    Publisher's Summary:
Fast-paced plot driven by the threat of a world-wide viral pandemic, an underlying suggestion of government evil, and a pervading sense that all is not what it appears to be. This is a great listen filled with suspense as our central character races with time to perfect an anti-virus in his top-security lab near the nation's capital, all the while uncovering startling secrets about his surroundings, his work, political and scientific history, and even his family-including his brilliant and sexy wife Dara.
This paranormal thriller takes on an eerie, gothic tone as Dr. Collin De Gise-a youthful Nobel Prize Laureate and ex-Gulf War Two commando-faces down the dangerous virus, clashes with high-level government figures in Washington DC, and battles to unravel the mystery of a sinister presence behind it all. Great suspense, an occult mystery that's refreshingly different, an conspiracy thriller with a chilling surprise ending that leaves you with the aura that maybe something like this isn't so incredible after all. It all seems hardly less normal than the dark turn that our turbulent society seems to be taking.

    Loved it!
Where does Subversion rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It is one of the best.
What did you like best about this story?
The voice of the reader, the main character and the chilling surprises.
What does Paul J. McSorley bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
His voice is fantastic and it fits the story, adding to it. His voice has a very nice quality to it.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes! I laughed and cried. It does keep you listening, because it is so interesting.
    Any additional comments?
I highly recommend it. The main characterCollinis mesmerizing and changes as the story progresses. I love that, and I love the surprises at the climax and the strong women (good and evil) characters. Even though technically supernatural, the storyline seems frightfully real as though it could really happen. Look at whats going on today, and you kind of wonder. The authors short story, Lonely Pines, has a similar eerie feel. Id buy more, maybe even in a short novel formfive stars plus!
    Amazing story
All I can say is wow. Just when I thought I had this book figured out it throws me multiple curveballs. This book kept me thoroughly intrigued throughout the entire story. And I have to say the narrator did a great job of differentiating each character, and his angelic voice was nice to listen to.
    Great Book
    Any additional comments?
This is a well written, fast paced book. It kept me listening just to find out what would happen next. The narrator did a great job.
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.
    Fast paced thriller
Loving the combination of science and the paranormal. As always great character development by Manolakas. One of the things I love about his books. Wonderful fast paced thriller.
Great performance by the narrator. Loved it.
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.
    Wonderful paranormal thriller
This is book is technically about a threat of a world wide viral pandemic, but there is a lot more to this book.

    Members Reviews:
    Disappointed!
I've read Christopher Reich's prior novels... This one was not at all in the same league... Lacking luster, a little flat
Only have a problem with the reader not the story
What did you love best about The Prince of Risk?
I liked having at least 4 threads running at once. The writing was good and kept me interested.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
I thoroughly enjoyed the plot. With multiple threads running the author keeps you engaged because you do not know what happens next but you care.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I enjoyed the scene where the FBI raid does not go as planned.
    Any additional comments?
The readers pace is painfully slow in the first few chapters. I almost quit the book for this reason
    A disappointing effort
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I'm a big Christopher Reich fan, but this book was my least favorite. Great premise but horrible execution from a respected author.
What could Christopher Reich have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
The prose was just blah...seemed like he phoned this one in
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
The narrator was fine, I've enjoyed Paul Michael, not his fault
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The story line was promising...great trailer but no meat.
    Insightful
I really enjoyed the thriller mixed with economic and political insights. Perfect for me!
Fun Thriller but Characters a Bit Wooden
Fun thriller with some hedge fund action thrown in.

    Release date: 11-26-13
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
Big business is booming and state institutions are thriving thanks to advances in genetic engineering, which have produced a compliant population free from addictions. Violent crime is now a rarity. Mayhew McCline, a major corporation that analyzes global trends, has hired a genius: Jayna.
A brilliant mathematical modeler, she has the ability to produce accurate predictions that are both good for the world and good for the bottom line. Her latest coup: finding a link between northeasterly winds and violent crime. When a string of events contradicts her forecasts - including a multiple homicide on the wrong day - Jayna suspects she needs more data and better intuition. She needs to understand what it means to be "normal," so she disrupts her strict daily routine and, unknowingly, sets herself on a path that leads to new encounters, new experiences, and - perhaps most dangerous - new emotions.
    Members Reviews:
    Very nice book
What made the experience of listening to A Calculated Life the most enjoyable?
The mind of the heroine of the story is quite fascinating...genetically developed to have a very logical and mathematically-inclined mind, she also possesses an excess of curiosity and burgeoning emotions that will later get her in trouble. Watching her develop was very interesting. The narrator was perfect for the character.
What other book might you compare A Calculated Life to and why?
It may be because I am influenced by what I am reading now, but A Lady of Devices has a theme of a young woman out of tune with her culture and trying to break free.
    Any additional comments?
The pace of the book is good for listening to. Sometimes I find books that are enjoyable reads too slow to enjoy listening to and land up listening at 1.5 or double speed to long drawn out parts.I gave the story only 4 stars because I usually save five stars for very intense and heavy reading (when it deserves it).
    Deserves more stars
This was a very different book, and the narrator captured the characters very well. I liked learning about how Jayna became more than just a simulant automaton and started to develop a sense of self and interest in the world around her instead of just doing the job she was created for. There are "born" humans and simulants and the narrator does a nice job of keeping a flatter affect for the simulants vs. the more active voices of the born humans.
Could not continue listening to this book.
What disappointed you about A Calculated Life?
I just could not get the jets of this book. I guess I did not read the reviews close enough. Waste of Points or $$
    Great concept, well executed
I feel sorry for those who don't think they enjoy science fiction so therefore won't give this book a try. Like all good science fiction, it is ultimately about the human condition, about ourselves. It's a super concept and was delivered very well. I'll keep an eye out for future books by this author.
Enter a different kind of mind....
What made the experience of listening to A Calculated Life the most enjoyable?
The author's conveyance of the mind of a created human, with no history and limited emotional range, but enhanced reasoning abilities was utterly convincing.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Not really a "page-turner" in the sense of edge-of-your-seat suspense.

