Suspense, Murder, Revenge, and FUN too!

This was really an enjoyable listen. A clever storyline with characters I cared about and great narration! What more could you ask for?

What I really liked was seeing the main character, Stu, go through changes as he left his mild mannered, follow the rules kind of guy to the man he becomes. How he gets there is part of the fun. What he does with what he learns is a great revenge story. I also learned a lot from this book- how to snare small game, the many uses of tampons (really), and many other tools for how to survive in the wilderness.

There were a few scenes that I thought were not necessary to the overall plan of this book-but not enough to make a real difference.

This was a new author for me--glad I didn't pass this one by.

X-rated Hatchet

You know Hatchet, the teen story of Brian who survives in the Canadian wilderness for months? I expected this to be sort of like that, but funny. I don't know why I expected funny, maybe the cover art. It's not funny.

But this is another coming-of-age, growing up story, except the main guy is 40. That's okay, some people take longer to decide what and how they want to be. While our guy is lost in the Alaskan wilderness, we get to see what happens at home, and how others are growing up and determining their personas.

We get to see this mental, physical and personal development process in both places, the fast world of high dealing business, accounting and law, as well as the unforgiving emptiness. Actually, both places seem to be pretty unforgiving.

An allegory is made here to wolves. Just as there are wolves on Wall Street, there are wolves in Alaska. The two species have much in common, but also vary significantly. This plays out at the end, a bit ridiculously, unbelievably, but then you remember it must be parallel. Some of the characters act unbelievably, but then I guess real people do to. I wouldn't put up with some of the behavior the one woman did, but it played into how she decided to redesign herself.

I wasn't expecting soft porn, but there you go. Depending on your imagination, it might be hard porn.

A Story of Double Cross and Revenge

I enjoyed this story....The plot is clever and fast paced.

The tension builds as the story builds. The characters are developed well enough that I liked or disliked them...

Intriguing mystery

Harry, after being in school among rich kids, is just trying to set up a practice when a drug importer tricks him into doing illegal stuff for more money. It turns out the importer is not the only one out to get him as someone is setting him up for murder too. Interesting story with many twists and turns.

Extraordinary.

An intelligent science fiction/ suspense novel. I rarely write reviews however this book is excellent -- most of the time when I take a chance I am disappointed however this book is one of the best I have listened/ read this year.

Thriller with a super smart next gen human

Kazuaki Takano's thriller, Genocide of One is a near future action tale with an evolved human going up against global state sponsored spy and anti-terrorism groups. The basic premise is a really smart child that has been deemed a threat and must be eliminated. Then ensues a series of action and sleuthing scenes jumping from Africa to Japan to the US.

The pacing is well done with an edge of your seat feel. The story falls down in its over the top approach. A decades old think tank report that had suggested the possibility of an evolved, super smart human arising and taking over the world has apparently been front and center on the US government radar screen ever since. As a result, when vague descriptions emerge that it might have happened, plans are set in motion to eliminate the threat. The child however, has also anticipated this possibility and set in motion his own plans to fight back (which includes murder and mayhem). At the same time, the child has time to develop software to create a drug tailor made for the child of a mercenary who will get him to safety.

The narration is well done with a solid range of characters of various ethnic backgrounds. The tone and mood are well suited for the fast paced actions.

I have no idea how the book ended, because clearly it was cut off. Very frustrating.

Snooze fest!

This book is full of so much action and suspsense however boring narration by reader.

Good story but...

Good story but a bit outdated. Would have preferred a different narrator. As the central character is a woman I feel that I would've enjoyed it more if it had been narrated by a woman and also because she is an American woman I would rather have heard an American accent.

A solid pulp adventure

I gave this 4 stars but I see it as more of a 3.5 star book. The Old Gods Waken has a simple, straightforward plot, some genuinely eerie moments and a good sense of humor. Wellman does a particularly nice job with the Appalachian setting and dialogue. If you're new to this sort of material, this book might have more impact. As a long-time reader of pulp writers like Lovecraft, Howard (and Wellman himself), I found myself entertained but in familiar territory.

