A Terrific, Evocative Mystery

An Inquisitive Man by Gary Krich takes the reader back to London of 1876 (and some twenty years before that) yet manages to speak to the reader about issues of today. Easter Wells is a dead ringer for David Bowler, a tailor who disappeared twenty years ago under mysterious circumstances. The lurid rumors about Bowlerâs disappearance are attached to his affair with Lord Henleyâs daughter, his attack on Henley, and whispers of his murder, allegedly orchestrated by Henley. When Easter Wells arrives in London, his resemblance to Bowler and the notorious legacy surrounding his disappearance causes quite the sensation.

Wellsâ instant celebrity is what gives the novel such a contemporary relevance. As Lord Henley explains to Wells about his presence: âOut there, they are celebrating. Your arrival has brought new vigour to their prosaic lives! They are celebrating the rebirth of a scandal . . .â Krichâs arch examination of the attention-givers rather than the attention-seekers is a clever twist in this tight little tale that is marked by numerous surprises. On one level, Wellsâ obsession with the Bowler case (âthe adventure of the missing manâ) is an obsession with his own celebrity, but much deeper motivations are driving his investigations.

As the mystery carefully unfolds with Wells interviewing all of those either involved or in the know, the reader encounters the pleasures of Krichâs fine ear for dialogue and his urbane writing style. Heartwarming

It's 1959 and Maggie has always dreamed of being a model, but when she's nineteen years old and working as one she's being ordered to stop. Her career is over before it properly started. When she's also being left by the person she loves the most Maggie is heartbroken. She returns to her family in Liverpool with the plan to start over. On her way there Maggie runs into Tim and his son, who are taking the same train. It's a nice coincidence and she's glad to see a friendly face. They've already met once in London and Maggie didn't think she'd ever see him again. Tim is kind to Maggie and asks her out. Can Maggie trust him or is he another man with too many secrets?

Is going back to her family the right step for Maggie or will she have a difficult time ahead of her? Not everyone might be thrilled with her return and Maggie has to find a way to make a living. She has the chance to visit old friends and to catch up with family life. Maybe being back in Liverpool isn't so bad after all, but seeing something of the world remains alluring. What will the future bring, does it have more heartache in store for Maggie or will she have a real chance at happiness?

Many A Tear Has To Fall is a beautiful story about love, trust and family. I immediately liked Maggie. She's a talented and determined girl. She's strong and resilient as well and even though life can be unfair sometimes she never wallows or whines. I loved reading about her life and enjoyed getting to know her. Maggie is stylish and she can do anything she wants to do. She's young and has already lost a career, which makes her mature for her age. She has to discover what she likes besides modelling to be able to have her own life again and I loved reading about her attempts. She's a sweet sympathetic girl, which really makes the story.

June Francis has a wonderful warm writing style. She writes in a descriptive way that makes it easy to picture the scenes. I love how realistic her stories are. I felt like I was visiting Maggie and her family, having my own spot at their table which enabled me to see and hear everything. I like how June Francis describes both the time and setting, her writing is vivid and accurate and that makes the story very strong. I loved being taken back to the end of the 1950s and thoroughly enjoyed seeing the world from Maggie's point of view.

Many A Tear Has To Fall is a great novel with fantastic main characters. I was immediately fascinated by Tim and his family. There are a lot of fabulous secrets I couldn't wait to read more about. I was hooked from the start and loved every aspect of this story. June Francis manages to combine cozy family life with fascinating intrigues in a fantastic way. I liked that there are plenty of surprising twists and turns and the ending is unexpected and heartwarming.

All the sites worth seeing in Rome

A useful travel guide. However not a particularly well written story.

Avventura romana

I just finished reading Lisa's wonderful book. At first it seems like an exact description of her trip to Rome Italy, which was almost exactly when I was there. I was captivated by it. Then she makes a surprising mystical twist and it is totally believable that she is Faustina. I seriously was hoping for a sequel! I also loved her brother's 'Afterword'. I did linger with it because it was good to know I was with her even when I was not able to pick it up.

I loved this book. I hated to read the last page and wanted more. I felt I was taken there and experienced what she and her brother did. Hope there is a sequal

Captain Ice is HOT!

This story may easily be a 5 star book for some readers, because the bones of this story are FABULOUS! Honestly, there are some fantastic twists in this story that I really loved. Both the hero (Stefan) and heroine (Bianca) are well-developed. I despised the villain - who happens to be the heroine's father. There were also wonderful secondary characters, too. The black raven? Loved it! Stefan was a fabulously strong hero who put the heroine in her place when she needed it most. LOL - you'll have to read to find out.

So where did it fall short for me? The reader didn't get to experience the final battle / resolution with the villain. If you don't like brutal battles between pirates, then this may be perfectly okay for you. But I read this whole story and wanted so much to experience that final battle scene, not to be told what happened! No, no, no, no, no!

I say give it a try because this could be a 5 star story for others.

Gotta love a handsome pirate!

I loved the prelude to this story and the idea that a childhood friendship could be the basis for a romance in adulthood. I also adore romanticized pirates. That being said (forgive me for being so particular, but I am a particular individual), a typo in the very first sentence was not an auspicious beginning, the word "armada" means an entire fleet of ships, not just one ship, and the slang term "okay" did not exist in the 1700's. This book has great potential, but it needs a good going over by a professional editor to clear it of these and other wince-worthy errors. It's a charming story, though, and if you're a bit less of a perfectionist than I am, it might be just your cup of tea.

Feel-Good Swahbuckling Romance

If you like swashbuckling romance, then this book is for you. Talented author Elle Marlow presents a compelling story of grief and sorrow. Stefan Ice lost everything and seeks revenge on the man he blames by stealing his most priceless jewel, his daughter Bianca. But things rarely turn out as we expect them too, and in the end God, faith, and love triumph. A short read, highly entertaining. I recommend it highly.

5 stars for The Black Raven, White Dove!!!

I love a great Christian romance and this one was super unique. It was so much fun to read! Not only that, but I was able to draw parallels between the story and my own life. Using pirates as the setting was incredibly clever. I loved the world-building. And as always. Ms. Marlow had fantastic character development.

This a quick read that is sure to please.

LOVED it!

I thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful, very touching short story. I teared up a couple times, but the writing and tone of the story was so peaceful and sweet. I highly recommend if you like quick historical and meaningful short stories.

Reimagining biblical stories

The Art of reimagining biblical story telling is ancient, these short stories take you right into the sights, smells of Jerusalem, the desert and the key historical figures. I love how Lisa takes us into this journey. For me it was not too short at all, I read it slowly savoring each changing scene and lingering in it. I also pondered how these stories invite the reader to reread segments of the bible. Thank you Lisa, this is just lovely!

An Enjoyable, and Clean, Short Story!

What drew me to this, was the promise of a good, clean, uplifting story, and I was not disappointed. The story doesn't finish here, but promises to be the beginning of a very enjoyable tale!

Artistic Prose

It seemed to end too quickly, and had a ton of descriptions, but, if you're looking for a brief glimpse into history with prose that makes you think of a beautiful painting, look no further. Sweet and lovely, brief little read.
