Got more than I bargained for!
I wanted to read "Rim To Rim" because my husband took the same hike and I thought I'd gain insight to his adventure. Of course, the descriptions of the canyon were most welcome but the author caught my attention well beyond expectations as the plot unfolded and mysterious events drew me in.
The book held my interest and I'll gladly recommend Jeanne Meeks book to my book club.
I enjoyed trying to keep up with the various suspects and the plot twists and turns--even the romantic choices the young and more mature women characters became involved in, however. the lesbian angle seemed superfluous as did one scene of anger between these same friends, explained away to no end and easily dismissed.
Overall, I'm glad I got to read this tale: I "saw" my husband's hike, rim to rim, through the author's fine descriptions as I had hoped--and enjoyed a good mystery as a bonus!
"RIM TO RIM" -- One HECK of an Exciting Trek!
First, I owe a debt of gratitude to author Jeanne Meeks. Decades ago, a young man in his early twenties stood at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon staring out at the grandeur and dreaming about hiking the canyon from rim-to-rim. He was newly married, with a wife and nine-month-old child in tow, so his dream would have to wait. A few years later he stood at the North Rim, again longing to fulfill his dream, only this time he and his wife were traveling with four-year-old and six-month-old daughters. Again, his dream would have to wait. Alas, time and circumstances thwarted the dream, UNTIL he stumbled across a novel entitled "Rim To Rim: Death in the Grand Canyon." Being a lover of adventure stories and mysteries, the now much older dreamer bought the book and plunged in. I was that young dreamer, and older reader. And I have Jeanne Meeks to thank for finally fulfilling my dream of hiking the canyon rim-to-rim, although vicariously, through the pages of this wonderful debut novel.
Other reviewers have pretty much covered the synopsis of this adventure/mystery, so I won't go there. I will say that this is a story of a fifty-year-old woman who begins the journey from the North Rim with self-doubt and low self-esteem, and by the time she reaches the South Rim she has been transformed into to a strong and confident, 'I can do it!' person. But Amy's transformation is anything but easy. With the help of her new friend and hiking partner, Sarah, she reaches deep within herself to draw up physical and mental courage she never knew existed. Facing danger and death, she completes the journey triumphantly, bruised and battered, but with an inner strength and the resolve to begin her life anew.

Great blending of spiritual beliefs and mystery
What did you love best about Cat?
The question of what is real and what isn't. And, if something isn't "real", then just what is it?
What about Thomas Blocks performance did you like?
Thomas' speech pattern (a bit of a Southern drawl) works very well in this setting. His use of Native American music was a nice touch.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I wanted to find out who dunnit!

    Title: The Hidden People

    Narrator: Paul McLaughlin

Length: 11 hrs and 10 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-06-16
    Publisher: Jo Fletcher Books
Ratings: 1.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
The best-selling author of Richard & Judy Book Club hit The Cold Season returns with a chilling mystery where superstition and myth bleed into real life with tragic consequences.
Pretty Lizzie Higgs is gone, burned to death on her own hearth - but was she really a changeling, as her husband insists?
Albie Mirralls met his cousin only once, in 1851, within the grand glass arches of the Crystal Palace. But unable to countenance the rumours that surround her murder, he leaves his young wife in London and travels to Halfoak, a village steeped in superstition.
Albie begins to look into Lizzie's death, but in this place where the old tales hold sway and the Hidden People supposedly roam, answers are slippery, and further tragedy is just a step away.
    Critic Reviews:
"This is an intriguing and unsettling scenario. Littlewood's descriptions are picturesque and her prose convincingly dated and beautifully lyrical." (Sunday Express)
    Members Reviews:
    Disappointed
The story held promise initially, but overall it was slow, not believable and tedious. I found it difficult to slog through.
Great book, terrible narration and production
I should say first that this is a great novel. It deals ambiguously and sensibly with folklore and fairy belief and sets up a very plausible and fascinating period backdrop. It's compelling, interesting and poetic and it keeps the reader guessing. However my heart goes out to Alison Littlewood as her brilliant book has been savaged by the most ham fisted and lazy audio prouduction I've ever heard.
I don't believe the blame lies entirely with Paul McLaughlin, who is clearly not a British English speaker and turns in a fairly convincing accent (for the most part). However his slips in pronunciation go far beyond transatlantic differences. The producer demonstrates his or her incompetence from the start by allowing the narrator to open with a quote from W B "Yeeets". This sets he tone for what is to come, not enough to spoil the story entirely you might think. But then come the Yorkshire dialect sections.
Now at one point during the recording of this you would think that the actor or producer would have said, "Hey should we maybe take a listen to a recording of some Yorkshire people talking". Instead they insult listeners from all over the world by assuming they won't know the difference and opt for a kind of demented middle earth approximation of what they think a Yorkshire accent would probably sound like.
One of the great strengths of Littlewoods book is her use of real folk song in the story and its parallels and hints to the narrative that unfolds. Again you might expect an audio producer to direct an actor who had no knowledge of English folk song to simply speak the verse sections, or perhaps spend a little bit of time listening to some recordings if only to get a feel for traditional English song. Not a chance ! The voice actor instead seems to have been encouraged to guess at the sound of these songs by imagining a world where music had not yet been invented. If I'm wrong about Paul McLaughlin and he is in fact a native British English speaker then... well... Wow.
I don't mean to savage the voice artist here, I think he's been let down almost as much as the author. It's the producer who is simply not up to the job.

