    Playing chicken with the devil
I confess to bias. I preordered the book and downloaded Battle of the Void at the stroke of midnight. Yes, the other books in the series are that good! Fox outdoes himself in Battle of the Void. The plot is fresh and maintains my interest in the series. Luke Daniels has improved his narration and has created new voices for more characters. Yes, I got irritated as he mixed accents in earlier stories The story line is fresh. He does a superb job of unpacking and developing the Xaros. Fox and Daniels kept me on the edge of my seat as mere mortals do battle with "Uberbeings". Fox explores and develops the characters of several of the Procedurally created humans and doughboys. I enjoyed getting to know more about Makarov.(forgive my spelling as I only listen to the Audible versions of books). The book ranks high on my short list of great SciFi.
    Another well-written/well-told series continuation
This book has the fight to save humankind from the Xaros being waged on two fronts; one with the 8th fleet against the earth-bound Zaros drone armada fighting Zorro and the other with the Breitenfeld venturing into Mad Malal's lair with the quest of acquiring a potential key for ultimate victory.
As with the previous installments, there is a lot going on to keep the story interesting, along with the introduction of a few new species; one of them being Sergeant Torni. Yes, she exists on ... sort of ... and still, always a marine.
    Give me more!
Love it, the only problem is waiting for the next book in the series to release! Other than that great series overall.
Mr. Daniels is amazing story teller
Luke performance in this book and previous books is superb. His ability to cover a range of characters combined with consistent presentation is what makes a good story great!
Strong addition to a great series
This is a great series. The writing is clean with a well planned, imaginative story arc and exciting plot twists throughout. Luke Daniels continues to impress with a seemingly endless stable of unique and recognizable voices, bringing life and personality to each character.
I'm looking forward to the next installment and highly recommend the series to anyone looking for exciting science fiction military drama.

Super ending rather than bogging down!
This great ending mixes themes we've read in several other places. There's New World Order, mind implants, the Borg, rogue robots, one-track-mind Amazons, cloning, euthanasia, genetically -designed children, mutiny, and shifty people! Sparhawk remains an honorable man through it all. All standard for BV Larson.
Edoardo Ballerini give Sparhawk his proper upper-class perfect poise and pronunciation, while also voicing his grand-dame Aunt, political father, the Betas, the Stroge, and everyone in between.
    Well done all around.
    B. V. Delivers yet again!
Bottom line: If you enjoy science fiction and space you may really like this trilogy and this book.
I was thrilled when this was released as when I finished book 2, I was impatient for the story to continue. I went as far as to contact Audible customer service to ask about it's availability. B. V. is among a small group of my very favorite authors and this story from beginning to possible ending is in my opinion very good... The way this book ends, it seems to take the word trilogy seriously, however, there certainly is a place for the story to continue so perhaps we'll see.
    overall solid book
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I recommend the series. This has been my least favorite book of the series. The first book was good, the second book was amazing and this book was decent. I really enjoy the space battles, the suspense on the duration of space battles is interesting and B V Larson does a great job with space battles. The space battle in this book just isn't as good as the 1st and 2nd book.
What did you like best about this story?
The last 3 hours of the book were the best of the whole book.
What does Edoardo Ballerini bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Of all the space books I've read Edoardo Ballerini is by far my favorite narrator.
    Any additional comments?
Without giving to much of the plot, I was disappointed one of my favorite characters wasn't in most of the book.
    excellent series
What an excellent series. Never predictable and always keeping you guessing. Read this series! This last book was a little long but the plot twists kept you going. Narrator was skilled and at first I didn't like his voice but it grew on me throughout the series.

Something different in a good way!
William D Arand finishes off his selfless hero trilogy with what I can only describe as the best book of the series. New characters and old favourites with some solid world building and character development I've found myself going back to the first book to start enjoying the trilogy again.
Jeff Hays has worked his magic on this book as well, if your not familiar with his other work I strongly recommend checking it out, he has a gift for adding a unique tone to each character, adding another dimension to an already good work there's not much more I can add to this without spoilers so I'll just finish up by saying it was worth a credit, and I hope to see the author add more onto this in the future, there's so much potential for more books and I'm more than willing to buy them
Great ending, to a fantastic series.
I would and am going to read these books again, worth the credit, and you'll fall in love with the characters.
    A very unsatisfying conclusion
I liked the first two books. They weren't amazing, but enjoyable. After Nadine's death and Runner's torturing of Jacob in the second book, I had expected things to get a little more serious in the third book. Some actual conflict between people he cared about. Something other than Runner and his ever expanding harem against the game. I was disappointed.
Runner tortures Jacob in extreme fashion and when the girls find out they just say Nadine wouldn't approve, Runner agrees, and that's the end of it. Runner finds out that someone is spying on him, a perfect chance for one of the girls to betray him, but no. We don't even find out who the spy is. The author explains that after a while the people that are taken in by Runner's charisma stat will eventually be unaffected by it, but not a single person changes their feelings about him. Really? Not a single girl in his harem would prefer a man who is at least occasionally serious. Not a single girl wants a monogamous relationship, even though that is clearly the norm in the game setting.
On that note, the author seems unable to grasp the idea that a person can in fact care about someone without having sex with them. Runner's harem bulges at the seems in this book. Even as he professes to like strong women, every single girl melts to his touch. The only women who stands up to him are the Goddess he defeats and the one actual human that was his former girlfriend.
And I will end with werewolf nipple tweaks. Seriously...

