Funny

Funny, but somewhat risqué.

A great read

I enjoyed this book and will continue to watch the author with interest.(love to know who the writer really is, so I can check the other books.) I do not get American humor and it was clearly meant to be humorous. I'm sure other people will love it. I was drawn to it by the Look inside,and the opening chapter. I should have realized that the failure to capture the pig set the tone of 'humor' - it was not the brutal soldiery who enter the scene next. I liked the 2 males/2 female split between the protagonists. It covered some new territory, though I would have preferred less 'sexualized' cursing. The battle scenes were well done, actually very exciting; the characters were engaging and the sacrifice of the cow was moving. The trickery was superb, and I enjoyed measuring it up against the standard epic fantasy tropes. I am a Grimdark fan - Abercrombie and Abraham are the writers for me.

Full of fantasy fun, loads of laughs, suspense, detailed character development, witty dialogue. Couldn't put book down, finished it in record time. Would love to see it made into a movie! Eagerly awaiting other books from this author.

Good debut

It's nice to read some comedy in fantasy. The whole chosen one save the world thing gets a bit too serious. This book does it right

Full Scale Fantasy Fun

Wow, this was fun. Itâs big and epic, has dragons and war, warriors and wide-eyed farm boys, magic, monsters and so much sarcasm. I loved that sarcasm, it was brilliant, and perfectly compliments the characters, the world and just everything that made this a thoroughly enjoyable read.

The plot is pretty simple at heart â a young farmer is pushed past breaking point because of the crushing taxes imposed on him by the cruel dragon overlords, life takes a turn for the worse, he meets up with some dodgy mercenaries and everything gets out of hand. Thereâs also a crazy old drunkard and a some-what reformed mage, and somehow it all ends in a plan to rob a dragon. But thatâs just the start. This book is part epic, part heist-caper and all excellent fun as events snowball into an unstoppable and almost inevitable avalanche thatâs part farce, part brilliance.

If you like your fantasy to be ethereal and deep and dark and gritty, you will not get that here. These characters are bold, larger than life, swear extensively, and are full of flaws â with occasional good points thrown in.

Enjoyed this one

I enjoyed this fourth book in the Tony Hill and Carol Jordan series, more than the previous three. I think I am getting used to the narrator, and his poor attempts at regional accents bothered me less than previously. This book has plenty of twists and turns and really keeps you guessing right up until the end. A little far fetched in places but I got past that and managed to ignore the silliest aspects which ( to me) stretched believability almost a little too far in places. Great read though. Looking forward to the fifth instalment

Disappointing on a number of Levels

I found this story weak and the narration did not work for me with Mr Reichlin failing to provide reasonable accents. It would have been preferable to have true northern and north east accents but better to have none than this half way house.

A bit predictable

I felt this was a bit of a predictable story in some ways. The narrator still hasn't got his head around differentiating between the voices of the characters in the book - they all sound very similar and it makes picking the book up after a break very confusing (and even if you haven't had a break for that matter!!!)

Brilliant story, dreadful narration

What a shame about the narration. How did anyone think it was acceptable? His attempt at accents is embarrassing. Thankfully the story is absorbing but it will make me think twice about purchasing any more books this man reads!

Great Spinoza story

I chose this book because I like J.R.'s style and way of telling a story. I'm familiar with and enjoy his characters and all of their individual character nuances. I'm not a critic and worry about prose or continuity. But I do enjoy the interactions of different characters from his different series. It makes it more enjoyable to see how all of these familiar with the shadow world interact with each other. I love your stories and look forward to reading them. My purpose for reading is an escape from my humdrum and restrictive life and you give me the ability to escape into another world. Thank you so much.

The Vampire on the train

I liked the story, but it was too short. I would like to hear more about the possibility of the two gentlemen accidentally meeting up again in the future and possibly becoming comrades in arms. Maybe the professor could help him out with a case or two.

Spinoza returns in an emotionally satisfying short story I'm happy I read.

I picked up the newest Spinoza story during a one day only $0.99 sale. I have read and enjoyed the Spinoza trilogy and I looked forward on revisiting the detective to learn what he has been up to since his cameo in Easy Rider. I wasn't disappointed. This story raises a question about the value of life. Is the life of an apparently harmless vampire who has never harmed a human being worth more than that of a human who hunts and kills vampires indiscriminately? This is what Spinoza must decide. For me, the biggest highlight of the story was the appearance of Samantha Moon.

Spinoza is at it again.

J.R. Rain has written another great short story. Spinoza is a great detective and has his way to handle life and the unnatural. I love the way J.R. is entwining all of his characters into each different book he writes. Can't wait to see if everyone end up solving the big one soon!

The plot was average to decent, but the book really turns on the characters and how much you want them to succeed or not.

The book has almost no highs only abject lows. If you don't like depressing books, you may give this a pass but if you use stories to experience emotions, this one captures the essence of loss, confusion, loneliness, need, and regret.

Occasionally repetitive feeling, but viewed in context of the storyline, that actually adds to the atmosphere of the novel and helps the characters more relatable.