Stefan Rudnicki's deep, expressive voice isn't the perfect match for this material but he always does a good job and this book is no exception.

First time I'd heard these stories on audio, and Stefan infuses each character with individuality and authenticity.

When we first meet John I cheered because I've been a fan of these stories since I was a kid and it was a delight to 'meet' Silver John in this way.

I sat on the beach with headphones...watching the waves and the whales and listened to the whole thing on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

i felt the first book was an easy listen with the story line easy to guess and a very neat clean ending

so i gave book two a look hoping the writer matured. characters are likeable. however tue story line again was guessable and done before.

Not my favorite, couldn't get through it

I'm the kinda gal who loves "doomer fiction" and this plot was right up my alley! I was very much looking forward to the book. Too bad the execution is a dud. First of all, the narrator is very quiet and monotone and slow -- it almost sounds as if she's reading a relaxing good night story to a toddler. I usually can do well with most narrators, but I found myself daydreaming and drifting away from her voice, continuously having to rewind and play again -- which I almost never do with other books. Also, the story itself is slow. It reads almost as if Emily is drugged through the whole entire thing. It's foggy and slow paced with a lot of descriptive words. It reads almost like poetry, which would be beautiful with the right story, but feels completely out of place here. This apocalyptic plot with danger and mystery should be fast-paced, exciting, full of tension and apprehension, but instead it feels sleepy and tranquil. In the first hour or so of the book, there's virtually no information about the virus itself, or how it has affected the world, or how life has changed. These upper class teenagers just go through the motions of their day, talking about weddings and jewelry and tampons in a very shallow, superficial way. It's all just kind of strange, and I just had no interest in finishing it. Bummer. I'm going to return it for my credit back...

I'm not convinced the story was disappointing ... the narrator completely ruined this book for me. I have several of Nancy Bush's audiobooks and have gotten completely wrapped up in each of them, but I just could not finish this one.

Ruined by the reader - I wish I hadn't found...

Director and reader need new jobs as the latter sounds bored, monotoned and the former for not realizing this fact. As to the story, boring and poorly paced. In the end a waste of money: don't bother... Monotonous.

Great Book

This is a really good book. A great roller ride. Normally, I can figure out who or at least the why in mystery novels, but Nancy threw in a curve ball or two and kept me guessing.

What did you like best about this story?

I like that is a little romance added in with the mystery.

Which character as performed by Marisa Vitali was your favorite?

Callie. I never really like female voices protraying male voice, but Marisa did well. Still, I liked the main character, Callie.

I did want to listen to this novel in one sitting. I didn't, but if it were possible, I would have.

Hurt's performance gives characters more dimension

Would you listen to Consumed again? Why?

I probably will listen again at some point. This is a compelling example of how novels should be read.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I read the book first, so there were no surprises with regards to plot.

Have you listened to any of William Hurts other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the only performance by Hurt I have listened to, but his reading style adds so much to the characters in this novel.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

"Consumed" is a very cerebral novel; it affects you more in a critical, philosophical manner. For those who enjoy Cronenberg's films, I think this novel has a similar characteristic where there is an element of shock and awe in the aesthetic of the storytelling, but the impression you're left with is far more intellectual in nature.

Any additional comments?

When I read the book I felt like the characters lacked the kind of depth that affects a reader in any lasting way. There wasn't anything particularly memorable about the characters; they seemed to be written with great intuition, but were ultimately forgettable. Listening to the audiobook didn't necessarily change my impression, but it did give the characters a sense of nuance that makes them feel human and relatable.

I am very disappointed that the 1st, 3rd, and, 5th books in this series are on Audible but cannot be purchased if one lives in the United States. Why allowed book 2?

fast-paced action, excellent narration

Danny Black is my favorite of Ryan's SAS heroes and his adventures really come to life when narrated. An entertaining story with a couple of surprises. Doesn't let you down if you're looking for a hard-hitting no-holds-barred thriller.

Story was hard to follow.
