Spy - Priest - Swordman

I am not sure why but this book feeling like (at least to me) "The Curse of Chalion" by Lois McMaster Bujold. I am not totally sure why but it does.

The story is actually a story with characters that are under the authors control;that are developed and are distinct. The characters see the world differently - the author actually make this part of the plot, have different weakness and feel complete. A young man in his 30s - self conference (maybe a little too much); a world weary woman; a late teen far from home and his culture.

The "magic" I think is most where I get the feel of Chalion from in this book. It brushes with God swooping in but it works.

This isn't a book of war; of the end of the world or of DOOM but rather excitement on a scale that is believable. There is evil to be fought but it wants control not the death of the world.

Wil Damron gives a strong Narration - I would buy another book he read.

It starts out slow, but then draws you in...

This is a great book! It took a while to fully engage me, but it was worth the wait. It just got better and better and the end of the story left me wanting more...so many cliffhangers at the end of the book. I enjoyed the storyso much that I already have the second book downloaded and I'm going to start listening to it as soon as I finish this review. The narrator was excellent! This will be one of the books that I'll listen to again sometime. It has an interesting magic system, but if your looking for witches or wizards you won't find them here, but this story certainly has a magic system that is very unique, and refreshing.

Lacking

I'm writing this review because I plan to return the book and I'm not able to review afterwards. I found this book difficult to listen to. It started very slowly and although after a bit it picked up I found other things I didn't like. Now have caution - I'll be putting in some spoilers here - you have been warned. My main issue was with Saker and princess Mathilde. I spent the whole start of the "relationship" thinking what an idiot he was and then after he was arrested calling him even more of an idiot for being so naive. I have no idea how he can be a spy and be so blind to another person's nature. Really he didn't seem to be a very good spy in a multitude of ways.

Loved the Series, Hated the Ending

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

No... I feel the ending was horrible, almost a betrayal of storyteller/ listener bond. Hated it.

What could Dorothy Hearst have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Alter the ending. She could easily have maintained the ending she wrote with a little more exposition, giving the reader more sense of closure in regards to the other vital characters.

Which character as performed by Justine Eyre was your favorite?

I love all of Justine Eyre's characters. She is wonderful.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me want to hurl my device through the window of my car. I was THAT angry. The ending was, frankly, awful... A horrible thing to do to readers who have given years of time and hard earned cash to an otherwise great series.

Heart Warming and Heart Breaking

The endless twist and turns in this story's plot will weave heart strings from the hearts of the characters to your heart.

I enjoyed the first two books in the series. This third and final installment leaves something to be desired. It started off compelling and I was pulled in and interested. However, the later chapters in book begin to spiral downward into something that leaves the reader/listener disapointed. Overall, it feels unsatifying. The book introduces a number of new characters, plot developments that go largely unresolved. Basically, the lead character just seems to get shit on more and more.

Good Story, but lose the dramatic production.

The voice was good, but the dramatic (sound effects, background music) production was annoying. Once I got use to it, I could follow the story.

The story was actually pretty interesting. It took a new angle albeit with a common theme (the unwilling protagonist). I would advise the author to lose the dramatic production on the following books in the series.

Not an audio book, its got bad music and effects.

TECHNICAL: No notable sound quality problems. But the title has constant background music and effects that are atrocious.

PERFORMANCE: Didnt like his voice. Performance was ripe with terrible over acting.

STORY/AUTHORCRAFT: Life is short; discontinued after 5 minutes as it would have been 14+hours Id never get back. So very glad it was a bargain bin offering.

Would you consider the audio edition of Blood in Snow to be better than the print version?

I only listened to the audio. The narrator did a good job. Splendid inflection in his voice. Good characterizations.

Who was your favorite character and why?

From the series, Kravel was my favorite but he was not in this book that much. I'm told that he's going to have his own series coming out soon. Can't wait! Favorite character from this book--dear, lovable Edmund, of course. Strong-willed Abby. Wonderfully flawed Pond. But King Lionel really stole the show for me. Very funny. An ass with a soft side.

