there prequel was boring as well

Very disappointing. I didn't get very far into it as it didn't hold my interest. Then again, there prequel was boring as well. Just not my style of writing.

Not a happy knight life

The story starts off slow and slowly builds to a nice ending. Most of the characters are typical fantasy or medieval tropes. Some characters are there just for laughs which fall flat. But since it is a YA novel it most works.

I laughed alot at the antics of Galen and His brother. Galen tries to keep his brother from blackmailing and killing him. Both like to set their teacher on fire on a regular basis. Add in Dangerous magicians and Jousting Knights and Galen is lucky if he makes it to the end of the week.

I love this book series

What did you love best about The Holmes-Dracula File?

My favorite aspect of this is when you get a chapter from Dracula's point of view and then Watson's point of view. The way they see the same exact situation so drastically different is amusing and surprisingly realistic.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Dracula, naturally. As vicious and predatory as he might be and though he lies often he becomes a likable narrator. Notice the man he supposedly just wanted to disarm. He threw the rock, supposedly it hit the man's wrist, broke the wrist, bounced off and then hit the middle of the man's forehead, creating an in-ward dent and killing him. Rocks don't bounce like that, Dracula! He's clearly lying and it's written cleverly for the reader to catch Dracula's lies, particularly when you realize how differently Watson sees things from Dracula. But Dracula, again, is oddly likable.

What does Robin Bloodworth bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

I like the way Robin Bloodworth provides the voices and the occasional acting delivery that turns the audio book into more of a radio drama than just a reading of a book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

My favorite moment, though not exactly what I'd call moving, is the first confrontation with Sherlock Holmes when Sherlock uses Dracula's resting place to lure him to them.

Any additional comments?

I love this book series. I noticed the series as it is listed on Audibles is missing the final book. Book ten which is A Coldness in The Blood. I hope they eventually remember it. I also noticed Audibles accidentally has two listings for this book series. The New Dracula and New Dracula and for some reason only book 4 onward is in "New Dracula" while all of them are listed in "The New Dracula." Well, all but A coldness in The Blood. I'm concerned about A Coldness in The Blood not being listed. I hope that one gets an audio book release too, also read by Robin Bloodworth.

Anyone else notice how ironic it is that a book series told by Dracula is being read by a man named Bloodworth?

Robin Bloodworth's narration is top notch!

I love this series, and am delighted to see we get to hear Robin's voice through all of them. I so wish it wasn't too late to send a fan letter to Fred Saberhagen.

I love it when a plan comes together!

In this, the 4th book of the Handful of Men series, Duncan pulls it all together, All of the wide spread, separate adventures all come back together.

Some of the story was predictable, some was a complete surprise. But all things considered, it was an EXCELLENT end to a fantastic series.

Each character in this series is dynamic. Everyone's story is exciting, not to mention the overall story. No waiting for the book to get back to an interesting character they were all interesting. Great writing plus awesome narration.

In my top 10 list

I originally read this book after finding it in my local library back in the early 1990's. I ended up purchasing all three books (Son of the Hero, The Hero of Varay, and The Hero King) in paperback soon after. I was recently very pleasantly surprised to find all three available for the Kindle. Rick Shelley does an excellent job with the old destiny in an alternate dimension storyline, giving a fresh feeling. He does it with humor and sarcasm, along with a lot of writing skill. I highly recommend these three books.

My only complaint at all is the somewhat high price of the Kindle edition. At $7.99 each they cost more than a lot of paperbacks. But, better to be available at a slightly expensive price, rather than not being available at all.

Amazing books

I first came upon this series at my local library and fell in love with all three books instantly. Ten years later they still remain my favorite books and hold the most coveted spot on my shelf. I highly recommend them to anyone and everyone. The story line is fantastic and carries smoothly through all three books. I love the main character Gil and enjoyed following his quests into Shelly's strange world. The story line is unique and perfect for anyone who enjoys fantasy novels and timetravel-esque books.

classic adventure of the 1980s

Second in triology. Should be read in order. Nice concept with a little humor. Still relavent, but has the last days of the cold war feel in some ways.

Protip: Do Not take nyquil before narrating a book

I've loved this book since I was a kid (which was a long time ago). Always hoped it would be turned into an audiobook. It's about nerds before the term was invented, who manage to find a way to travel to mythologies through mathematical and logical constructs. There, they encounter the Gods of Myths and have great adventures. Exciting! Wondrous!

Not with this narrator. He doesn't mumble, every word is clearly enunciated. But you get the feel that he thinks he's reading the phone book. They're words that he is reciting. Shea talking about the woman he's involved with, creating the syllogismobile, and fighting giants - and all in the same tone, the tone as in "I went to the market, got some eggs, got some bread".

