    Fortitude
I couldn't wait for this book after falling in love with The Language of Flowers. Comparatively, Wings didn't punch me in the gut like Flowers did, however, on its own it was a good story, great characters and a very satisfying read. Letty was unlikeable in the beginning but her character grew as her backbone grew. By the end of the story she proves to be a champion. Vanessa Diffenbaugh's gift is to give us characters with tremendous flaws and a story that transforms them before our very eyes. Well done!
    I loved this book
I loved this book! It was the story of so many people, their struggles, their tests of strength. The children in the book reminded me of my own when they were young, of when I was a single parent, when I had to make choices and hoped they were the right ones. About 1/4 of the way thru the book I realized why it had it's title.
The research the writer did was terrific. Carry on, I will be waiting for your next book.
Stayed up till 5 am to finish....Thanks again.
    Great read
I found this book phenomenalinally written. The character development was outstanding. I did not want to put this book down once I started. I didn't want it to end. I still want more. Do yourself a favor and give this author a chance. She will earn your respect.
    Good read
This is new author for me, but I found her writing style to be seasoned and development of her characters were strong. She addressed a lot of social issues: poverty, immigration, alcohol abuse, teen pregnancy, and single parenting but there was always hope and the desire to survive present. Her story was believable and the reader was drawn in quickly. I hope there is a sequel.
    Could have been good but....
A decent read about children of Mexican immigrants who are law abiding and hard working. Romanticized DACA that it should somehow make illegal immigrants here in America acceptable when they are still illegal. No mention made of trying to take steps to become a legal US citizen, that part was very disappointing. DACA is not the answer to undocumented, illegal immigrants in our country. They become entitled to US resources that are not rightfully theirs, health care and education, to name only two.

    Publisher's Summary:
Sebastian von Eschburg, scion of a wealthy, self-destructive family, survived his disastrous childhood to become a celebrated if controversial artist. He casts a provocative shadow over the Berlin scene; his disturbing photographs and installations show that truth and reality are two distinct things.
When Sebastian is accused of murdering a young woman and the police investigation takes a sinister turn, seasoned lawyer Konrad Biegler agrees to represent him - and hopes to help himself in the process.
But Biegler soon learns that nothing about the case - or the suspect - is what it appears.
The new thriller from the acclaimed author of The Collini Case, The Girl Who Wasn't There is dark, ingenious and irresistibly gripping.
    Critic Reviews:
"Written in a beautifully understated style that matches his protagonists' detached and rather abstract view of life.... It's an examination of the disconnection between truth and reality that is tantalising and disturbing in equal measure." (Laura Wilson, Guardian)
"Ferdinand von Schirach is one of Europe's most celebrated crime authors.... Well worth reading.... This is a sophisticated novel about a man whose emotional detachment is as chilly as it is destructive." (Joan Smith, Sunday Times)
"Ferdinand von Schirach's prose is elegant and unemotional...gripping and the story is intriguing and often disturbing." (Marcel Berlins, The Times)
"This is an effective riddle of a novel. Details accumulate, tensions build and misdirection abounds, while Anthea Bell's crisp translation accentuates von Schirach's cool, pointillist prose.... Perhaps the only secure verdict the novel delivers is that its author is one of the most distinctive voices in European fiction." (Daily Telegraph)

Christmas Karma is author Gerald Everett Jones' homage to Anne Tyler, whom he regards as his literary mother. It's about the travails of a dysfunctional family around the holidays, narrated by an angel who has a wicked sense of humor. Main character Willa Nawicki is bewildered by a series of curious karmic events that literally ring her doorbell during the frantic season, awakening years-old resentments and stimulating ever-more-intense personal confrontations. These bizarre visitations include a grizzled old man claiming to be her father, who has been missing for some 30 years but now says the title to the family home is in his name - and now he wants the place back. As the angel observes, "The surest way to invoke the laughter of the universe is to make plans, particularly devious ones."

    Christmas Karma
    By Gerald Everett Jones
    Narrated by Aundrea Mitchell
This was an odd story, due only in part to a glitch that mis-ordered the chapters and some unusual pronunciations by the narrator (mack-a-bray for macabre, as an example).
It was full of unexpected twists and turns...maybe a bit too much. It was simultaneously amusing and sad to watch these characters bumble through the holiday season and the odd set of circumstances they found themselves in.
If you'd like to check this one out for yourself, I'd recommend going with the print/Kindle version.