Love and Death in Quarry's World

Leslie Fiedler wrote a great book entitled Love and Death in the American Novel. Love and Death play an equally important role in American crime fiction. In The Last Quarry (which may not be the last, only the last for now) "Quarry" (Max Allan Collins' hit man's pseudonym) is in retirement. He discovers a woman who has been kidnapped, saves her, and receives a contract offer from her father. The problem is that the target is a young woman. A sweet young woman. A librarian. As Quarry observes her, and then meets her, he must make a decision--whether to opt for love or death. Once he discovers the reason for the contract that decision becomes easier. This is an excellent addition to the series, with a particularly satisfying ending, involving lots of love and lots of death. If Quarry is now to be retired for good, we wish him well. Side point: in the course of the story Quarry must adopt a second pseudonym. He calls himself Jack Keller, with a sweet touch of homage to Lawrence Block's hit man protagonist. Thanks to Max Allan Collins for another superb Quarry novel, with a quiet wish that this not be the last.

David Gibbins does it again. Another great read in the Jack Howard Series that will make it hard to put down. It is fast paced with the use of enough facts to make is plausible if not totally believable. Can't wait for the next in the series.

I have read almost all of David Gibbins books and have loved every one.

Perhaps a glossary or brief bio of all principal characters as developed up to the last book would be useful.

I follow the series and therefore I read everyone but the style is wearing a little and there is not enough reprising of events especially those very early in the series; the author just assumes that the reader remembers everything he has ever written and will naturally get it. Fun Trash Read

Fun trash read, good historical and archaeological facts along the way.

A good book for fans of David Gibbins; not a book to start the series.

This is a continuation of his previous book. The story is good but you need to be interested in Egyptian and biblical history. Much of the story is fictional. I know little about Egyptian history but I always assumed that RII was the pharaoh at the time of Moses? The book ends with the suspicion that there will be a sequel. But if you are a fan of David Gibbins, it is a good read.

Boring

I very rarely give up on a book, this one made the list. I tried listening twice gave up at about the half way point, just didn't hold my interest. A lot of dialogue with little action or suspense, fell far short of the expectations listed in the summary/details. At least it was a read & listen for free. Oh well, on to another audio book.

Unusual

Corbett has serious writing chops, there's no doubt about it. This story flows well with no awkward hitches. But his real talent lies in his ability to "keep it real" with his reader and still keep the story mostly interesting. I say mostly because there was a point in the book where I realized that Corbett was veering dangerously into character study territory.

Grain of Salt Warning: Understand, this is purely my taste, I prefer books that have a good balance between plot and character - too far in either direction and I lose interest. Corbett definitely flirted with making this book almost entirely about what was going on in the psyche of his characters, which muddied the middle of it a bit for me. But right around the end he popped back in to move the plot along to a good conclusion.

If you're thinking about getting this book, know what you're getting into. Whether or not you like Mercy of the Night will depend largely on where your preferences lie.

Hard Boiled with Heart

Corbett delivers nuanced characters from a diversity of races, ages, sexes, background in this detective yarn. His rendition of the present day is authentic and modern, sparkling with lean, apt descriptions, rippling with embedded social commentary. His command of metaphor delights, his story pacing thrills, and his themes continue to echo long after the last page.

The reader does a superb job of bringing the characters close, managing dozens of unique voices and somehow staying consistent through the telling; a great performance.

Mr. Corbett really made me feel the heart of the different characters. Made my heart ache and cry at times.

Just well - convoluted and uninvolved

Not that keen on the performer, but the story is mechanical, convoluted, uninvolving. I just didn't care about the characters.

I Love This Series

I really enjoyed the characters and how they related to each other. The plot is realistic and fast paced with several twists and turns that keeps the reader emotionally involved in the story. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Good Story, Not So Good Narration

I like the story, enough so that I want to read the second book but I will probably read it instead of listen to it.

The narrator was inconsistent in her reading of the book. At times she would speak haltingly, as though losing track of where she was in the material. I did find it endearing that it was evident or at least appeared to me, that she was caught up in the moments of sadness, as I was, and seemed to be trying to read through tears. Her best reading was done during the reading of the diary, when she was speaking as a different character. This makes me wonder if she were intentionally reading haltingly at times because she felt that best portrayed the character? Unknown, regardless the effect was off putting to me and took me out of the story more than in it.

I liked the heroine in this book. Which was a nice feeling since it seems rather hard to like the heroines in most of the newer fiction I've read in the past few years.

Okay, but not the best read

The main character really annoyed me- and the character development seemed forced and predictable - I knew what was happening before they did. But on the plus side, the writing is very descriptive and I could feel what the characters were going through as the author described their emotions, reactions etc.

I was expecting more. A ton of build up and then it just kind of fell flat. I wanted to like the book. I even listened to the end of it, but I just couldn't.

The narrator was boring - almost robotic. I liked reading this book far better than listening.

I was hoping for more of a supernatural story. The writing was a bit choppy at times. I started to see what was going to be the "big twist" in the middle of the book. It wasn't a big surprise. When I thought that might be the end, the book rambled on some more. The characters are not incredibly likable. I struggled to get through it at times. There were a few funny moments that make me not regret reading this novel.
