    #2 in a terrific series of 7 inner-earth novels
PELLUCIDAR is the second novel in Edgar Rice Burroughs' fabulous series of 7 books concerning the lost world inside a hollow earth and all that dwells therein. Filled with strange fauna, ferocious creatures, and savage peoples, Pellucidar is a timeless world of endless light and perils around every rock. This is the world in which hero David Innes must rescue Princess Dian from the clutches of Hooja the Sly One -- but disoriented during his return to Pellucidar from his trip to the outer surface, he must first relocate her; thus begins his odyssey in a foreign and violent land.
PELLUCIDAR -- also available as a public domain freebie -- follows (#1) AT THE EARTH'S CORE and precedes (#3) TANAR OF PELLUCIDAR. The other books in this series are: (#4) TARZAN AT THE EARTH'S CORE, (#5) BACK TO THE STONE AGE, (#6) LAND OF TERROR, and (#7) SAVAGE PELLUCIDAR. The books were written intermittently from about 1913 to 1944 (though the last story among the four tales that constitute volume 7 was not published until 1963), so characters will (to some extent) reflect the social conventions, attitudes, and prejudices of the early 20th century. But even if occasionally politically incorrect by today's standards, they are still great adventures and harmless fun.
ERB was a natural storyteller who developed fantastic series in such varied settings as Africa, the moon, Mars, Venus, the lost continent of Caspak, and Pellucidar. As much as I enjoyed them all, the Pellucidar series was (and still remains) my favorite. All 7 books in this series are highly entertaining and enjoyable, but it's best to read them in order. A set of all 7 is currently offered by Estar under the title ADVENTURES IN PELLUCIDAR.
    A Classic
I read this as a boy and enjoyed it still.
    great reading from ERB
    As always...great reading from ERB.

    Title: Grass for His Pillow
Subtitle: Tales of the Otori, Book 2

    Narrator: Aiko Nakasone, Kevin Gray
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 10 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-26-17
    Publisher: Macmillan Digital Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 6 votes
Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Epic
    Publisher's Summary:
Grass for His Pillow is the second novel in Lian Hearn's astonishingly beautiful series inspired by feudal Japan, Tales of the Otori.
In the ancient Oriental lands of the Otori, amidst a time of violent war, famine and treacherous alliances, the fate of the young lovers Otori Takeo and Shirakawa Kaede hangs in the balance....
Takeo, heir to the great Otori clan, has pledged his life to the secret Tribe. His supernatural skills of virtual invisibility and acute hearing make him their most deadly assassin. But he must deny the solemn oath of vengeance he made, his adopted birthright of wealth, land and power - and his love for Kaede. If he does not devote himself entirely to the brutal ways of the Tribe, they will kill him. Whichever path he chooses, it will lead to hardship and sacrifice in the bitter winter of the high mountains and test him to the limits of his being.
Kaede, heiress to vast lands, is now the valuable pawn of ruthless warlords. She must use her intelligence, beauty and cunning to assert her place in a world of all-powerful men - who must never suspect the dangerous secret she hides.
    Critic Reviews:
"The beauty, savagery and strangeness of Hearn's gripping tale is heightened by her exquisite, crystalline prose. The second instalment in the Tales of the Otori is, astonishingly, even better than Across the Nightingale Floor." (Independent on Sunday)
    Members Reviews:
Very much in the style of the first book; but I found myself getting bored.
This is the second book in the Tales of the Otori series by Lian Hearn. This book picks up where the first left off. Takeo leaves Kaede for training under the mysterious Tribe; whose supernatural abilities Takeo has inherited from his father. As his training concludes, and he is asked to take out certain missions, he must ask himself if his loyalties will lie with the Tribe or with the Otori? Kaede meanwhile is left on her own to return home and see what state her family is in. Kaede struggles to consolidate her power and claim the inheritance she was left in a world that is run by men.
This was a fitting second book for this series. It moved along at the steady, descriptive pace of the second book. Although for some reason I found myself getting bored while reading this book. The lush descriptions, while detailed, didn't bring the book to life in the way I hoped they would. I had a little trouble understanding some of the stupid decisions made by Kaede and Takeo along the way. Despite these misgivings, if you liked the first book you must read the second book. It is very much in the same style of the first book and continues the story of Kaede and Takeo. This book definitely builds to a climax preparing you for the war and conflict of the third novel.
    A must read!
Grass for His Pillow is the continuation of the Tales of the Otori series about young Takeo. This book resumes where Book One, Across the Nightingale Floor ends. Thankfully, the story continues. The vivid descriptions, the mental portrayal of the scenery in which young Takeo & the heroine, Lady Kaede Shirakawa, find themselves, is vibrant and real. Lian Hearn takes a known world (Japan) and crafts another world just like it in which to set his story. There are many wonderful moments in this story and to tell them here would only lessen the experience.