I have to say this dysfunctional quirky family travels an interesting road through the holidays and then some. The characters each have a personality that will make you laugh, cry or maybe just scratch your head and say "duh?" It was a fun little novel.
A Cute Story, Somewhat Hard to Follow
"Christmas Karma' was a cute story. I liked the premise and the characters. The story, in combination with the narration was hard for me to follow though. Aundrea Mitchell has a nice voice but I felt that her voice inflections were off to the point of being distracting. It's just a matter of adjustment. Otherwise, the story itself was great.

    Christmas Karma
I found it some what amusing ,but I believe that Aundrea Mitchells halting narration distracted me from the story. The storyline is as follows.A semi happy couple Norm and Willa, live in a modest ,paid for house with the wifes mother. When the mother Liz dies,Her husband, that abandoned the family years ago returns to tell them that he still owns the house. There are other stories going on besides these and it is a bit of fun figuring things out.

A Terrific Short Story About War and Walls
"Outside the Walls" was a terrific yet bittersweet story about war and walls. I think Alexandra Butcher and Diana Wicker did a nice job writing this and hope they continue. I loved the protagonist Duchess Eleanor and while her husband was away at war she tried to help others. Havenforth was a wonderful setting and overall, I really enjoyed this book.
Melanie Fraser was THE perfect narrator for this story. I loved her soft voice with spot on inflections. She made the story complete. I hope to hear more from her in the future. She definitely goes on my favorite reader list.

A Tale of Love and Compassion!
    Any additional comments?
This short story is not only one of compassion, but one that teaches us the importance of helping those in need. The young duchess wanted to help the many refugees outside the walls who were wounded and hungry, but she soon found a surprise she never expected. A surprise that both shocked her and took breath away! What a wonderful ending to this story!!!
I enjoyed listening to the narrator and I was soon taken into a new world by her enchanting voice. Well done, Melanie Fraser!
So much packed into an hour!
This was a great quick listen. I especially loved it for the strong female lead character of Eleanor. Without her persistence and skill, those outside the wall would have definitely perished.
This story is during times of war. Eleanor, Duchess of Haversham, is furious that the Council, who rules her city has shut it's doors to the refugees of the war. She and her cousin Lynette, make their way out beyond the walls with provisions to help those in need. While on her quest, she sees horrible things, trying to help as many as she can. Lynette comes upon a soldier, who in turns asks her to help another. The other turns out to be someone of importance(not wanting to have too much of a spoiler).
The results of their quest outside the walls is able to bring peace. This short story was both devastating and happy. The writing is very descriptive and you can picture all that they see.
Melanie Frasier narrates this novella. As usual, she brings a full on cast with her variety of voices making the story a wonderful listen.
    Nice Short Listen
This is an okay short listen. It is a tale of war and refuges. There is also a surprise in the tale.
The narration is nicely done and fits the primary character.
I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review via AudiobookBlast dot come
Great story, made even better by great narration
When I read the eBook version, I said of this book that, "This book is a beautifully written and very enjoyable read." I still feel that way about the story itself. Add to that the wonderful narration, and you have an excellent listening experience.

