So tedious I returned.

I adore Mark Billingham and was shocked by how bad this book was. I made it to Chapter 15 and threw in the towel. Dull with unsympathetic characters and virtually no action. Billingham's great narration couldn't save it.

Really liked this book, but...

I really got into the story - great characters and a riveting storyline! Wanted to give it 5 stars overall but the ending was too abrupt for me...needed better closure.

Disappointingly tedious

Having enjoyed some of the previous novels by this author, I was disappointed by this book. Its ponderously slow being dominated by long passages that sound like transcripts of what was said at group therapy sessions for addicts. Followed by hearing the resumé of each session by the therapist. There are hours of this navel-gazing presumably intended to flesh out the characters but I found it boring and irritating.

Most of the characters are battling an addiction of one kind or another. None are likeable and verge on caricatures. Buried in all this verbiage theres a murder that eventually gets hurriedly solved near the end of the book.

The narrator is very good giving each character a distinctive voice.

A fitting end (?) to the Christchurch series!

I was waiting for this one, and Cleave did not disappoint. You may feel it starts off somewhat slowly, what with the various recaps of previous events and return of old familiar characters. But, about a quarter of the way into the tale, Cleave starts drawing you into this latest story and you don't want to put it down. The principal figures are Theo and Carl, two conflicted souls who, in the end, are very much the same. As was the case with each novel in the series, once the story starts unfolding, each chapter stops with an irresistible hook into the next chapter - and the ending is quite the cliffhanger. If you liked the preceding books, you'll find Five Minutes Alone really satisfied.

Good for a light beach read.

Aside from the big brotherish fact that I was asked to review this book within days of finishing it on my kindle even though I actually had ordered it a few years ago, I enjoyed the book well enough--enough to read another fiction book of his. I've read other nonfiction books by Bourdain (Typhoid Mary and Kitchen Confidential, which were much better), but this was the first fiction novel. He writes well. He's a little too stereotypical in his characterizations of the mafia types, but maybe that's true to fact.

disappointing

Bourdain has written better - much better. This was slow. The story was unconvincing. The 'hero,' Henry, was shallow and fake, as was the gangster he was supposedly trying to comes to terms with (having been hired once to kill him...) Compared with 'Bone in the Throat,' this was very poor fare indeed. One expects more, because his earlier books were riviting and entertaining. Like His T.V. Travel series, clearly the man has gottern jaded and tired and his delivery now lacks sparkle and verve. He wrote this in the same tired voice he uses when doing one of his exotic dining scenes in far-off place, 'yet another snake consumed (yawn, yawn) Had he writtem 'Bamboo the same way he wrote Kitchen Confidential, it would have been a best seller. Instead it was a disappointment.

classic

A good story

This is the first fiction book by Bourdain that I have read (Loved Kitchen Confidential and his other cooking stuff) and I enjoyed it a lot. I love his acerbic wit and the characters he developed were well rounded. The story moved at a good pace, there was a little sexy stuff thrown in but nothing graphic. There was some fairly strong violence, but it was appropriate to the story line and wasn't too graphic for my taste. I would definitely read more of his fiction stuff after reading this.

Perfect beach book, fun read.

In my opinion I think this is the best of Bourdain's novels. I read this in a few days on a beach and it was perfect. I liked the characters and it was a page turner. Great writing. I highly recommend especially if your going to a warm beach on vacation.

Rica historia y muy entretenida

No puedes pedir a un español que imite el acento mexicano se escucha horrible ese detalle mata la narración mejor no lo hubiese imitado, la historia me recuerda el libro el cofre de Constantina o Constantinopla, pero me gusta como viaja por Utila eso fue lo que me atrajo, me encanta la narración de el Sahara y de Guatemala muchas sorpresas ricas sorpresas excelente historia !

Buena voz, mal acento

Me disgustó el exagerado acento vulgar e inapropiado para el personaje mexicano, quien merecía. un acento mas suave y matizado. Me gustaron la historia

los personajes, los escenarios. Recomiendo la audición.

