Timely relatable book for children to learn about tolerance

I love this book! What a gem! I bought it for my lesson on Simchat Torah for grades 2-4 Religious class. The art is whimsical and appeals to children as well as adults. The story isn't too long which is rare in Jewish children's books...really holds the kid's attention. I wanted to teach my students that the Torah is more than history & bunch of rules to follow. That it's relatable to our lives now. In my lesson we spoke about Rabbi Hillel & the origin of the "golden rule" which is originally a Jewish mitzvah. This book brings about good discussions with children on what's going on in the world in the U.S. election, refugees, immigrants, religious & ethnic tolerance at an age appropriate level.

Stand On One Foot & Learn Torah?

This is a really good picture book which reaches out to young children with the famous "Do unto others..." quotation of Rabbi Hillel. I read it to pre-school through second grade students who liked the story and then stood on one foot--or tried!-- while reciting the famous quotation Hillel used to answer a young man who wanted to learn the entire Torah while standing on one foot. Our library definitely needs additional copies because several students wanted to check it out!

This is a humorous, but ultimately wise tale that all young children can relate to ...

A young man with a lyre slung over his shoulder shaded his eyes as he looked over at the walled-in city of Jerusalem. He wanted to learn the Torah, but not just in any old way. He wanted a great teacher, but just how would he know who was? The young man sat under a tree and scratched his head, thinking great thoughts. Not. All of a sudden he noticed a blue bird perched on a ânearby branch standing on one foot.â The little bird was so well-balanced he didnât even plop onto the ground. âThatâs it,â he cried out, âA great teacher would be clever enough to stand on one foot.â

The foolish boy set off to Jerusalem to find himself that great teacher ... the very one who could teach him the entire Torah standing on one foot! Surely there would be a wise rabbi who could do that. âCan you teach me the whole Torah,â he asked the first rabbi he saw, âwhile standing on one foot?â The rabbi quickly dismissed him with a laugh, claiming that even Rabbi Hillel, a great scholar couldnât manage that one. Alas, the foolish, angry young man went on his way to find a wise rabbi who could teach him. He stomped and fumed (grrrrrr!) until he spotted another rabbi reading a scroll.

Surely a rabbi reading a scroll could help him and he asked his question once again. Of course the rabbi turned him away by exclaiming, âDonât you know there are 613 commandments in the Torah?â On and on he went pronouncing all the difficult things he would have to do in order to teach that foolish young man. He too agreed that even Rabbi Hillel couldnât manage that one. He asked yet another rabbi and then some children, but wasnât getting anywhere.

There are several things that you will learn about mammals in this book. "Todos los mamíferos tienen algo de pelo o pelaje. Su calor corporal siempre se mantiene casi igual. Sus bebés toman leche." If you look closely at the giraffes you can see that they have large spots on their short coat of hair. Then there are those skunks. It's easy to see that they have black fur with white stripes going down their backs. They are different animals, but they both have fur or hair. Some animals have more than others. Take for instance the squirrel. "Las ardillas están cubiertas de la pelaje desde la cabeza hasta la cola." On the other hand, the elephant has just a bit of hair at the very end of his tail!

Mammals are also warm-blooded. They create their own body warmth and "su temperatura se mantienen casi siempre igual." It's amazing that an animal in the desert or the polar bear can do that even though they live in very different places! Even the mountain goat standing in the snow is kept warm by its thick coat of fur. You will get to take a look at mamíferos bebé. You can see the wolf pups, the fawn, and the piglets drinking their mother's milk. You will learn that most, but not all mammals grow inside their mother's bodies, how some lay eggs, you'll learn what they eat (herbivores, carnivores, omnivores), and you'll learn many other interesting things about mamíferos. ¿Eres un mamifero?

This is a fun, fascinating look at mammals the young reader will enjoy. This is the Spanish edition, but can be shared by all in the homeschool or classroom setting. Confident readers can tackle this beginning nonfiction book with ease while the newly independent readers can work through this chapter book with a bit of assistance. The layout is vibrant and there are full-color photographs of each animal being discussed. There are captions that add additional information. For example, when we take a looke at the beaver we learn that "Los castores comen corteza y hojas." This is one in the series, Conoce los grupos de animales. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, and additional recommended book and website resources to explore.

In this book you will learn the basics about amphibians and get to see some great pictures! Do you know what an ectotherm is?

Have you ever seen a tadpole swimming around in a pond? Probably most children have been told that they will grow into frogs and those who live near fresh water may have seen the many stages they go through to become adults. These changes seen in an amphibian are called metamorphosis. Frogs, toads and salamanders are all amphibians. Most amphibians "start their lives in water" and end up living on land when they are adults. All of them have backbones, they cannot "make their own body heat" and therefore they "get cold when the air is cold" and they "get warmer when the air is warm." They are cold-blooded creatures or, using the more scientific term, ectotherms.