  • The World of the Rings Audiobook by Jared C. Lobdell

Title: The World of the Rings
Subtitle: Language, Religion, and Adventure in Tolkien
    Author: Jared C. Lobdell
    Narrator: Stuart Appleton
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 10 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-29-16
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Epic
    Publisher's Summary:
Jared Lobdell examines Tolkien's methods and his worldview by following the thread of three influences: the Edwardian adventure story, the science of philology, or comparative languages, and Roman Catholic theology. The "Edwardian mode" of adventure story (King Solomon's Mines, The Lost World) is one in which a small group of Englishmen make an expedition to foreign parts and find supernatural terrors awaiting them, finally returning home, mission accomplished. The architecture and narrative style of these adventure stories is followed completely in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien's towering erudition in ancient Germanic and Celtic languages helps to explain his successful use of a mixture of period styles in his storytelling, as well as his amazing facility coining memorable names. Although Tolkien's stories betray a strong Christian conception of virtue and suffering, his Catholic background raises difficult problems for understanding the tales, with their heroes who are basically irreligious. Lobdell pursues many subtle clues to arrive at a balanced answer.

    Not my style
I cannot recommend this book. I did not enjoy it, and found its style largely rambling (poorly written), and making few points of interest to me. If you have a deep background in English literature or linguistics, this book may be of interests to you, provided of course you are a Tolkien fan. For the rest of us who are neither, I would recommend instead the works of Ralph C. Wood "The Gospel According to Tolkien"The Gospel According to Tolkien: Visions of the Kingdom in Middle-earthor Richard Purtill's "J.R.R. Tolkiien: Myth, Morality and Religion."The J.R.R. Tolkien: Myth, Morality, and ReligionI preferred Wood to Purtill, but both are informative, and in my mind much more engaging and clearly written than this work. There are a few interesting insights here, but amidst too much empty and rambling verbiage.
    Short, but sweet
Most of the books that I've read about LotR that have come out sine the release of the films have been very long winded. None of them say anything original or substantial and tend to feel like a "dumbies guide". Mr. Lobdell's book isn't that long, but it really makes you think and touches on some interesting topics that other authors haven't (because they're too busy rehashing the same old things that every one else has been talking about).
I also really appriciate that Mr. Lobdell doesn't dumb down his language for his reader. When authors dumb down their language, I always have a feeling that they're talking down to me (which I don't appreciate). In this book, where a big word is meant, it's used, and it isn't substituted for a smaller, dumber word. As a result, I feel like I'm being "talked" to, instead of "talked" at.
A Loving Look At Middle Earth
This book was originally published ca 1980 as England and Always. I have not seen the original so I can't tell how much of this book is new material (beyond a chapter dealing with Peter Jackson's films). Lobdell has examined Tolkien's writings from several interesting and unusual perspectives. One of the most interesting deals with the influence of Edwardian adventure fiction (Haggard, etc.) on Tolkien.

    good story. subpar narrator.
The book was interesting. Both the world and premise leave a lot of potoential for this series. My only complaint about the story is that all the women the protagonist meets seems as easy as Bond girls.
The naration was not very good. I nearly stopped listening in the first few minutes because of it. That would have been a shame too because it an interesting book.
    another good book bad narrator
I read a lot of books, and listen to a lot of books do you self a favor read the book first. the narrator wasn't as bad as the worst of them but he's close. it makes you realize that good narrators are hard to come by. I won't get the next if it's the same narrator. the book is OK but I can't tell until I read the next book. again I blame the narrator. lol
    A great fantasy.
Equal ballance of character, plot and story. Friends on adventure and new horizons. Looking forward to the next.
fun book, but the reader drones
play this book at 1.2 it makes the narrator more tolerable
I realy enjoy the story and I can't wait for more
    Meh
Robotic narration and juvenile cliched dialog sink what were some otherwise decent world building. probably wont be continuing the series.

Stick With It - It's Worth it!!!
The beginning was tedious for me and had I been reading I would have skimmed through alot of the day to day details however the pace does get better and I found myself hanging on every word. Tessana is such a tortured soul and the way CJ McAllister narrates her and the others truly brings the story to life. At the core everyone is just trying to do what is right for their loved ones but life is messy and not easy and this story reflects that very well. I am eager to find out what happens next in the series. I would definitely purchase other books narrated by CJ McAllister. I was given this free review copy at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Broke my heart, even rereading it!
I first fell in love with David Dalglish's novels when I stumbled upon a Trilogy offered on Kindle. The set was the first three of the half-orc series, these novels here. I knew that the story was setting us up for something huge later on in the series and this was the breaking of the bonds section. This was the novel that would show where the characters would go from their humble beginnings. So that meant some heartbreak was in order. I'm trying not to give spoilers but I will say this novel broke my heart the first time reading it and it broke it again listening to it this time.
I will say that I prefer the narrator from David's shadowdance series. I grew to love the voice is he gave some of my favorite characters. now that some of them appear in this novel, their voices are different, and that was slightly disappointing. I grew used to the new narrator though.
I have yet to read any novel by David dalglish that disappointed me. I highly recommend any of his books, especially his shadow dance series.
    Qurrah's emo girlfriend is annoying...
I feel the first part of the book could have been skipped. Hurraq's relationship could have been fast forward through instead of describing it in agonizing detail. we already know from the first book that they love each other. Qurrah's girl friend was annoying. she came off like a edgy teen saying extreme shit just to disgust normies. for a while, I was waiting for someone to tell her she is a liar. The way she talked about her trauma made it sound made up.
    Good book!
Interesting characters abound! Good fantasy novel with some interesting twists. Takes a bit to get into, but a great story. Worth a credit.
This book was provided at no cost for a fair and honest review.
    Cringeworthy story
Not nearly as good or polished as his Shadowdance series. I'd suggest going there instead.