    Excellent Time Travel Adventure
If you like time travel and books/films like Dark Matter, Lost, 12 Monkeys, the Time Traveler's Wife, National Treasure, the you will absolutely love this book!
The author introduced an innovative time travel concept/tool, and kept it very consistent throughout the entire book. The pace is fast and very engaging, it keeps the reader on edge at just the right spots. All the characters are very likeable and well-developed. I didn't want the book to end, but when it did, the ending was satisfying and closed off the plot well.
Definite give this book a try, and you will be hooked within the first 15 minutes!
A Fun, Unique Time Travel Tale
4.5 AudiobookIn Times Like These was such a fun listen. Ive heard a fair amount of time travel tales and this is one of the most fun. All authors approach time travel differently and Van Coops take is one of the more unique that Ive encountered. I thought he did an excellent job of spacing explanations and revelations out in this story. Some time travel stories (and stories, in general) have a tendency to unload information in concentrated dumps. That can put a lot of pressure on the reader to process everything at once. Considering the amount of information that needed to be delivered here, In Times Like These was pretty dump-free.
My primary experience with In Times Like These is, oddly enough, one of relief. A few months ago I was in a cart before horse situation as I listened to The Chronothon (#2 in this series). I respect that some readers dont mind taking on a series out of order, but Im not one of them. Because I rate titles based on my enjoyment level, the cart/horse situation greatly impacted my review of The Chronothon (which Ill now need to amend).
When In Times Like These became available on audio, I jumped at the chance to fill the gaps in my experience with the series. In my review of The Chronothon, I predicted that at least 75% of my complaints with that particular title could be nullified by hearing In Times Like These. Thats why I was so relieved by my positive experience with In Times Like These. I really wanted to enjoy The Chronothon, but I didnt have everything I needed to do so at the time. Now I do and Ive become pretty obsessed with the series. Needless to say, Im on pins and needles waiting for the third installment!
In Times Like These instilled in me a love of the characters and a better understanding of them on a personal level. Most importantly, I now have a vital understanding of the way time works in the series universe.

Still entertaining after all these books
I've found very few authors who can keep a series going past book 3 (or 4 at the most) and still keep the story compelling, interesting and creative. Richard Fox is one of those rare birds and book 5 is more proof of that. Part of it has to do with the unique cast of characters he has created, from naive to serious to snarky to untrustworthy to heroic to despicable but all compelling and woven in such a way that they each play a worthy part of the story. He also stages these peoples in ways that their scenes are often only loosely grouped to the others so that it's like a bunch of disconnected mini-story arcs occurring during the telling of the book.
I was saddened when in book 4 one of my favorite characters, Sergeant Torni gave up her life in a selfless act to save her squad but am pleased that she re-surfaces again in book 5 ... sort of.
Excellent writing and Luke Daniels is an excellent narrator.
    lots of awesomeness
loved this entire series! the adventures of hale and his marines has been a fascinating tale. one people of all ages could love. Luke daniels is one of the top tier narrators in the biz and captures the stories he reads with exquisite precision. can't wait for audible to finish producing the series!!!
    The narration
Narration very good very animated I like animated story like that very well done can Not wait for book 6
    Great series
This has been a great series. Can't wait for the rest of the series to be on audible.
You will continue to live it.
Mr. Fox keeps you entertained and mesmerized with each chapter. The ending well let's just say you'll love it and definitely be wanting to get the next book as soon as you can. The one thing that Mr. Fox does is keep you focused on each characters story within the main story so you can fully understand the stories main points. You can also close your eyes and see each picture or scene as clear as a bell. You will love this book and be waiting to get the next!