    Cute friends-to-lovers romantic comedy!
    3.5 Stars!
Sleepless in Manhattan, was a cute friends-to-lovers, rom-com. It was light-hearted and low on the angst scale.
Paige Walker spent her youth in and out of hospitals and under the watchful and protective eye of her family. As an adult, she was determined to prove she was capable of taking care of herself. She'd had one love, and that was her brother's best friend, Jake Romano.
Jake Romano was a highly successful businessman. An all-around nice guy, he was charming, protective and funny. He caused women to swoon and hearts to flutter. But his past taught him love wasn't forever.
I had a small issue with the length of the book. To me, there was too much internal dialogue and struggle, that at times, it felt like filler.
    BUT
There were many things I loved about this book (aside from the story and main characters); the chapter headings, Eva and Frankie and the banter between Jake and Paige.
âHoney, my ego is bulletproof. you couldn't take it down with a rocket launcher.â
I enjoyed this author's voice. I am disappointed that I have not heard of Sarah Morgan before now. But this will definitely not be the last book I read from her.
    Fun and entertaining
Paige Walker and her 2 best friends, Frankie and Eva, are out of a job. It's a tough market to hack into NYC and they all want to stay there. Enter Jake Romano, the best friend of Paige's older brother, Matt, and also the source of Paige's heartbreak so many years ago when he rejected her. Jake has the capital and connections to help Paige start over and as much as it pains her to ask for help, she does so because she doesn't want to let her friends down. Although Jake and Paige have a tense dynamic, they were close friends a long time ago and don't mince words with one another, which Paige appreciates because she's so used to her family always protecting her. The story was cute, funny and had just the right amount of sexual tension and character development. I also loved the friendship between Paige, Frankie and Eva, they are the perfect balance for each other. As for Jake, I enjoyed watching his transformation and realizing that falling in love didn't spell doomsday for him.

    Publisher's Summary:
A brand-new novel everyone will be talking about from the award-winning author of Things We Didn't See Coming and What the Family Needed.
If you could help someone in pain, would you?
Evan is a nurse, a suicide assistant. His job is legal...just. He's the one at the hospital who hands out the last drink to those who ask for it. Evan's friends don't know what he does during the day. His mother, Viv, doesn't know what he's up to at night. And his supervisor suspects there may be trouble ahead.
As he helps one patient after another die, Evan pushes against legality, his own morality and the best intentions of those closest to him, discovering that his own path will be neither quick nor painless. He knows what he has to do.
In this powerful novel, movingly narrated by Carolyn Shakespeare-Allen, award-winning author Steven Amsterdam challenges listeners to face the most taboo and heartbreaking of dilemmas. Would you help someone end their life?
    Critic Reviews:
"There's something fresh and engaging about Steven Amsterdam's writing." (Australian Women's Weekly)
"There is plenty to mull over in this challenging and topical story by a talented and thoughtful writer." (Portia Lindsay, Books + Publishing)
"Steven Amsterdam has certainly not taken the easy way out with his new work of literary fiction. The author of What the Family Needed and Things We Didn't See Coming has taken a long and unflinching look at one of the most important issues for us as human beings; how will we deal with our own death? As a palliative care worker Amsterdam has had to face death many times, this experience radiates off the page of this astonishing novel which looks unflinchingly at the issue of terminally ill patients choosing how and when they will die. There are many voices discussing euthanasia today but very few do it with the light touch that Amsterdam brings to his work. The characters in The Easy Way Out are complex and fragile. The narrative dances between humour and pathos never lingering too long in either camp. Heartbreaking, funny, life-changing and sexy. This book raises important questions that we must all one day face and it does it without a hint of sentimentality. This is a book I wish I had written, a book I urge everyone to read." (Krissy Kneen, author of Affection, Triptych and Steeplechase)
"In this captivating novel, Steven Amsterdam explores the philosophical complexity of end-of-life choice without ever losing the urgency of an absorbing plot. The Easy Way Out is written with insight, humor, and brio." (Andrew Solomon award-winning author of Far from the Tree, The Noonday Demon and The Reckoning)
"Amsterdam is so damn good. He is up there with the best, Delillo and the like, original as Tsolkias, but most importantly he is a master storyteller in his own right, assured and compelling, he somehow articulates things you know deep down but never been able to put your finger on. I never want to stop reading him." (Anna Krien, best-selling author of Night Games, Into the Woods and US and Them)

    written from truth
The scenes from a nurses perspective really rang true, palliation whilst not as final as nebitol is practiced at end of life all for the same reasons, to end extended suffering and poor quality of life. The ending where the old Viv had left and voided their pact, showed a reverance for life.

