Fun alternative to traditional forms of transportation

Spice up your studies of transportation with an uncommon one - the hang glider. It is a form of transportation, though definitely a nontraditional one. This simple reader explains what kind of aircraft the hang glider is, its parts, and how it works. It also touches on safety. Each page has a striking photograph with just a few sentences explaining it. Young readers will be able to independently enjoy it, while nonreaders will appreciate having it read to them.

At the end, there is a review diagram of the parts of the glider, fun facts, a glossary, and sources for further reading. I enjoyed reading it and learned something new. Kids are going to love learning about a new way to have an adventure.

15 miles on the Erie Canal!

Factual, colorful and interesting but written for children.

GOOD BOOK

This is an excellent introductory history of the Erie Canal! Do you know what a "hoggee" is?

Early settlers in the United States thought that the country would fare better if it were larger and by building a canal, "a waterway for boats," they could expand the country. One of the routes they were looking at to the west crossed Appalachian Mountain chain, but without a canal travel was tedious and difficult. One possibility was "from the Hudson River to Lake Erie." People and products needed to be able to go back and forth from the East coast to the Great Lakes region if they wanted growth. In 1817 DeWitt Clinton, governor of New York, decided to go ahead with the plan to build the Erie canal.

The job was going to be no mean feat and "men and horses would have to do the hard work." In this book you will learn the dimensions of the canal, what a towpath is, the reason they built locks, you'll get a glimpse at a massive lock system, you'll learn about aqueducts, when the canal finally opened, how long it is, the route it spanned, packet boats, barges that "carried products west to east," the growth of cities, its hub, later improvements, how railroads "took away more and more canal business" and other very interesting facts.

This is a nice concise history of the Erie Canal. It was well written and the numerous photographs, maps, period illustrations and art reproductions added a lot to this introductory history. There are many dialogue balloons that talk about a point being made in the text. For example, one says "In one part of the canal, five locks raised the boats and five others lowered them-much like an escalator." I did notice one typo, which does not detract from the quality of the book. On page nineteen the word aqueduct(s) is spelled correctly in the text, but is incorrectly spelled "aquaduct" in a balloon. A bit of Wite-Out and a pen will easily fix the error. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, some "Fun Facts," and additional recommended book and website resources. Do you know why some children were called "hoggees?" If not, you will find out in this book!

Loved the story! I am happy to have it in my classroom library.

It is inspirational while in a fun light hearted way

This is a book that all boys and girls should read. It is inspirational while in a fun light hearted way. It tells us that we can be anything we want but we need to LIVE! Each of us have our own superpower, we just have to realize it and focus on it to perfect it.

I love the illustrations in this book. The beautiful way it depicts a teacher encouraging and giving a child confidence. It is sure to be a joy to read by anyone who picks it up.

Perfect Man, perfect story!!

"Michael Maxwell McAllum was the smallest boy in his class. He lived in a small house in a small town on a small street." So begins Wilson and Griffiths' delightful story, "Perfect Man."

Michael's all time most-favoritest superhero is the blue-caped, silver-helmeted Perfect Man. He's a hero of mystery, no one knows his true name, no one even knows where he lives, but he's got marketing on his side! "Michael Maxwell McAllum was Perfect Man's biggest fan. He covered his wall with Perfect man posters. He read Perfect man comics and played Perfect Man video games. He ate Perfect Man cereal and wore Perfect Man T-shirts." To Michael, Perfect Man truly IS perfect in every way.

Then an interesting twist happens (the first of many) and PM decides to call it quits. He holds a press conference and tells the public that it's time to move on and do something else. The press is curious-where will he go? What will he do? "Oh, I'll find something," PM says, "after all, there's ore than one way to save the world."

You'd THINK MMM would be devastated, but he's got a secret faith in PM. After all, PM escaped from space pirates, escaped from the 10th Dimension and even came back from the dead! Of COURSE PM would be coming back, how could you think otherwise??

Nothing happens all summer except for an alien invasion in New York ("They always invaded New York. They never invaded his small town"); other superheroes team up to send the green nasties back to outer space and PM is still not heard form. THEN the next wonderful twist in the story happens: "and then Perfect Man came back. Or maybe not. It was hard to tell. He wasn't wearing the costume." Michael Maxwell McCullum believes that his new teacher, Mr. Clark, IS Perfect Man, only a bit flabbier and rounder.

Mr. Clark doesn't yell, loose his temper or take any sick days. When there's conflict, he's there to help smooth the way. When there's pain, he's there to make it feel better. "he was everywhere at once. At least it seemed that way." Though he's convinced that his teacher is PM, he doesn't tell anyone, not even his parents.

Fall's Here series

This book walks the reader through the growing and harvesting of apples. It also presents information on some of the different ways that apples are used.

There are a number of things that make this series very good for both educational purposes and pleasure reading. First, the design is attractive and easy to follow. The organization works especially well for a teacher who wishes to cover certain aspects of fall in an orderly manner. I also appreciated the use of a table of contents, glossary, index, and additional resources. Each book also contains an activity that goes along with the information covered in each book. The second thing I like is the friendly and appealing illustrations. The illustrations are very child friendly. I also enjoyed the text which is simple enough for younger readers, but also includes side notes for readers who want more information. The text is written as a narrative which makes for a good read a loud. I highly recommend this series for all those that want to learn more about fall. I liked the fact that I learned some things from these books that I did not know previously. For example, I did not realize that when apple seeds are planted the apples they produce are not the same variety of apple as the seed that was planted. Lots of interesting things to learn in these books.

This is an excellent book for the young student to learn about apples and what they are used for ...

Summer has changed to fall and a family is heading to the Apple Tree Orchard to buy some apples and taste their cider. The "air feels cooler" and "colorful leaves blow in the breeze." Bushel baskets sitting at the base of several trees are filled to the brim with ripe, red apples. When fall arrives its the perfect time to head to an apple orchard to buy apples and taste some tangy cider. The young girl smiles as she bites into a crisp red apple. Her wide-eyed little brother watches her as he prepares to take a bite out of a green one. They soon discover that there are seeds nestled inside the core of his apple.

When they are in the orchard they will learn how those seeds are planted, how they grow into trees, and how and why "apples are different from the apple that made the seed." Do you know? If not, you'll learn why they are when you read this book. In the springtime the leaves grow from buds and quickly spread into beautiful, sweet smelling blossoms. Bees soon arrive to "spread pollen from tree to tree" to fertilize the blossoms. In this book you'll get to see what the apples look like as they grow, how apple pickers carefully harvest the crop, what happens if they pull off the spur, how the apple crop is used, and how apple cider and juices are made. Do you know how many apples are pressed to make a gallon of cider?

This is an excellent book for the young student to learn about apples and what they are used for.