Great follow up to book one
So many times, book two of a series is a bit of a let down. And 95% of the time book two will leave u hanging without wrapping anything up. Not This Book! It wrapped up a few details and somehow found the perfect balance between fulfillment and wanting more. I can't wait to read the third and I think last of this series.
    Finally!
Ahh wonderful. Another fantastic title after a very appealing first book, with furthered character development and some back stories and world building. Nicely balancing the plot threads started earlier. It's finally dawning on me how strange it is to listen to a guy voicing a whole cast and getting you to believe and recognize everyone. It gets a little stretched with the growing cast at times but there are some pretty beautiful women's voices. That's just kinda badass and interesting on it's own. Loved the character direction. Would love some notice before the next one comes out in case I don't save my credits correctly.
    Possibly a Parody?
I cant tell if this series is meant to be taken seriously or if it is some kind of parody à la Tom Holt. It reads like a 15yr old boys version of a cheesy fantasy romance novel. If you are a 15yr old boy, you will surely love it. If not, you may find it either amusing or offensive because it gets pretty ridiculous. Even more so than the first book. I found it mostly amusing but Im not sure that was the authors intention. The female characters are especially unbelievable. Either the author has never met a real female and has no idea how they would act and react or they are meant to be unbelievable because they are only NPCs and therefore not real. Who knows which. No amount of charisma would make this many females so stupid and I sincerely hope that no grown men would be so immature. The virtual reality part of the story line still kept me interested but since Runner can now turn off death in the game, why doesnt he just do so? Wouldnt that solve the biggest part of the problem immediately, giving him more time to figure out how to get everyone out? This is not explained. The saving grace here is the narrator, who is excellent. He gives these cartoonish characters a bit of life, giving each a unique voice and somehow keeping them all straight. He is quite good with both sexes, never sounding awkward.

    Awesome book but...
Another awesome book in the series but I really wish the author would advance the storyline more and stop jumping all over the place tell the story from multiple points of view and just stick to telling it from team alpha's point of view, they are the only reason I keep buying the books to see what they face next.
Does absolutely nothing to advance the story.
This entire book could have been easily condensed and added to the next book in the series. On its own it does nothing at all to advance the story of the Arisen series. Everything is more or less as it was at the end of the book as it was at the start. Considering how book 8.5 ended this is especially disappointing.
R.C. does an amazing job as usual.
Another great book in the series
Another great book in the series... exciting, suspenseful... you never know what happens yet, you just know that whatever happens... it's going to suck worse for the characters than the last 10 minutes. My one and only qualm with the book... I have to wait until the next one is released... grrr!
    totally epic
This was a exciting continuation, I have truly started liking team alpha and the dynamics in the team. looking forward to The Flood
No advance to the story line?
Alpha team is tasked with going back to Camp Lemonnier and if necessary deeper into the territory to find Patient Zero for the research scientist. I recall from the previous book Nemesis that the Al-Shabab leader had the true Patient Zero zombie chained to a wall in The Stronghold and kept it close as a source of his power. I was almost surprised that no one in this book suggested they go back to The Stronghold to retrieve that Patient Zero and get some payback while they were at it. The turmoil between Handon and Hano is constantly rearing its head throughout the story. I dont see how those guys can operate with that animosity between them, but somehow they seem to manage. The fragile status of London is another sub-plot switched to occasionally to keep that situation in the loop. The mission to retrieve Patient Zero, deliver it to the scientist on the JFK, and get scientist & patient to London is laid out at the prologue and unfulfilled at the epilogue. So, has there been no advance to the story line as some reviewers have opined? Hano thought the entire mission was a waste of time since they are now talking about returning to Hargeisa for Patient Zero. Who are we to argue?

    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
For listeners of Station Eleven and The Snow Child, Lily Brooks-Dalton's haunting debut is the unforgettable story of two outsiders - a lonely scientist in the Arctic and an astronaut trying to return to Earth - as they grapple with love, regret, and survival in a world transformed.
Augustine, a brilliant, aging astronomer, is consumed by the stars. For years he has lived in remote outposts, studying the sky for evidence of how the universe began. At his latest posting in a research center in the Arctic, news of a catastrophic event arrives. The scientists are forced to evacuate, but Augustine stubbornly refuses to abandon his work. Shortly after the others have gone, Augustine discovers a mysterious child, Iris, and realizes that the airwaves have gone silent. They are alone.
At the same time, Mission Specialist Sullivan is aboard the Aether on its return flight from Jupiter. The astronauts are the first human beings to delve this deep into space, and Sully has made peace with the sacrifices required of her: a daughter left behind, a marriage ended. So far the journey has been a success. But when Mission Control falls inexplicably silent, Sully and her crewmates are forced to wonder if they will ever get home.
As Augustine and Sully each face an uncertain future against forbidding yet beautiful landscapes, their stories gradually intertwine in a profound and unexpected conclusion. In crystalline prose, Good Morning, Midnight poses the most important questions: What endures at the end of the world? How do we make sense of our lives? Lily Brooks-Dalton's captivating debut is a meditation on the power of love and the bravery of the human heart.
    Critic Reviews:
"Good Morning, Midnight is a remarkable and gifted debut novel. Lily Brooks-Dalton is an uncanny chronicler of desolate spaces, whether it's the cold expanse of the universe or the deepest recesses of the human heart." (Colson Whitehead)
"What does it mean to be isolated from the ordinariness of the everyday world, yet to find the extraordinariness of being close to another human being? With imagination, empathy, and insight into unchanged and unchangeable human nature, Lily Brooks-Dalton takes us on an emotional journey in this beautiful debut." (Yiyun Li)
"A truly original novel, otherworldly and profoundly human.... This beautiful story reminds us of our deep longing for connection - with those we love, with strangers, with ourselves. We come to understand that, across time and distance, in the face of isolation and emptiness, it is tenderness and communication that keep us tethered to each other. Good Morning, Midnight is a fascinating story, surprising and inspiring at every turn." (Keith Scribner)

