Great book at a greatly needed time...
I loved this book and how it was able to pull my mind into the book, as well as visualize the story as I was listening to it.
I found the series at the perfect time I needed help to find something to do us on that would pull my mind off the spinal pain I have when my injections wear off and leave me bed ridden in severe agony. This series was Awsome at doing that. I keep repeating the series & focusing on them when played.
Really, really can't wait until the future books come out. This author has real talent when it comes to writing great, Awsome reads.
    Adictive
I cannot wait for the next book. I'm listening one after another. I love the series....
Good. But, there are too many characters.
Okay, So this series started out amazing. It is still good to a point. Because, there are a million characters which is causing the stories to get confusing and annoying. I think the narrator said they are up to 35 characters now.. Way to many people to keep track of.
Also, the action scenes are sparse due to the intros of all these additional new characters. I am now on book 8 and there are even more being added. Sigh... I am going to have to give up on this series after book 9 since it is getting more confusing and aggravating that it is fun and enjoyable.
As for the narration. It is absolutely amazing! Couldn't have a better narrator than Emily Beresford doing this series. She is superb.
    excellent
once again Michael and Emily hit it out of the park. I can not wait book 8. chop chop Emily.
Tap a vein these books are that food
I read all genres but lately have been into urban fantasy more than the others. Mr. Anderle's books are every bit as good as what was my top 3 (Dresden Files, Anita Blake and Demon accords). The people that know me know how serious a statement that is. Sir you are one of the greats!!! Thank you for putting these out I have read all of them and own all the audio books as well. The narrator Emily Beresford is also one of the greats.

    Another hit
Once again Emily, brings life to all of our favorite characters. I love the way she brings such energy to these books.
I absolutely love this series, keep them coming pl
well written, hilariously funny, and Emily truly brings the Characters to life. one thing that truly helps an audiobook is not the authors writing style necessarily period but the narration and the person chose to do that. If that person does not have the right type of characteristics or vocal patterns the characters fall flat and so does the book Emily guess what you have the proper vocal patterns as well as the ability to make all the characters come to life different accents different vocal patterns it's awesome thank you and everybody like you for what you do. I'm visually impaired and I can't read anymore so you guys really bring the books to life for me I appreciate it and I'm sure everybody else does. As for you Michael keep writing the characters and I'll keep reading the books. as well as recommending them to every person in my life who doesn't mind a little exuberant as well as imaginative cussing LOL.
Another great book in the series
I have been having a great time with this series. As the author says, it is not great literature but it is a great story. The writing can be a little bit cliche but the imagination and pace of the story make for a really enjoyable experience. I can hardly wait to start the next book. The narration is also excellent. There are a lot of characters to keep track of and the voices that the reader has created makes the books that much more enjoyable. AUDIBLE 20 REVIEW SWEEPSTAKES ENTRY
    Well Read
The reader really enjoys the characters and the story, which helps the listener look past weakness in the writing. It moves well and is an interesting, if somewhat workmanlike, extension of the series. AUDIBLE 20 REVIEW SWEEPSTAKES ENTRY
    Wild Ride
I loved this book. I am a dyed in the wool fan. this book had me from the first line.

    Publisher's Summary:
Captain Keyes is loved by the public but hated by Command. He captains the UHS Providence, an aging supercarrier and the last human ship not dependent on dark tech - technology humanity has used to rule over the galaxy since barely defeating the Ixa in the First Galactic War.
Dominance has come at a cost. Over the decades, old allies have grown resentful, and when dark tech itself fails, Captain Keyes's predictions start coming true: those old allies are now enemies.
But Keyes is not the only one proven right. As the galaxy plunges into war, the Ixan Prophecies are being fulfilled, one by one. Humanity's oldest enemy is on the rise, with weaponry never seen before.
The fate of the galaxy now depends on Captain Keyes, his tired ship, and his oddball crew. It doesn't pay to be right.