Entre felicidad y verdad pedimos la felicidad

Novela entretenida, especialmente al principio, el final me decepcionó, demasiado irreal.

El personaje principal masculino me pareció demasiado arrogante y coincido con otros lectores que el lenguaje que se imputa a la arqueóloga Mexicana (heroína de la novela) es demasiado vulgar y soez para una intelectual de dicho país.

La narración es aceptable.

maybe the best in a superb noir series

This New Zealand noir world created by Paul Cleave is magnificent. This is one of my very favorite noir series and this book might be the best of the series.

The books involve several recurring characters and stories interweave a bit. This book is about ex-cop-turned-PI Theo Tate, and the case involves his first murder case as a detective, fifteen years ago. It is very dark and creepy, involves violence against children and an everyman, caught up in momentous events, seeking justice.

Try to read these books in order, especially the Tate books (see below) as his continuing backstory is great, and subsequent books make reference to characters and situations from those books and you'll enjoy that.

This could be read as a standalone. Tate's narrative voice is superb -- snarky, world-weary and looking for justice. He is ALWAYS a detective and is fun to watch/hear. The story is superb with lots of twists, the pacing is sublime and the dialogue authentic. The humor is dry, the observations insightful and Christchurch practically breathes, the descriptions are so good.

If you enjoy noir, you will love this series by Paul Cleave.

The Laughterhouse

Someone in Christchurch is murdering people within hours of each other and with the clock ticking Theodore Tate is scrambling to figure out who and how to stop him.

I really liked this book but for a few things at the end. I am not sure I should be taking off a star for my preferred ending

but I am, however, make no mistake this is a really great thriller. It wasn't because there was a lack of an ending but because

I didn't like the outcome of one aspect in the conclusion of the book.

I was so consumed with the characters that I could have read several more

chapters! I would suggest reading these book in order or at least the books with Tate/Schroder in them as the books progress with the characters

personal lives. I suggest a reading order of THE CLEANER, THE KILLING HOUR, CEMETARY LAKE, BLOOD MEN , COLLECTING COOPER and THE LAGHTERHOUSE.

Paul Cleave has a great talent for building suspense and keeping it there.

Suspenseful supernatural thriller

A well written supernatural thriller about a group of teenagers who take on a government created terror (that is linked to one of the boys past) in order to save their friend. There are many twists and turns in this suspenseful read and the excellent narration brought the authors words to life. Descriptive scenes, short chapters, a captivating storyline and strong characters that you soon became attached to, all helped build a suspense novel that keeps you on the edge of your seat. A supernatural thriller, absorbing and addictive

What did you love best about The 7th Jackal?

I loved the way two stories intersected and met head-on to a satisfying conclusion, including the way the group of teenagers were portrayed and the corrupt and secretive workings of the government in an area 51 type of atmosphere.

What did you like best about this story?

The description of the forest that gives the reader the feeling of being inside the story and living it.

I have two. One would be Sam Cage, a government worker caught up and trying to stay afloat in a corrupt system. The other was Keenan Braddock, a young clairvoyant an unlikely hero who leads a group of teenagers against a haunting enemy.

The narrator, J. Scott Bennett did an excellent job in portraying the characters. Excellent storyline.

A great listen with multiple plot threads!

This story has two major plot threads, one deals with a group of kids dealing with a murderous maniac, and the other deals with the "agency" trying to track down said maniac (with another murderous maniac).

The writer does a great job of bringing depth to his characters and J. Scott Bennetts narration does a fantastic job bringing those characters to life. Davis is so good, that you even begin to feel sympathy for the main antagonist!

A great story and listen, well worth the credit.

Over padded

This had the makings of a good read/listen but was spoiled by being over padded with tedious detail and too much repetition.

It was an unlikely tale with an unsympathetic and irritating central character.

The narration was good.

The book was simply a re working of other more successful Scandi novels. This is no Stieg Larson or Karin Fossum. Buyer beware.