But the situation turns dire when they catch sight of a ship belonging to the mysterious beings who orchestrate the fearsome Drasin's depredations. This powerful Empire, it seems, has two primary aims: to conquer new worlds and settle old scores. Weston's ultimate objective: keep humanity from becoming collateral damage as the Drasin war expands to engulf the galaxy.

The story was fine but the narration didn't fit.
    Any additional comments?
The story was fine but I would have enjoyed it more if it wouln't have been for the narration.
too short. half a book. disappointed.
I'd like the rest of the book. very disappointed in comparison to the others in this series.
    Minimal substance in this book.
Too much filler and build up before reaching an enjoyable conclusion, overall lacking in substance compared to previous releases in the series.
    performance wasn't great
story was alright not as good as the old let ones what happened to the old reader I liked him better
    What was that?
I'm not sure how to review this. It seemed to have some good parts, but nothing ever tied together and there was zero story progression. You can sum up the entire book as "some people in space ships saw some other people in space ships and shot at each other, but weren't sure who they were."

    Publisher's Summary:
Rosemary Harper doesn't expect much when she joins the crew of the aging Wayfarer. While the patched-up ship has seen better days, it offers her a bed, a chance to explore the far-off corners of the galaxy, and, most importantly, some distance from her past. An introspective young woman, she's never met anyone remotely like the ship's diverse crew, including Sissix, the exotic reptilian pilot; chatty engineers Kizzy and Jenks, who keep the ship running; and Ashby, their noble captain.
Life aboard the Wayfarer is chaotic and crazy - exactly what Rosemary wants. It's also about to get extremely dangerous when the crew is offered the job of a lifetime. Tunneling wormholes through space to a distant planet is definitely lucrative and will keep them comfortable for years. But risking her life wasn't part of the plan.
In the far reaches of deep space, the tiny Wayfarer crew will confront a host of unexpected mishaps and thrilling adventures that force them to depend on each other. To survive, Rosemary's got to learn how to rely on this assortment of oddballs - an experience that teaches her about love and trust and that having a family isn't necessarily the worst thing in the universe.

    This book has no plot.
Where does The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I'm not sure how to answer that. I have hundreds of audiobooks. I will say it wouldn't be in my favorites and I have no desire to listen to it again. That it has as many good reviews as it does is shocking and surprising to me.
It's not because the writing is bad. It's actually really good. But this book bonks everything I know about writing as far as needing a beginning, middle, end and some goal to achieve or overcome. This story is like packing up the friends and family and going on a week long road trip, then sitting down to watch home movies of what you saw. You get to see yellow stone, but you also stop at some old grungy gas station and buy pop tarts while waiting for your brother to fill up the car. That's not an overly exciting memory to have to watch for hours and you spank your sister on the head for filming those parts of the trip.
It sounds crazy, but that is the whole book. Yes it is character driven but none of the characters were doing anything interesting either. The captain, came off as a really nice guy, just not a captain. Some of the characters themselves were interesting, but not enough to carry an entire book with nothing really happening. Its just mainly a follow along. A look into mundane lives that lacked a goal or excitement.
Contrary to how I sound. I didn't hate the book. Again, it was well written and the narrator did a decent job. If the other books in the series are also plotless, then this will be my one and only trip into this universe. Its to bad as I really do like the world she built. I just need it all to go somewhere.
    Wonderful characters; no real plot
What did you like best about The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet? What did you like least?
A great ensemble cast with beautiful dynamics among them. Fun, comforting. But no real plot! Lots of little episodes, but tension never develops except for short, half-chapter intervals.
Nothing happens :( I couldn't even finish it.