    Quite a story
I haven't listened to any of this author's books before, but I certainly will order another one in the hopes that it will be as interesting as this one. I was a little concerned at the slow, long narrative arc in part 1 of the download. I felt it was a little slow and considering the novel was billed as a mystery, it was a little too long for the mystery and murders to get going. The character development is good, though, and that takes most of the first part. Then, the novel gets going big time in part 2. The ending is brilliant...so brilliant I caught my breath! Completely unexpected, by me anyway. This novel deserves a listen.
    Good performance. Holds your attention.
The story line is a variation on one used many times. Even so, it is well written and the performance holds your attention throughout. The ending made listening worthwhile.
the worst piece of writing ever
the worst piece of writing ever, awful story, awful characters; just awful, awful, awful, awful, awful, awful, awful, awful, awful, awful. Had to give it one star to write a review but it should have been a negative number star.
    Absolute rubbish
What disappointed you about Winter Chill?
Utterly trite melodrama. I couldn't get through more an hour before giving up, and I rarely give up. Ludicrous implausible plot, all written in lacklustre overdone style.
What could Joanne Fluke have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
    Not write it....
What three words best describe Christopher Evan Welchs voice?
    Perfectly reasonable narrator
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Winter Chill?
All scenes from the very start.
    Any additional comments?
This truly is one of the worst books I've ever read/listened to. I can't make any further comments to expand on that!
    What the heck?
I have read a lot of Joanne Fluke's Hannah Swenson books and they are entertaining. This was anything but! I was 3 hours in before anything "new" happened. Then ok I wanted to see "whodunit", well surprise, I still don't know. That was hours of my life that I will never get back. I just didn't care about any of the characters practically from the beginning.
Don't waste your time or your money.

As Zen is drawn deeper into the complex and ambiguous mysteries surrounding the discovery of a skeletal corpse on an ossuary island in the north lagoon, he is also forced to confront a series of disturbing revelations about his own life.
    Members Reviews:
We have found the perfect narrator for Zen and...
.... the publishers who really should know better, think any good narrator will do.
Cameron Stewart may be an OK straight reader and he totally fails to capture Michael Dibdin's Zen.
Especially as this is Zen returning to Venice.
It is not a more complicated plot, it is not a darker view of the world.
It is the total failure of Cameron Stewart to capture the nuance, the humour, the niavety of our world weary chauvinist, the blatent hypocracy and corruption that flatens the story and characters.
What would he do to 'Cosi Fan Tutti' ( I shudder to think).?
So far no one can best Michael Kitchen as narrator for Dibdin's Zen.
    Language is great
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
yes the story is good and the ability of the author to communcate with exciting vivid language is excellent.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The plt was not up front, Therefore the plot was a surprise.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The description of who people and places were were all enthralling.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I read this book mostly because of the language.
    Any additional comments?
    It is a must read.
    Worst narrator for female voices
This barrator is a disaster. Doing female voices is always hard for a male barrator but this narrator is the worst I have heard. I had to stop listening to the audiobook it was so bad. But I also blame the producer(s) for the Zen series: Poor choices were made for narrators and in some novels the narrator speaks with a heavy Italian accent in English although the characters are Italians speaking in Italian. My advice is dont buy any of the series until they find a new narrator and rerecord the series the way it deserves to be done.
The past is another country, you can only visit.
I am sure I wrote a review earlier. This is one of Michael Dibdin best. Aurelio returns to Venice on a little detour to what perhaps he should be doing. Things have changed and although Aurelio gets to the root of it all, he isn't wanted. He loses, he wins, he is nowhere. Just goes to show you can't go back, it isn't there anymore. This book puts it so nicely. As Aurelio puts it at the end of the book speaking to some tourist, "I'm sorry, I can't help you, I'm a visitor here myself", or something like that. Cameron Stewart isn't Michael Kitchen, but does an adequate job. Love the book, love the series. Worth the listen too.
    interesting but not great
not a super compelling story or characters but it kept my interest (just). probably would recommend something else.