Fantastic Series, Abysmal Reader

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

No, unfortunately. Though The Compleat Enchanter books are fantastic to read they do not at all come off well under the reigns of Ray Chase. He has a habit of making whatever he reads sound like laundry detergent. His voice is boring, dull, gray and unimaginative. He killed this work. I wish someone like Jim Dale, Frank Mueller or Bronson Pinchot would re-record it as they would bring it to life. Bronson for his tongue in cheek timing, Frank for his truer than true voices and Jim for his believable portrayal of almost any storyline he reads.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Compleat Enchanter?

How much I loathed Reed Chalmers in this reading of the book. He was a pompous, overspoken jerk who needed to be told to "Shut UP!" a lot. I've dealt with academics like him and he wasn't all that great from the get go.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Voice variability. Inflection. Tonality. Pace. Lose the melodrama, in his case it read like the stock pages. I listened to about five things which Ray Chase contributed to. Unlike previously mentioned readers who only get better over time he NEVER IMPROVES. He has the same flat, monotonous painful reading style. He has less variation in his voice work than Wil Wheaton and that's saying something. Wil is actually a pleasure to listen to in comparison to his man's irritating monotone.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Math can take you anywhere.

Please, god, get someone else to take this great classic read and re-record it. I don't like George Guidall but even he would do a better job than Ray Chase. Please stop using this reader, his voice is painful to listen too. I'm saddened that so many people miss the wonderful narrative of this story because of poorly executed reading.

Tanya Huff is one of my favorite fantasy writer

Tanya Huff is one of my favorite fantasy writers. I love her characterizations and her writing style which makes her works a very quick read. Originally I had bought this book in paper format years ago but wanted to re-read it in Kindle format since it is one of my favorite among the Ravenloft series. What I especially appreciates is how she is able to incorporate a great many elements of the game into the narrative especially regarding the use of magic. For some this might be a minor point but for Gamers this means she does understand how D&D in its various incarnations works. As both a Gamer and a Tanya Huff fan I highly recommend this book

My favorite Ravenloft novel ever!!! Well written.

A perfect Ravenloft novel

Scholar of Decay by Tanya Huff sixth book in the recently re-released, and repackaged, Ravenloft the Covenant series. These books were originally published back in the middle nineties, but are now being released in trade paperback with new covers. Before the re-release of these I had read some of them, now I am happy that I will be able to read more of them. If you have never read a Ravenloft novel before, the easiest way to describe them is Dark Fantasy. Or, some may even say fantasy with a sadistic twist. In Ravenloft novels, readers will find many familiar fantasy elements but they will also find darker elements as well.

The main plot of this book centers around the scholar researching a spell to help his wife. The situation of his wife and how she is in the predicament she is in is well explained and provides a good catalyst for the story. There is also a myriad of subplots present as well. There is the relationship between the two brothers Aurek and Dmitri. There is the relationship between a pair of twin sisters and the rest of their family. Actually, in regards to the plot of this book there is so much stuff going on it is almost impossible to list it all here ad not spoil elements of the book itself. The plot is very well laid out and has a very natural flow to it. Ms. Huff quite obviously had a plan she wanted to accomplish with this story, and in my opinion she accomplishes quite a bit and created a very interesting story.

The characters in this book are very well written and add depth to the story. Each character's individual motivations are laid out for the reader to understand, as well as each character's actions are directly influenced by their past and their motivations. It's nice to see characters acting in a certain way not simply because the story says they need to. There are many memorable characters in this novel such as Aurek, Dmitri, Louise, Jacqueline, and too many more to name in this simple review.

A Splendid Conclusion

It's always a pleasure when a seven book series ties itself up so nicely. I also appreciated the great narration throughout.

Good Forgotten Realms Adventure

The story structure was solid, and overall one of the better Realms offerings. The growth of the main character felt a bit manufactured, and the main plot device was a little clunky, but Dave Gross pulled it off enough to keep it engaging. I'm also a fan of this narrator - his character voices are not over the top, like some other Realms narrators. Definitely read the other books in this series before this one. Although not all are as entertaining, this is a good pay off for a predominantly excellent sequence of books.

Best of the series

This is a touching book. It had a continuously thickening plot and kept me listening.i would recommend to all listeners.

Would you listen to The Dream Spheres again? Why?

I would listen to The Dream Spheres again to get more into the story. I felt like I was missing a few motives and characters on the first run through.

What does Eric Michael Summerer bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Eric Michael Summerer has done an excellent job with this series. I have enjoyed listening to his narrations.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I felt the book had a few too many chapters that dragged the story a bit. It would have been nice to focus more on motivations etc.

This book had a makings for greatness. The dream spheres allow for someone to dream a fantasy life of their choosing. Although, the book is about the spheres... very little is spent on the actual dream spheres. Most of the story is spent on family affairs (Danilo's family) and Arilyn's relationship with Danilo.