Was completely lost and didn't care.
Normally I have no issues with any book's. But found this one hard to follow. Even restarted halfway through, thinking it was me. It wasn't. I was still lost and didn't care about anyone in the book.
    I didn't get the hook...
The synopsis read like it would be great but somehow I didn't catch on or get hooked. I fell asleep listening to this book 4 different times & cannot remember the main characters name even to this day...
Maybe you'll like it but for me it was "meh."
    Excellent multi-faceted character creations
A somewhat flippant, recently demoted 1st lieutenant who is the son of an infamous traitor father. A quirky captain of the lone human massive starship that doesn't use dark tech for worm hole travel. A no-nonsense marine sergeant who becomes delusional after experiencing her own death through an invasive mind control simulation. A bipedal fighter-jock bird species called Wingers along with an almost prescient fish-like species called ... wait for it ... Fin. These and other make for a highly entertaining cast as they attempt to save the galaxy from the end times predicted in the Ixan Prophecies.
    Liberal Indoctrination Run Amok
Unless you're completely stupid you'll recognize the thinly veiled liberal propaganda infused into this book. If you're a conservative it will rankle throughout. It has the obligatory "evil corporation" that will "sacrifice humanity" just for more profits. The "rebels" are the good guys fighting against the "corrupt government" doing the dark bidding of said evil corporation. The female version of a Trump-esque "xenophobic" politician that wins on a "humans first" political platform. There is the complex Ixan alien race which are clearly the Muslims and the race if falcon-people aliens that = the down-trodden "minorities." (They're even a badd-ass fighting Matriarchy to keep the feminists happy). And their compatriot-race the all-wise fish-people. Some environmentalist rhetoric is tossed in for good measure. Sssssnnnnnzzzzzzzz.
The writing is okay though a bit overly dramatic. However, my eyes are worn out from rolling so much at every leftist idealogical cliché trotted out. Truly tiresome.
It is likely most SF authors I like hold left-leaning political views, but they don't usually parade them throughout their work as this writer does.

    Publisher's Summary:
Last voyage, Captain Maddox entered a distant star system with a Swarm fleet. The sheer numbers were staggering, a 100-1 advantage against all human spacecraft. If the highly aggressive, racist insects gained hyper-spatial tube technology - allowing them to cross 1,000 light-years in seconds - it would mean Armageddon for Earth.
Star Watch desperately needs something powerful to offset the annihilating Swarm numbers. As if on cue, Professor Ludendorff declares he has discovered the whereabouts of ancient Builder technology, a tech so potent it could defeat the Swarm.
Star Watch takes the bait, ordering Captain Maddox to find the lost planet holding the ancient technology.
Ludendorff has a plan involving androids to lure his arch rival - Methuselah Man Strand - to his doom.
The crew of Starship Victory knows nothing of this, and thus blindly enters a web of intrigue and danger. The captain will need the AI Galyan, Valerie, and Riker like never before. Humanity's hope against the coming Swarm holocaust rests on the outcome.
The Lost Planet is the sixth book in the Lost Starship series.

    Downward Slope
I have very much enjoyed the series thus far, and Boyette continues to excel in this latest installment. The Lost Planet, however, loses some marks this time around. Where the previous books had grand scope and hidden intrigues, this one seemed only contrived as we witnessed - once again - Strand's uncanny ability to read the author's mind.
The Lost Planet also departs from the feeling of an epic space adventure as a large majority of Maddox's time is spent planetside employing gun barrel diplomacy. Although, it is nice to see Valerie finally get her chance to shine. Perhaps that was the author's intent.
The Lost Planet does entertain, for what it's worth. Maddox is his usual brusque, no-nonsense self. We meet a new alien species, and, like usual, things aren't all gumdrops and ice cream.
In the end, this book seems like a bridge. Simply there to connect two more important pieces. Wether that's the case can only be determined in the next release.
    The Lost Planet
This was a good listen/read, Maddox and his crew continue to evolve. Can't wait until the next book for the battle against the sworn.
    Best Captain Maddox story yet
Would you consider the audio edition of The Lost Planet to be better than the print version?
I thoroughly enjoy switching from reading to listening, different experiences but both equally good for Heppner books
Who was your favorite character and why?
Captain Maddox, although strong and brilliant, and self-confident, he's very much aware of his humanity. Others see his self-confidence as arrogance, but the reader gets to see the self-doubts and fear that he deals with. Heroes are much more interesting than superheroes, and Heppner holds out the constant threat of failure for all of his heroes -- you know that Maddox will pull through, but it is as much because of his values as his strength and intelligence.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Near the end when Maddox meets with Darius.

