  • Disaster-Proofing Your Coaching Business, Part Two

After overcoming a challenging chapter in my family’s story, I have become prepossessed with the idea of disaster-proofing my coaching business. Because when you’re a business coach, you are essentially running a trade. When you’re running a trade, all sorts of revenue-depleting shockers could happen: an accident, a disaster, or a pandemic. It is a scary thing to think about, but it’s also the reality for all of us. Yet, it’s okay to be terrified. After all, fear can be a productive emotion that can motivate you to put the necessary frameworks in place and disaster-proof your business.

Today, I share my obsession with helping business coaches look after themselves, their family, and their businesses. I highlight a few action points you should be taking to not only to disaster-proof your business but also to scale from having a coaching job to having a coaching business. I also discuss how you can redesign your business beyond merely coaching, mentoring, or teaching for your clients—all of which require you to show up to them—so you can feel more at ease in challenging times.

“Have a standalone, self-serve product. When you need a few months’ off because of sickness or disability, you’ll know that your clients and family are looked after.” - Matthew Kimberley

  • Disaster-Proofing Your Coaching Business, Part One

Seven years ago, Mrs. Kimberley gave birth to our son Edward, a bouncing baby boy with curly hair and a big, bright smile. We enjoyed the first three months with him, wallowing in his brilliance and beauty, as all parents do, as he did things for the first time. Then, a visit to the pediatrician disrupted our world and turned it upside-down: we had to move from Malta back to the UK, stay there for a few months, and I - distraught as my child’s life hung in the balance - couldn’t show up to my coaching business.

If you, as a coach, were in my situation, how would you react? If you had to wade through uncertainty, would your coaching business be able to keep you afloat?

In this episode, I share a peek behind the scenes of my life as a coach seven years ago. I share the story of Edward’s battle through a heart defect and how Mrs. Kimberley and I took care of him through his recovery. I discuss how this crisis impacted us and my coaching business. I explain why the difference between a coaching job and a coaching business matters. I also discuss how I communicated to my clients the situation I was in and illustrate how an act of kindness helped me overcome a very challenging time in our lives.

“Professional coaches claim to be business owners when what they actually have are coaching jobs that require their attendance to get paid. That can be a dangerous position.” - Matthew Kimberley

  • The Alternative To Content Creation For Coaches

In the days of yore, coaches, consultants, and thought leaders established their credentials by publishing an essential piece of content, whether it’s a book, research papers, or a speech. Then, they’d take their ideas with them and repeat it over and over again. Today, coaches are expected to be prolific content creators who consistently produce fresh ideas and novel perspectives. They do regular Facebook lives and Instagram streams—in addition to getting an article out on Medium or LinkedIn once a week. Before they know it, they’ve trapped themselves in content creation. But there’s beauty in simplicity...and repetition.

In this episode, I reveal the power of repeating your core ideas and the impact of saying your key messages over and over again. I define what a target market is and share how Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric, stood up for his message of innovation. I illustrate how carefully targeting your desired market can cure the greatest of your business ills. I also explain how you can establish yourself as an expert without going through the horrors of content creation and underscore—once again—the power of repeating yourself.

“When you’re planning content, say ‘here’s my big vision that’s going to change the world,’ and repeat variations of it over and over and over again.” - Matthew Kimberley

  • Should You Sell A Low-Priced Membership Program?

It’s a question as old as time: should I offer low-priced membership programs or subscriptions for my coaching business? The quick answer is, it depends. It’s not the worst idea in the world; having the membership or subscription program as a business model is profitable - if and when it’s feasible. But, there are several factors you need to assess to see if it’s a viable approach for you. What kind of investments will need to successfully launch a low-priced membership program? What will it take to sustain such a business model?

Today, I share my thoughts on low-priced membership, continuity, or subscription programs. I share some questions you can ask yourself to see if selling lower-priced membership programs is the right model for your coaching business. I illustrate the different scenarios where it’ll be feasible for you to sell membership programs and discuss the potential pitfalls of offering low-priced coaching products. I also explain why you need to think about how much money you want to gain from your coaching business and reveal a great alternative to offering low-priced coaching subscriptions.

  • How To Sell Coaching Services

Many coaches open their doors, hang their shingle, and wait for people to make inquiries about their coaching services. But in the earlier days of my career as a self-employed coach, I learned right away that it’s a bad idea to wait for people to give you their money. There’s nothing wrong with going out to the world to sell your coaching services - to let people know how you can help them and the solutions you have to offer.

In this episode, I go way back to the dawn of time to share what I’ve learned from my first foray into self-employment. I illustrate my experience of living in a countryside boarding school and describe how I learned to juggle from my maths teacher. I explain how I began to make money out of busking as a juggler and discuss how I positioned myself to make people pay me more money. I also explain why you shouldn’t wait for potential coaching clients to initiate a conversation with you and underscore the power of actively taking your sale to the marketplace.