What does Fleet Cooper bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Absolutely.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Oh!! Many but can't give away the plot. The end scene had a little bit of everything--bittersweet, excitement for the future, mystery. It doesn't wrap things up into a neat bow. There are many unanswered questions that give you plenty to think about until the next books.

Almost forgot to mention Vin. Wonderful scenes with him. And when Ed confronts the town. I nearly cried.

I want more!!! Can't wait until Kravel's story comes out and hopefully Abby!

Touching End and New Beginnings

Would you listen to Blood in Snow again? Why?

Absolutely. Fleet Cooper did a terrific job. The characters had a variety of different "sounds" so they didn't all sound the same or variations of the same actor.

What did you like best about this story?

The humor ("The only thing revolting is your court jester"--loved that line.) Also how things unfolded in a different way than expected.

Which scene was your favorite?

The sword fight at the Stone of Death where "Lord Somebody beat the other person." LOL. Also, the great battle scene with the armies. It's one of the only battle scenes where I felt like I was there. It wasn't overwritten or bogged down by too many details.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The very last scene seemed so real for me. I could really feel for Edmond on so many levels. The heartbreak and joy... I really hope there's more after this.

I wish there were more goblins. I missed Kravel and Gurding's witty banter.

Yes. I like how personal the story feels, that the scale of the story is manageable, and that it's just plain fun!

What other book might you compare Blood in Snow to and why?

I think there are smatterings of other books in here as far as the story and characters go...but the 'voice' of the book is pretty unique.

A few more voices, and a bit more emotion, and the narrator will do well. He just needs experience. I get the impression that the book was written for a younger audience. a safe story that a publisher would buy to fill his printing quota.

Character is too stuck on his first love interest

The character never gets past his jealousy and it kinda ruined the book for me. The main character couldn't stop whining and wallowing in self pity which destroyed what over wise seemed like a good book. As long as you can get past what I couldn't the book is very interesting.

Don't fall down the pit

I think younger listeners might enjoy this, but overall, its not worth the credits.

Avoid getting started with the series. The storyline has some interest, but the reading and remaining elements of the story are weak. Maybe with more practice the author can improve with time, but the first two books are worth side stepping for awhile.

Remarkably beautiful and bbitter sweet.

Anything I write does not do justice to the months spent reading the world Cassandra has created through the inferno devices and Immortal instruments. I never knew what to expect when pressing the play button on Clockwork Angel and again for City of Bones. Completely blown away and pleasantly surprised each time. A huge bar has been set and itll be difficult to find a new series that can measure up. Ill miss the Harendales, Lightwoods, Fairchilds, Simon and Magness plus the many who played a part in such an stunning read, well definitely not Sebastian. That dude creeps me out and gave me nightmares. For every truly good comes the deeply evil. Its kinda sad and bitter sweet to say goodbye. Goes to show how great of an author Cassandra is to create such characters yu come to love, hate and be irritated by. I laughed, cried, nearly punched the player and cheered over and over. Brilliant night time reading! Looking forwad to Emmas story in the upcoming series The Dark Artifices. Yeah!!!

A little too much information but well written

I think this book had a little more information than needed. I am sure Cassandra Clare had in mind the sequel already in her mind, and probably that is the reason of the introduction of new characters. But in my opinion, that is pointless when talking about the last book in one series.

Anyway, a part from the new characters, this book finishes every story ever started and it flows very fasts.

Also really enjoyed the narration with enthusiasm, which is always a plus for audiobooks.

Good story ruined by a crap narrator. Again.

Loved the book, shame it had to end, but baffled as to why Oxer was used again. Found myself groaning and covering my ears every time she comes on. When you switch narrators at least ask that they learn the pronociations of names etc from the previous books, and can pronounce the words, domestic and foreign, required. Perhaps the recording of this book was rushed and not checked properly for mistakes, who knows.