Five Star Review But Be Warned
What made the experience of listening to Mass Effect™ Andromeda: Nexus Uprising the most enjoyable?
The writing and the performance is top notch. The fact that we meet these characters while playing Mass Effect Andromeda adds to it.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Sloane Kelly.
Have you listened to any of Fryda Wolffs other performances before? How does this one compare?
It compares well. I think she did the most recent Brett Battles book but am not sure.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, ideally BEFORE playing Mass Effect Andromeda
    Any additional comments?
This book gets five stars from me because it's the highest caliber writing and performance. Here the thing it's a prequel for Mass Effect Andromeda the video game. It's the missing backstory to the game that we hear about as we meet the characters in this book but don't get to see play out because it happens in the past.
The warning in my title refers to the fact that at the end of the novel it has the feel of setting up a future series of books. The problem with that is that those books will never be published as the story will continue and conclude in the video game Mass Effect Andromeda and perhaps forthcoming DLC. Worse the all of the main characters here are seen from the point of view of Ryder and have very limited screen time in the video game. As long as you are okay with all that, and I was, you're in for a very good time with this one.
    Engaging
Fryda Wolfe has excellent pace and inflection in her voice. This book really fills in some gaps in the game's narrative and makes me care about the characters. I'm genuinely looking forward to diving deeper into this new galaxy.
Not Even a Great Narrator Can Save This
Fryda Wolff is an excellent narrator and voice actor. She succeeds in making Sloane and the rest of the characters come alive. You can actually hear the angry weariness in Sloane Kelly's voice, the manic depressive nature of Director Addison and the calculating obliviousness of Director Tann. The narrator does a fantastic job, but at the end of the day, these characters are simply not believable in their jobs or even likable and that kills the book.
The story is depressing. Sloane Kelly is particularly unlikable as a main character and unbelievable as head of security. At least the other department heads have the excuse that their superiors died in an unexpected accident. Sloane Kelly is actually in the job she was supposed to have and handles it by going on a hike to clean up some debris in a hangar leaving her second in command to handle things.

A new vision of the future from Kim Stanley Robinson, the New York Times best-selling author of science-fiction masterworks such as the Mars trilogy, 2312, and Aurora.
The waters rose, submerging New York City.