In this mesmerising English debut audiobook, a man escapes his former life to enter an enchanted place.
'A man's eye is accommodative, like his heart.'
Samuel Browne's wife has left him suddenly after just three years of marriage. She invites him to 'go live a better life without me'. He must start again, and alone. And so it is that Sam finds himself deep in the English countryside in a cold but characterful old house, remote and encircled by hills, in the employment and company of an older, wiser man, a man as fond of mystery as he is of enlightenment.
What is the purpose of the seemingly hopeless task set for Sam in the house's ancient library? What is the secret of the unused room? And where does a life lose its way or gain its meaning?
The combe is home to a truth born of fraud, a building made of light, and a family wrecked by recklessness: loss and love reverberate around the house and around the novel, providing pleasure, pain and purpose. Combe Hall is a house designed to honour and to enthral. And this very fine debut novel does exactly the same things.

Starts out quite well and leads the reader into what appears to be a plot with a possible twist. But then it just fizzles out. Disappointing.
    Remarkable hymn to books
VERDICT: Remarkable hymn to the healing powers of books, readers, writers, and nature. A delight to enjoy word by word.
Wow! When Scribe Publications UK approached me to review The Sacred Combe, I had really good vibes with the synopsis. Indeed, I was right away plunged in the wonderful world of books and nature, reminding me of so many other beloved works.
The book opens on the gorgeous description of a walled garden. I felt right back in The Secret Garden. Plus, there is a robin and so many birds and bird songs in the whole book. And if you will not find Colin, thereâs Corvin, pretty close sounds.
This is only the beginning of the delight I felt reading this memorizing literary novel. Thereâs a bit of a mystery, but the pace and style are definitely more part of the literary fiction genre.
It is the story of Sam. After three years of marriage, his wife wrote him a letter and left him. This was totally unexpected and Sam experiences not only grief, but a loss of identity and panic. So, what do you do when life is too hectic?
Yes, read a book of course, but it needs to be a fairly long book to do the trick, right?
What a wise man! And so he goes toâ Charing Cross Road! Lucky man!
The descriptions of the books, book covers and bindings are fantastic, here and basically all throughout the book, with unique old editions.
I have the feeling you are already hooked, even though we have hardly started! That was my experience, I wanted to linger on every page.
Sam decides eventually to purchase The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Gibbon. In case you donât know and wonder, the book does exist, as I believe all the numerous books mentioned in the novel. Unless the author manged to trick me. In volume 7 of this super long series, he finds a small notice: someone is looking for a volunteer to archive a private library, board and lodging provided.
Thinking that could only be good for his soul, Sam resigns from his job and goes, in the middle of nowhere, to work at Combe Hall, built in the 1600s.

    Action-packed Crime Story
Let me start off by saying, I finished this book several months ago, before I started publishing reviews on my blog. I felt like it deserved a proper review.
Crashers tells the fast paced often exhilarating story between Nathan and Shari, a couple who suddenly finds themselves down on their luck, and the men responsible for staging numerous car accidents. Shari, overtaken with the need to make ends meet and the sweet sound of the "good" life ahead, agrees to be a part of the cap and hammer scheme. It's a revealing story of what desperation and greed can do to a person.
The cover captured my attention right off the hop, as well as the blurb on the back of the book. The couples' struggles, their desperation, their "do-good" attitudes, all these things made me feel for the characters. I really got into the storyline, and wanted to know what happened next. I had to pry myself away from it. The ending was definitely not what I expected. I love that! I appreciate a book that can surprise you, even when you think you know what's going to happen. I could see this being turned into a movie. It is one that I will be watching for.
I enjoyed this novel a lot. Lindy has done a great job combining action, crime and love. I understood Shari and Nathans' reasoning behind jumping into such a dangerous scam, but at the same time I wanted to jump into the pages and tell them to just say NO! I read through it in a short time period because of how easy it was to get caught up in the action.
I didn't much care for Bryce's character. He was well-written, don't get me wrong, but if I were to see or talk to him on the streets, there would have been so many scumbag flags flying. He seemed very full of himself right from the start. i definitely would not have gotten into any sort of agreement with him. I guess that's just how innocent Shari was. She seemed very easy to manipulate.
I would recommend this book to readers who like a quickly paced, action/crime combo. It's gotten lots of great reviews and was very eye opening. I rated this one a 5/5.
I got lucky and won a signed copy of the book from someone's blog (can't remember which one for the life of me)
    Tension Packed Thriller!
Wow! I've heard of this racket before, auto insurance fraud, but it kind of sounded rather lame in the real world. This book made it sound kind of thrilling and easy.
