything more than a plot device.
Eventually Barrent gets to the pinnacle of Omega society and discovers that its internal contradictions are about to rip it apart. He fortuitously falls in with the Omegan non-criminal underground and is smuggled back to Earth on a returning prison ship.
Because of the mindwipe, Omegans do not remember anything about Earth, although they have conjectures about a fierce police state ruled through informers. What Barrent finds, however, is a world of unthinking conformity. There is no police and there is no crime. There are no local or regional differences.

    Absolutely stunning.
It's easily the best audio drama I've listened to. A great, compelling story that surrounds a novel idea, yet starkly distinct from a lot of its peers in the Heresy series by being unashamedly politics focused. Beyond the story, the production values and acting in it are excellent - alien and chilling, yet fiercely passionate. Even has a great wee musical score behind it too.

    Publisher's Summary:
In a world stripped bare of digital images and promotainment, unveiled with the audiovisual overlay of the ImmaNet, in an exposed world, a naked world, Amon Kenzaki awakens, lost and alone. He must now travel deep into the District of Dreams in search of Rashana Birla, the one person that might help him unravel the mystery of jubilee. But deprived of the apps and informational tools he's depended on his entire life, traversing the largest bankdeath camp on Earth is no easy task.
Inside an ephemeral labyrinth of slowly-dissolving disposable skyscrapers clogged to the limit with the bankdead masses, Amon soon finds himself face to face with two dangerous groups: a cult called the Opportunity Scientists, who preach bizarre superstitions about economic salvation, and a supposedly humanitarian organization called the Philanthropy Syndicate, whose mandate of serving the poor conceals rapacious motives.
Amon takes refuge in Xenocryst, a community that genuinely strives to improve conditions in the camps, where he begins to work towards its cause and reconciles himself to his newfound poverty. But when political forces threaten the community's existence and the lives of its members, he is forced to team up with a vending-machine designer, an Olympic runner, a fertility researcher, a corporate tycoon, and many others to expose the heinous secret festering at the heart of the action-transaction market he once served.
In book two of the Jubilee Cycle, Eli K. P. William delves beneath the surface of his cyber-dystopian Tokyo to unearth the fate of outcasts trapped in its depths and shine a light on the financial obstacles blocking one individual's efforts to help them.

Very good but also challenging book.
If you read a lot of sci-fi hopefully you have ended up here. This is one of the 1% of sci-fi books I have read that has really challenged me. The concepts are complex but we'll explained. This is a book in a series in a very different world then any sci-fi I have read before. This is the most expensive Kindle book I have purchased, but was worth the price. The connection with the first book is very strong, the author must have planned out much of this book before writing the first. It would be very hard to understand this book without reading the first. The mood is very dark overall, with many surprising moments of joy. I very much look forward to the final book. Very satisfying continuation of the first book.

Starts a bit slow but worth it.
The story starts out a bit slow but it is worth the listen. It does a nice job of showing just how driven and ruthless the Dark Angels can be in their hunt for the Fallen. If you are a fan of the Space Marines in the Warhammer 40K universe I would say that this one should be in your collection..

A Very Interesting and Different Experience
I found this story quite unique. I thought the narration was wonderfully done and the story was perfectly paced. Some may say the back and forward between time periods was difficult but for me it gave the information just when it was needed and in fact added to the story. Well done Mr Kahle, I look forward to a sequel.

    An enjoyable addition
An overall good story that doesn't quite reach the excellence of some of the other audio dramas. The human element and enemy are well done while some of the Salamanders suffer to get past two-dimensional, if you have read the other books in the series it helps to mitigate this and is overall a fine addition to any fan of the Salamanders.
    Smolders then fizzles.
Black Library has started to get into the Audio Book realm as of late. Their outlook is more audio drama then a reading of an other wise in print book. Very well done as the stories are around 90 minute productions. Fireborn is well crafted but doesn't live up to Raven Flight or the others. Still worth having in the collection.

    Judge Anderson: Year One
Judge Anderson: Year One by Alec Worley is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in early June.
A novella made up of short stories (about a deadly dating site called Meet Market that organizes deadly meetups, an anti-Judge group known as the Social Justice Commandos that plant a series of bombs among their Psych-Block, and a plotline with Westworld/Hills Have Eyes connotations), rather than the solo comicbook I expected, but it was still amply good.
