I don't want to spoil the book so suffice to say that Maigret is both a minor part and a major character in this book. I adore this series and the reader is brilliant. Several twists that had me wondering who was telling the truth. One of my favourites in this series.

Excellent!

I suppose I'm biased, because the author is my father, but I really like this book. In fact, it's my favorite. This book is a rewrite of his first novel, and what stands out to me is the plot. He had a very specific idea (a terrorist attack in Yorktown, Virginia), and I think the book works well because the idea is a good one: plausible and rather original. You should totally buy this book for you and all of your friends!

Great action thriller

intriguing storyline, memorable sand enjoyable characters...Mr. Friedman's performance was spectacular - I was certain that the narration was permormed by a dozen or so separate character actors.

Excitement and chuckles

Here's another action-packed thriller from William F. Brown with likable characters you care about. The diplomatic international plot makes it scarily relevant, but the chuckles keep you sane.

Excellent Novel and Audiobook!

This was my first William Brown novel and I was very impressed. So much thought went in to the details and combined with Eddie Frierson's narration, Aim True, My Brothers kept my attention throughout. The twists and turns in every situation kept me guessing at what would come next. Don't miss this one.

Would you consider the audio edition of Half Past Midnight to be better than the print version?

The audio version of this book was fantastic! It was very realistic. I will listen to this again. Very thought-provoking.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Half Past Midnight?

I liked this book from the very beginning. I was hooked right away. When Leeland hears what is happening he wastes no time in kicking his survival skills into high gear; giving his whole family a task to do in order to prepare for immediate evacuation from their home. This was clear throughout the whole story where he proves his leadership skills even when he has to let others do things their way.

Have you listened to any of Corey Snows other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I haven't but I will. He is a very gifted narrator. Corey Snow is a natural. I will look for other books narrated by him.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

This book SHOULD be a film. 'Surviving a Midnight Apocolypse'.

I love how the author Jeff Brackett leads in each chapter with a Nastradamus Quatrain. It makes this book cohesive and reminds us that D-day is possible. It brings a certain reality to this book. A wake up call. What WOULD you do? How WOULD you survive? It was a great listen!I received the audiobook free of charge in exchange for an unbiased review.

Jeff Brackett's Half Past Midnight, Narrated by Corey Snow is a great book. It keeped me rivited to my speakers throughout the entire story.

The story is in the same genre as Televisions "Revolution" except this book is much better; sticking to a single storyline and this story is complete.

The story starts quickly, and the characters are established with the depth needed according to the story line and then grow as the story moves forward.

In short, World War III starts and Leeland Dawsett is a survivalist that has prepared his family for the possibility of war. When he sees a second "sun" in the sky outside Houston he knows he only has a little time to move his family outside the target rich area of Houston, Texas.

As Leeland and his family move North to his Mother-in-laws home the outlaws are already out in force. This story moves from one man's effort to protect his family and moves forward to him becoming part of a community that is trying to survive and rebuild after Nuclear bombs and EMP blasts have left all modern electronics useless.

Nothing is boring in this story as it keeps you on the edge of your seat. The author's use of humor is balanced with the bloody violence of war. I was presently suprised at every aspect of this story.

I like the storyline about the 2 nukes being dropped 50 years ago. Stuff like this really did happen and who knows what is out there in the oceans....

Poorly Written and a waste of time

What disappointed you about Wood's Reef?

Author knows nothing about radio communiications of pilots and air traffic control, unbelievable shark attacks, poorly spoken accents of the terrorists and the access to the Vice President of the United States in Florida. This book should never have been published.

I have to tell you - I am through the first part of "The Cold Nowhere" and this book is not a prequel. It stands on it's own and I liked it a lot. It was a fast past non abridged short story & I'm starting to wish The Cold Nowhere was a lot shorter. Back to this book though. The ending was great! This was a very good psycological thriller. Brian Freeman is one of the few writers with repeating characters that I follow. The Cold Nowhere review to follow.