Every street became a canal. Every skyscraper an island.
Through the eyes of the varied inhabitants of one building, Kim Stanley Robinson shows us how one of our great cities will change with the rising tides.
And how we, too, will change.
    Members Reviews:
    Complex, believable, nuanced, riveting
I totally disagree with the couple of negative reviews I'm seeing. If by "science fiction" you require aliens, supernatural powers, technologies made of unobtanium, or epic space battles, I guess you'd be disappointed. There's no "The One" character on a mission to save the Earth or the Universe here. But if you think of it as a mature genre, capable of creating a solid, 3-dimensional world set a century-plus hence, with characters whose lives revolve around real-world concerns and who speak and act the way real people do, then you'll really appreciate this book. The depiction of a semi-drowned New York is drilled into a bedrock of historical fact producing a solidly convincing sense of place that is the setting for a complex web of characters, motivations and completely plausible plot threads.
The performances are also among the best I've heard, and I'm not normally a huge fan of the multi-narrator approach but it works here. I was slightly amused to find, well into the book, that the character played by a reader who sounds African American, at least to my ear, turns out to be blond-haired, but to me the casting made him more interesting so I decided the author was wrong and continued to imagine him that way.
Just a first-rate read all around. Highest recommendation.
    Everything but the kitchen sink
is in hereclimate change, extinction of animals, the economic divide between people, finance (pretty sure Robinson read The Big Short), fictional and non-fictional history of New York Same goes with the wide variety of characters.
This was my first Robinson novel and will probably be my last. Half I listened to carefully, half with half an ear. There was just too much of everything in this novelexcept character development. It took a looooong time for me to have any feeling for any of the charactersexcept Amelia. She was really the star of the show, and I probably liked her so much because her parts were funny and were a nice break from a lot of exposition, pontification, etc. etc. So while the topics of the book are right up my alley, the execution was somewhat lacking.
In the end, Id say it was just ok. The audio narrators, for the most part, were great!
    Not for me
Sadly, I didnt enjoy this book that much. I felt it was one of those cases where the idea of the story is better than the story itself.
It wasnt all bad, some storyline (or parts of storylines) were ok, but it all felt cluttered and jumpy. In addition, I never really cared about anyone and therefore it was hard to get into their stories.

    Publisher's Summary:
A new adventure by the author of the best-selling Crimson Worlds and Far Stars series.
The Confederation has fought three wars against the forces of the totalitarian Union. Three generations of its warriors have gone off to war, held the line against the larger, more powerful enemy. Now the fourth conflict is imminent, and the Confederation's navy is on alert, positioned behind the frontier, waiting for the attack it knows is coming.
The battleship Dauntless has spent the past 10 months patrolling the border, deployed far forward of the main fleet, a forlorn hope, an advance guard positioned to give the warning of invasion. But no attack has come. Her crew is exhausted, and the aging battleship needs maintenance. With the fleet mobilized and the forward bases overloaded beyond capacity, she is sent clear across the Confederation, to a planet along the quiet and peaceful far frontier. Her crew is looking forward to a rest, and Dauntless herself is scheduled for a long-overdue maintenance session.
But the quiet frontier isn't what it seems, and when a distress call is received from one of the mining colonies on the edge of Confederation space, it falls to Captain Tyler Barron to take Dauntless forward, to find out what is happening, and to put a stop to it.
Barron and his crew have their ship - and each other - but they can expect no other help. Suspicion is strong that Union deceit is at play, that the attack is some sort of diversion intended to draw Confederation forces from the disputed border. The orders are clear. No ships will be transferred from the prospective battle line. Stopping whatever is happening on the rim is Barron's responsibility and his alone.
Barron is the grandson of the Confederation's great hero, the father of the modern navy. His family name has always carried privilege with it - and crushing responsibility. And now he must prove that he has inherited more from his famous grandfather than name and privilege. He must face the enemy and win the victory before the Confederation is caught between two enemies and destroyed.

    Slow slow slow
I can appreciate character building but something has to happen at some point to hold your interest. I made it 3hrs without much happening. There are so many better titles. I'm asking for a refund I couldn't finish tho one.
    backwards thinking
I wasnt impressed. The tactics utilized are. idiotic at best. Early in the ship battle he mentions torpedo tubes, but then never uses them. The so called honorable commander keeps his crew and himself at general quarters living on stims for days at a time with apparently no degradation of their performance, unless you count the complete lack of tactical thinking throughout the book as a result of this stupidity. As pointed out by another reviewer the main characters are generic and almost carbon copies of each other. Besides all that the author seems not only to have his characters commit atrocities, and to do things detrimental to morale and the lives of their crews, but he seemingly whole heartedly endorses their actions. If this is his notion of a good commander he's obviously never spoken to a real service member. To top it all off he's very generic in his physics concept, and the ships are bland and unremarkable aside from their size.