  • How To Properly Qualify Your Coaching Prospects

Sales is something slimy and sleazy for many coaches. The bad news is you need to close deals to make money as a coach, which makes sales and marketing inevitable. The good news? There is an absolutely easy route to landing sales with your prospects. No, you don’t have to bang your head against the wall trying to convert people you don’t need to convert - and you don’t have to feel like a fraud, either. The secret? Qualifying prospective clients before working with them.

In this episode, I discuss something dear to my heart, and something too many coaches take for granted: how to properly qualify your coaching prospects and why you need to get into the habit of doing it. I reveal the four types of qualifications potential clients need to pass before working with them and share some of the questions I ask to assess their qualifications. I also share an adage about selling and marketing and explain why it’s better to have a client who wants you than a client who needs you, if they cannot be both.

“When you get into the habit of qualifying coaching clients upfront, you’re no longer doing the song and dance routine of trying to sell on sales conversations.” - Matthew Kimberley

    • Creating desire versus creating need and the beauty of being self-employed

  • How To Get Paid To Do Market Research For Your Coaching Business

What if I told you that you could profit from doing your market research for your coaching business? It’s possible; I’ve done it myself. Understanding your target market is crucial if you are to find success in the coaching world. By using a simple, sneaky trick that marketers wouldn’t want you to know about, you can gain key information, get under your clients’ skin, and be in an incredibly advantageous position to meet your clients’ needs.

In this episode, I reveal how you can get paid while conducting marketing research for your coaching business. I illustrate what the Single Malt Mastermind accountability program is, how I ran it, and why I created it. I discuss the importance of hiring mentors and coaches, even if information and knowledge are free. I also describe how coaches spend too much effort trying to understand marketing and not enough time trying to understand their target market.

  • How To Get Corporate Coaching Clients

If you’re in the coaching market, chances are you’re not afraid of having direct sales conversations with business owners and entrepreneurs. But closing a deal with corporate coaching clients can be a little confusing, if not a tad daunting, for the first time. After all, coaching a group of enthusiastic entrepreneurs is strikingly different from coaching a group of corporate employees taking mandatory training. And, in an organization made up of several departments, who do you even talk to in an effort to make a sale?

In this episode, I share the framework and strategies I use to successfully close coaching deals with corporate clients. I illustrate the challenges a coach can face when trying to get clients in a large organization and reveal one of the biggest mistakes they can make when getting corporate clients. I also describe how you can build relationships with your potential clients, get them excited, and entice them by offering free strategy sessions.

  • How to Get a 90% Open Rate with Your Email Marketing

MFC011 - How to get a 90% open rate with your email marketing

In the world of email marketing, a lot of people get worried about their open rates and click-throughs. After all, if no one’s opening your emails - let alone reading them - you wouldn’t be able to close a deal with a prospective client, right? But If you’re one of those people, you might be focusing on the wrong metric.  Your open rates shouldn’t be the foundation of your email marketing strategy. Instead, I propose a different approach.

In today’s episode, I discuss how you can achieve a 90% open rate with your email marketing - or, rather, why you shouldn’t put too much emphasis on getting it. I illustrate how I’ve had to build a business on long-term email correspondence with prospective clients and define what the term ‘list hygiene’ means. I describe how some coaches find it easy to cultivate brand awareness but find it hard to land good deals. I also underscore the value of building trust, connection, and relationships with prospects and why you shouldn’t necessarily remove people from your list, even if they haven’t been opening your emails.

“When it comes to email selling, we have to look at it like how we look at any other kind of sales process: a long-term quality play.” - Matthew Kimberley

This week on Book Yourself Solid® Marketing For Coaches Podcast:

    • The relationship between marketing and selling and why “email marketing” should instead be called “email selling”
    • The correlation between sales, trust, and need
    • What ‘list hygiene’ is and why you need to be aggressive with it if you want a high open rate

MFC001 - Welcome to the Marketing for Coaches Show

Welcome to episode one of the Book Yourself Solid® Marketing for Coaches Podcast. I’m your host, Matthew Kimberley, Managing Partner and Head of Licensing, Programming, and Marketing at Book Yourself Solid® Worldwide. I help coaches and small business owners sell more of their amazing services and generate greater profits through strategic business counseling. I have over two decades of experience in international sales and advisory roles and have helped countless solopreneurs, start-ups, and large organizations to scale their businesses beyond their wildest dreams.

In this episode, I dig into who I am, why I decided to start the Marketing for Coaches podcast, and what you can expect from listening to each episode. I discuss what the Book Yourself Solid® program is and how it helps entrepreneurs and solopreneurs attract more clients and grow their service-based organizations. I explain what inspired me to finally launch the Marketing for Coaches podcast and how each episode is designed to help coaches and consultants ‘tip the scales’ to grow their coaching businesses. I also discuss how you can join the Book Yourself Solid® coaching family as well as how you can help co-create future podcast episodes.