A New Branch to the Rowne Locke Story
    Any additional comments?
Rowen Locke has struggled to keep the peace between all races since the end of the War of the Lotus 3 years earlier. But people are quick to forget how magic, the Shelai, and others brought peace, it is easier to remember the old hatreds. Then there is a new Shelai called Algol that has plans to bring down this world. Algol has partnered with Crovis Ammerhel and is planning on bringing down the Dragonward and return the dragonkin to this world. But Rowen Locke, Maddoc, Igrid, and others are going to do whatever they can to keep that from happening.
Rowen is doing his best to protect those that he loves, even though everyone else seems to be against him. But he is loyal and determined, even if he is arrested, falsely imprisoned, beaten, and threatened to be executed. I loved Igrid, she is strong and determined and wont quit no matter what. You can tell that she loves Rowen deeply although I think she was going to kill him. Algol is a powerful Sheai and has his own history but he is willing to do whatever it takes to bring back Nekiel.

    Betrayal's Price
When I first got this audio book, I was not so sure I'd enjoy it! I was wrong, I loved it, so much in fact that I went back to buy the others. The cover is actually what initially drew me to the book, but the fast moving and unexpected twists and turns kept me totally engrossed and guessing, until the very end. Shiromi Arserio did an excellent job in narrating this paranormal, adventurous love story. I love listening to the audio books as well as reading the ebook since it helps me know the proper enunciation of the places and characters names. Lisa Blackwood is a master at weaving an exciting, intriguing, story with well developed and personable characters. I'd have no qualms what so ever in recommending this book to others. I was quite pleasantly surprised and did not want to put it down until the end.

    Awesome new world.
But that doesn't really cover it because its just an amazing story and wonderful all around.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I loved all of them and the details Lisa gives and just how she made such a wonderful book.
Which character as performed by Shiromi Arserio was your favorite?
It it too hard to choose who I liked best from her performance because she did such an amazing job and conveyed everyone's emotions perfectly
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

One man from each of the 12 provinces are chosen by the royal council to pledge their lives and swords as champions and consorts of the future queen. From these men, Cara must choose the future king of Elbia. Before she is able to take her place on the throne, Cara and her 12 must visit each province and perform a sacred ceremony, one that will make Cara question everything she thought was real.
Cara soon realizes that not all of the men who swore to protect her are what they seem, and that there are those who would use her as a tool to gain power.
Cara's Twelve is a refreshingly different, romantic fantasy story of fair maidens and fearless warriors in a medieval land.

    Very Unique Fantasy
The story was very unique and different than anything I have previously listened to. It was interesting and kept my attention.
I was not too sure how this story was going to hold my attention but there are quite a few twists and exciting moments and I enjoyed it quite a bit.
If you only like monogamous fantasy romances, this is NOT the book for you. Cara starts right off with 12 consorts! She has 2 years to travel to each of their hometowns and commit herself to their people and chosen consort. After her tour, she will be crowned the queen of the 12 provinces.
All 12 men chosen by the provinces swear loyalty to her and are supposed to be her protectors and consorts but not everything is as it seems. Not all men plan on keeping their vows...
While on tour, an uprising starts and her life and the life of her consorts hangs in the balance. There is a traitor trying to overthrow the current council and change the way things are done.
The narrator did an awesome job bringing the story to life. The story did not turn out how I expected it and I'm hoping for a book 2! There were several misunderstandings and decisions were made by Cara that really surprised me. I'm looking forward to a continuation of this tale!

A very powerful story about justice and treason
    Any additional comments?
I have received a copy of this book in audio format from the narrator in exchange for an honest review. The reign of Elbia, composed by twelve provinces, is reigned by a despotic queen, who oppresses her people with very high taxes. Cara lives in one of the poorest provinces, and she does not see eye to eye with the queen nor believes in the goddess Annul. One day she receives communication that her cousin Maeve, princes and heiress to the throne, has been found barren and therefore rejected as future queen; and so the crown will fall then upon Cara, being her the next in the dynastic lineage. She will have twelve consorts, one from each province, and they all together will have to travel to the twelve provinces on a tour that will last for two years, performing in each place a traditional rite which will change Cara's vision of things.