PERFECT as a novella

I would love to know the story behind Brian Freeman deciding to make this a novella instead of weaving it into another full novel. Was it something he wrote and it didn't fit in another novel or he just created this as a separate story? Whatever it was, it was EXCELLENT! And it will barely tide me over until his next book is out! I hope Joe Barrett always narrates his books. I can't imagine anyone else in the "role."

I'm calling it a novel. I'm a fan of author Brian Freeman and narrator Joe Barrett; both do an excellent job. Freeman tells an excellent story that is filled with the suspense he normally delivers.

A huge disappointment

I was so excited to see a new Michael Robotham book read by Sean Barrett since this has always been a perfect combination of plot and performance. 'Bombproof' did not provide this pleasure. Certainly, Sean Barrett can squeeze some drama out of the telephone directory but here he was pressed to do much with a badly plotted book with an unbelievable central character. Obviously Rowbotham has a host of fans (myself included) who he needs to supply with books but i would rather wait than read a book obviously written in haste without much care.

Good Brit MI5 drama

There is a plodding nature about the series about the Slow Horses of Slough house which is captivating. It is a little like Le Carre, with more humour. I enjoyed it.

Very clever story

I struggled a little to get all the characters straight in my head to start but as the story unfolds the different roles became clear. Very clever, lots of twists, I couldn't put it down.

I would definitely recommend this book. It was my first thriller in some time and was a great choice. Sean Barrett is a fantastic narrator, bringing enormous character and humour to the dialogue. I will definitely be seeking this narrator and author again,

A small beginning to get to the bigger picture

As always an excellent narrative by Sean Barrett who smooth, rich voice eases the horrors of sudden death or near deaths.

Mick Herron's Slough House crowd, all of whom have lost the right to be active agents, are a bunch of losers and misfits resentful of their outcast status from the frontline spies or spooks in Regent's Park. Lamb's instincts and his "team's" fishing expeditions build a far from benign picture that, almost despite themselves, they rescue the City from the brink of disaster. Strangely or sadly, yet again they are unable to claim the credit or cover themselves with glory; they are the "Slow Horses" and unlikely to the heroes of any story or so Regent's Park think!

There is also a keen humourous streak that keeps you amused and laughing despite everything.

Great mystery story written in the style of Agatha Christie.

If you enjoy Agatha Christie, you will love Patricia Wentworth. Miss Silver is as unique a character as Miss Marple. These two writers were writing at the same time, so Miss Silver is NOT a copy (knock-off) of Miss Marple. A great read and super "who-dunit"!

Love Wentworth cosy mysteries!

I really enjoy the these mysteries and only discovered Patricia Wentworth this summer/ I have read several of them and this one is one of the best. The writing is good and the characters well-defined and Miss Silver is always a joy. I will read more in the series and also explore the author's other work.

A Star Is Threatened

Adriana Ford, a famous stage actress, has retired to the country with her family in tow. Her family is a dangerous mix. Her nephew who cheats on his wife. Her nephews' wife who is silently resentful of his phillandering but blames the women who "throw themselves" at him. There is an adopted child whose origins are unknown but who tries desperately and unsuccessfully to be Adriana. There is Star who is acting on stage and her daughter Stella who screams when she is thwarted. Adriana's maid who hates the country and wants to go to London. Adriana begins to think someone wants to kill her and consults Miss Silver. When a fellow actress is killed because she is wearing Adriana's coat, Miss Silver comes to the country and solves the mystery. I find that I like the Wentworth books if I like the characters in the book. The only problem I had with this one was Adriana was not a very sympathetic character and most of the others weren't much better. But the mystery is top notch and it's definitely worth owning.

The wonderful Miss Sliver

I discovered Miss Silver when the books were re-released in the 90's. I bought as many as I could find then, and have been rereading them, so I began looking for more. Although these books are somewhat dated, the stories ring true, and it is comforting to read an author who sets in the middle between the outright fantasy of a lot of "cozies" and "hardboiled".

Very good descriptive writing. You can visualize in your mind what the author is describing. we also read Cold Storage by the same author.