Gripping stuff with some psychological insights

Great gripping right to the end

Great book kept you guessing. Really good change to find a thriller writer that doesn't feel the need to swear and go in overly graphic detail.

Is it me?

I struggled through this book but maybe if I had read, istead of listened, I might have rated it higher. The story itself is fine, although in places the narrative owes more to Enid Blyton than Jo Nesbo, it's a little chatty, over explanative. It's a dark story but it didn't hold my attention as it should - I have seen 5 star reviews on Amazon but I don't see it. The other problem, which may accentuate the problems I had with the almost child-like story telling, is the narrator. Laura Paton has a lovely speaking voice, reads very well, and is hard to fault on the surface apart from when she says 'stepped in blood', for example, then I hear 'Pooh was a silly bear'. Her voice reminds me of a mother reading fairy stories to children and her male voices are poor; can't be helped and other's may not find that her voice lacks the gravitas and dark tones needed to help this book. Maybe Sean Barrett would have been a better choice. Look, this is just a personal point of view but that's what these are for.

Extremely Disappointing

This third novel in the series is the worst book I've read by Lisa Jackson. The first third of the novel is boring and redundant. The plot twists unfold and are ridiculous. The only redeeming quality is that the author can write suspense.

After reading this book I doubt I'll continue reading this series.

Confusing

I'm a huge fan of Lisa Jackson's previous books, but I couldn't finish this one. The story seemed jumbled with no clear direction and no strong plot that grabs and keeps your interest. I wasn't even tempted to scroll to the end and see what happened. So disappointing. . .

T'his was the most inane, amateurish book I

This was the most inane, amateurish book I have ever read. As it neared the end, the author added as many swear words as possible, all gratuitous to the story, as if her editor insisted on more filth to appeal to the masses. Do NOT waste your time or money!!

Disappointed

First, let me say, I am a HUGE fan of Lisa Jackson's. But this book, in my opinion, just seemed all over the place and I found myself skipping ahead just to find out "whodunnit". It seemed as if it were two books in one, one about the supposed main character Cassie, the second about the Detective. It never allowed you to fully indulge yourself in the characters like her past books. Just really disappointed in this book, although I will continue to purchase her books without hesitation.

Thrilling and exciting

I read this book on an airplane. Yes, it is about a plane hijacking and I read it on on airplane. Not sure what it says about me, but the fact that I read the entire book in two flights (with a short layover in between) says a lot about this novel.

It reads very quickly. The plot is riveting, the characters exciting and well developed, the dialogue rich and meaty, and the language smart and captivating. The tone is equal parts thriller, and dark comedy.

The plot deals with a hijacking of an American plane, which seems nearly impossible in the post-9/11 world. Although I still have some minor skepticism about the plausibility of someone pulling off this crime today, I found the author's handling of the details to be rather masterful. The characters were so enjoyable, the language so easy to get immersed in, and the dialogue moved so quickly, I had little trouble spending my disbelief on some of the plot points. For you see, Corin is not just writing another Die Hard sequel. He has bigger goals in mind.

What did you love best about The Fraud?

As always being a native of Newark the accuracy of the details of the sorroundings, and a strong story line.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, well without spoiling it, certain characters and their relationships with each other.

What does Adam Verner bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

I didn't original like when Adam replaced Macleod Andrews, nothing against Adam, but now he's become the voice of Carter and I enjoy his voice in this series.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, but I don't want to give away anything. Lets just say Carter got gangster, and he had too.

a pretty good book

I enjoyed this installment of the Carter Ross series. He is a report for a Newark newspaper. He goes after a story about car jacking in the area. If you have read the rest of his books you will enjoy this one. I am giving it 3 stars because I thought he went on and on about his upcoming baby a little too much.

Also in this book he did not use or even read the information that the other reporters who were helping with the story. He seem to be a one man show and think about the baby instead of researching his story. it was good. but if he had known more of the truth it could have been a little better. IMO

will listen to the next one -- I like Carter and now he has a baby!