Some amphibians live in cooler climates but there are some who do live in warm climates. In order to stay cool, some burrow in the ground and peek out at the word at the entrance to their hole. Another characteristic of amphibians is that they lay eggs. In this book you will meet many different kinds of amphibians. You will learn about the kinds of eggs they lay, how tadpoles grow, what they eat, you will learn about their predators, how a male poison dart frog guards its eggs, the amphibian metamorphosis, frogs' eardrums, how they breathe, how they protect themselves from predators and how a wood frog hibernates.

This is a very interesting, basic introduction to animal science and the amphibian life cycle. Although there are three orders of amphibians, caeilians are only briefly mentioned in the "Fun Facts." This book is only intended to be a simple introduction and I don't feel further explanation is necessary. The book is very appealing, well written and I like the fact that the author chose to use scientific terminology (ectotherms, metamorphosis) despite the lower reading level. Scattered dialogue balloons point to areas in the photographs that are emphasized in the text. For example, one balloon asks, "Can you see this frog's eardrum?" In the back of the book are some "Fun Facts," a matching quiz, an index, a glossary and additional recommended book and website resources. If you want to see a really interesting picture, you'll have to check out the male poison dart frog carrying its young!

entertaining without being boring, my step granddaughter although not Jewish enjoys Shabbat rituals and alley routines. She loved the book it is expanding her horizons in this Socialist Portugal

This is a wonderful story about how young Sarah prepares for one of her favorite holidays, Passover ...

Sarah was excited because Passover was coming up. She was helping pick up her toys as her Mom was cheerfully dusting a mirror. While they worked she learned about why the Jewish people, who were once called Israelites, celebrated the holiday. Long ago in ancient Egypt they had been slaves. They struggled to do things like move stones for their slave drivers. Her Mom told her that during Passover it was a time to remember that the Jews had once been slaves and it was a time to "celebrate our freedom." Moses had gone as a messenger of God to the Egyptian king to ask that he set the Israelites free, but he refused. As a result, "God sent many troubles to Egypt" until he relented and set them free.

The house had to be cleaned from top to bottom and then Sarah had "to clean out the regular bread and cookies." After that she'd even "brush a feather across the shelves" so she wouldn't "miss even one crumb." She learned all about the reason that the Israelites had to eat matzah, a bread that they ate during Passover. There were a lot of things for Sarah to do to prepare for Passover. She shopped at the store for "special Passover foods," helped her Mom prepare the seder plate, and was ready for her part in the Haggadah. Grandfather broke "the middle matzah" and carefully hid it somewhere in the house. Would Sarah be the one to find the afikomen this year before this big kids did?

This is a wonderful story about how young Sarah prepares for one of her favorite holidays, Passover. Throughout the book young Sarah is learning about her Jewish heritage by listening to and helping family members prepare for the holiday. As she helps prepare, she learns about Jewish history. Throughout this book are numerous informative sidebars that can be referred to or directly read to pass on historical information. For example, one of them discusses what is put on the seder plate and its significance. For example, "The bitter foods help people remember how hard it is to be a slave." This is a charming tale of how Josh and Sammy Spider welcome their new neighbors with a Jewish mitzvah ...

Sammy Spider watched as Josh Shapiro helped his mother mix up a batter. Sammy peered at the sugar, flour, and milk on the shelf behind Josh and asked his own mother what they were doing. It was going to be a special cake for their new neighbors and he listened carefully as Mrs. Shapiro talked to Josh. "When the cake is done we'll take it over to welcome out new neighbors who have just moved here from Israel". Of course Sammy wanted to bake a cake, but little spiders don't bake, they spin webs. He continued to listen from his web by the window and learned even more interesting things when Mr. Shapiro came in to talk to Josh.

It was customary that families should bring a loaf of bread and salt to those who moved. Mr. Shapiro told Josh that it meant that it would be their "wish that they enjoy many happy meals together." There were so many things that Sammy had to learn and he wondered why Josh suggested they also take along pita and hummus. "Pita is Israeli bread and hummus is a salty dip." Soon the moving van arrived and Sammy watched from the window as the movers began carrying furniture into the house. Such a cute story

My 3 year old loved this story, and chose it at bedtime regularly for a month (long after Passover was over). As someone else pointed out, it seems to be aimed at readers /families who celebrate Passover. The story is cute enough that anyone would enjoy it, but you may need a companion book if the holiday vocabulary is unfamiliar for your class or family. We own My First Passover, by Tomie DePaul, which would do the trick. I'm sure there are other good choices as well.

Fun repetition story

This is a fun story to read on Passover. They kids loved joining in repeating the repetition lines in the story.

It has some cute drawings and shows the little brother getting tired and falling asleep during the seder.

Colorful and interesting pictures kept the kids entertained for the story.

Great story for preschoolers

My 3 year old granddaughter listened intently and when I finished reading to her she enjoyed looking at the illustrations as she paged through the text. Just the right amount of repetition and anticipation.

Really Cute

Kids think this book is hilarious and it'll be a new Jewish favorite at our place. The "rude" vegetables are very sweet. Nice message, cute illustrations.

The only thing I'd improve is to split the double-page layouts when possible. The text is *really* small on an ipad mini. One page per screen would improve this.