    Not Recommended
This is a book whose premise had potential to be a suspenseful, gripping novel. However, none of that potential is realized. Instead, it is badly written, filled with graphic sex and descriptions of the wealth Voort and his well-to-do partner. I found myself not caring about any of the characters. There's a twist in the middle that makes reading the rest of the book almost irrelevant. I'm always looking for new authors to add to my reading list. Based on this, Black isn't going to be one of them.
Story had potential, writing was horrible
The basic storyline that some broken-hearted men could be involved in the killings of their old lovers could have interesting. The police detective Voort is horrible.
However, the worst part of the book was the writing style. Black is all over the place with his writing. He wastes so much of the reader's time with irrelevant material, trying to be descriptive. The problem is his descriptions have nothing to do with anything involving the plot or characters. And when he does try to give us character descriptions he either describes clothing, or attempts to use mundane prose to let us in on the personality of the characters.
I could go on and on about how bad this book is, but I will not. I do like books in this genre, and you should click on the more about me link to find the other books I have read and liked. That way you can judge my review on this book better.
If you choose not to check me out, just do not waste your time on this book.
A very shaky start to a series
The Broken Hearts Club is a small group of men who have broken up with their girlfriends and just can't seem to get over it. They meet every Thursday night with their psychologist in the back room of a restaurant where they discuss their failed relationships and try to offer each other support and understanding.
One night, after a particularly emotional meeting, the unthinkable happens and one of the men decides it's time to confront the woman who caused him so much heartache. The result is a most brutal murder and you get the sense that a monster has been unleashed on the streets of New York City.
Taking the case is Conrad Voort, a millionaire homicide cop, and his equally affluent partner Mickie. Their investigation begins perfectly normally although they are hampered by a distinct lack of clues apart from the letters BHC gouged into the victim's kitchen table.

    superheroes that are super good
The setting is just before World War II. Europe is on the brink of war and evil seems have infiltrated the Earth. Max Davies as The Peregrine is a reluctant superhero, created when he witnessed his fathers brutal murder as a child. Hes brilliant, an expert fighter and receives premonitions from his dead father, but hes pretty lonely too. Enter the beautiful and brave young actress from Atlanta to fill this void. Together they can take on the world.
The Peregrine Omnibus is a large collection (31 hours) of short story adventures about the Peregrine, his lover, friends and the many incredibly evil men intent on destroying the world. The stories flow forward, building on the ones before, each a chapter in the Peregrines adventures. The theme of each story/adventure is pretty consistent, an evil man or team of evil men find a magic artifact and want to use it to open up the gates of Hell, raise a monster from the dead, or control the world. Max uses his fighting skills, guns, magic knife and visions to thwart them.
The Peregrine is comic book action in short story/novel form. It is fun and entertaining. The story plots tend to repeat themselves, but there is enough variety to keep the listener going. The villains are pure evil and the heroes virtuous. The gadgets are impossibly good (a silent car, a jet in 1937, a knife that kills any demon, a gun that doesnt run out of bullets), but are necessary to equalize the impossibly strong foes. Some of the names are cringe-worthy (The Black Bat, Satan, the Iron Maiden), but work with the comic book atmosphere.
Pete Milan performs the audiobook. He has a wonderful voice and is perfect for the stories. At first he seems to be a little too dramatic, pausing and announcing The Peregrine with added importance whenever Max Davies takes on his alter ego, but seems to ease into it later on. It fits with the comic book reality he is creating. Mr. Milan has an exceptional voice that is a pleasure to listen to.
If you enjoy comic book novels, villains that are super evil, and superheroes that are super good, you should give this a listen. It would be a good choice for young adults too.

Not much of a mystery/police story fan, I began reading them as a distraction from a long course of chemotherapy. I chose a book by Fred Vargas because most of those I enjoyed were by women and I wanted to give the men a chance. Well, Fred is a woman and a very talented author historian and archaeologist. This book "Un peu plus loin" is one of her earlier policiers. A retired detective who has a pet toad is doing some surveillance on his own when he notices something white in some dog excrement on the grill surrounding tree in a park in Paris. It turns out to be the tip bone of a human toe. What's not to like in a beginning like that. The characters are always interesting and engaging - that is what makes the Vargas novels so good. The way she uses the language makes it worthwhile to read the French original. I have read nearly all of her policier novels and they are all excellent.