    Great book
Finally a real sci fi original story. Seems like all we get today are war stories rewritten as space
Opera's. most are continued and don't have real endings that make you think. Nice to read an exception. Where are our new sci fi writers? Many of the great names have passed and I don't see them being replaced. Don't let this one go by without reading.
    A Fun story!
Done in the old gum shoe detective style, this is a lot of fun. There are a lot of technology gadgets. You like the characters. There's more than enough action. I hope the author can find a way to make a sequel. A fun story.
WISHING WASN'T GOING TO HELP ME NOW
    BACK SEAT ALIEN
    B. V. Larson and Vaughn Heppner are not the same guy, but they are interchangeable. If you like one, you will like the other. Even though they are different guys, they did go to different schools together. This hits the ground crashing and the action is non stop. Character development and plot are totally missing. I like Heppner's invasion of America series, but I could only take three hours of this. Heppner does not have a talking beer can, but he does have a talking crystal, with a British accent. Both are good at hacking into the bad guys communications. You know what you like, I hope I have given you enough to make a decision, aren't I helpful?
YOU ARE THE ACTIVE UNIT, I AM THE CONTROL UNIT
    A Fun Read
This was my first audible book and so the experience was a little different than sitting down and reading the story. It was a very entertaining story of you like science fiction. A little corny in parts, but that could've been the narration. Would I recommend it? Sure, I'll even look for some other books by this writer.
Fun, fast paced space alien adventure.
    Any additional comments?
If you like BV Larson's Starforce series and the main character Kyle Riggs then you'll enjoy this book too. It's everything you'd expect from a fun space opera. I hope it's the first in a new series.

Contents: PG 13. No sex, lots of F-bombs (marines), no religious cussing, several ship-to-ship battles and close-quarters combat. There is obviously death, but nothing too grisly. The violence does not feel gratuitous. The tone of the series is fairly upbeat and heartwarming, but serious, not frivolous.
I've heard all three books in the series and am looking forward to book four. Sequel or bust! This particular book had fewer ship-to-ship battles than the first two books. Most of the action occurs on the ground, in the various segments of a major galactic-level heist. Crew Phoenix must break into a top secret vault, the titular Kantovan Vault. It's location is fairly extreme and rather hard to credit, but it makes for a good story. There are some poignant scenes in this book, including the death of a lovable character.
Set in the distant future in the far reaches of the Milky Way, Joel Shepherd serves up a solid space-opera populated with humans, aliens (froggies, humanoids, furballs, bugs) and even some robots and drones (various species of cybernetic super-intelligence). The crew of the military warship Phoenix are likable, and the main characters grow on you across the three books published so far. Bonding occurs credibly as this honorable but renegade crew gradually uncovers a conspiracy at the highest levels of authority, a secret terrible and fearful, hidden away for centuries, and protected at all costs. When Phoenix stumbles on the truth, they are forced to make some tough choices, and to engage in desperate missions, driving them further and further from home, into deep space. For the most part, they stand alone, but gradually they do acquire a few allies. I hope to see more alliances, and to see some of the current alliances deepen, and maybe some to be tested.
Spiral Wars feels a little like Sullivan's Riyira fantasy series, because long-believed lies are slowly uncovered, history revealed to be myth. Some friends prove fickle and some alliances false. There is a sense of suspense and intrigue, of holding one's breath for the next shoe to drop.
I've been reading space opera lately, but I tend to avoid tales told in 1st person "i-me-my perspective" because a singular voice gets old fast. This series, told in 3rd person, is better than most I've read. It compares on a par with Bujold's Vorkosigan series.

I enjoy the writers style. His humor made the book that much more enjoyable
    Great Audiobook
Very entertaining Audiobook. I enjoy this series very much. Highly recommended. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
    Very entertaining!
I like the inter-action between the different types of personalities that are made in the story. Although it is a little scary thinking about the possibility of someone's intelligence being stored in a mechanical device that may or may not have a soul.