    Publisher's Summary:
China and U.S. relations are at an all-time low. This audiobook will only make it worse.
Coming off the heels of The Back Door Man, Dave Buschi is back at the adrenaline game with Proportionate Response another thriller, another riveting story.
Marks and Lip. One is a former Marine, the other is a former NSA cyber specialist. They know how to take down a target. You fix eyes on it, hit it, and exploit the site to find your next target. You proceed that way until you eventually take down the entire structure. Doing the "consultant" gig now, they're still tracking down threats. But this threat is a doozy. A mysterious threat, known as Client 487, is intent on planting seeds of dissent that will dismantle our very way of life. The more Marks and Lip discover, the more they realize this has been going on for some time. And it's ugly.

Proportionate Response Is An Action Packed Read...
Wow. This novel was like being at an action flick in the big screen of your mind. Well researched (I honestly wondered if the author has a history of military or black ops in his past). That's realism. The script is cryptic, truncated, fast paced. The read is like being shot at with words. Intriguing plot with genuinely evil characters that justify that proportionate response. Buschi is good at letting your imagination fill in the blanks and does not assault you with gratuitous gore or tasteless raunch. A real good guys vs bad guys scenario and you cheer for the good guys and wonder right to the end if and when they'll succeed and what will be the price. No spoiler here: buy it and read it to find out. A buy signal from me if you like action genres. The kind of book you don't want to put down...
A really good entry into the action genre
I read 2 books a week, mostly in the mystery/action/thriller/detective areas. This is an entry by a relatively newer author and I think it is definitely a nice addition to the community. I'd compare the book's main characters Marks & Lip as sort of a cross between the Marshall Karp Lomax & Biggs series with a little Mark Greaney's Court Gentry (For Marks.) I read some of the negative reviews on the book and while everyone is entitled to their opinion, I think I've read enough books in this genre to differentiate between something shallow, with characters I don't care about or believe that doesn't hold my interest vs. something with a good combination of characters & plot. This book definitely fell into the latter category with me. I enjoyed the story, the camaraderie between Marks & Lip, the humor, and the overall expertise that each brings to the table (Toughness in battle) and Lip (computer savvy.) Overall a great story and worth the read.
    Back to Back Home Runs
I haven't read two back to back books by the same author in years. Dave Buschi's second novel, Proportionate Response, ended this streak with a vengeance. I downloaded it immediately after finishing The Back Door Man and thought I would read a few pages. I was immediately sucked back into the fold for another incredible ride on Buschi's techno-thriller bullet train.
Buschi showed his talent for merging the technical world with the physical one in The Back Door Man. He takes this perfectly balanced game to another level in Proportionate Response.

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
Best-selling author Carolyn Jess-Cooke has written a brilliant novel of suspense that delves into the recesses of the human mind and soul - perfect for fans of Gillian Flynn and Lisa Unger. The Boy Who Could See Demons follows a child psychologist who comes up against a career-defining case - one that threatens to unravel her own painful past and jeopardizes the life of a boy who can see the impossible.
Dr. Anya Molokova, a child psychiatrist, is called in to work at MacNeice House, an adolescent mental health treatment center. There she is told to observe and assess Alex Connolly, a keenly intelligent, sensitive ten-year-old coping with his mother's latest suicide attempt. Alex is in need of serious counseling: He has been harming himself and others, often during blackouts. At the root of his destructive behavior, Alex claims, is his imaginary "friend" Ruen, a cunning demon who urges Alex to bend to his often violent will.
But Anya has seen this kind of behavior before - with her own daughter, Poppy, who suffered from early-onset schizophrenia. Determined to help Alex out of his darkness, Anya begins to treat the child. But soon strange and alarming coincidences compel Anya to wonder: Is Alex's condition a cruel trick of the mind? Or is Ruen not so make-believe after all? The reality, it turns out, is more terrifying than anything she has ever encountered.
A rich and deeply moving pause-resistor, The Boy Who Could See Demons sets out to challenge the imagination and capture the way life takes unexpected turns. In the best storytelling tradition, it leaves the listener changed.

(Chevy Stevens, author of Still Missing)
"Top-notch psychological suspense.... Beware what you think you know. It might be only the demons talking." Lisa Gardner, author of Touch & Go)

HOLY COW!!! Give me more, please!!!
    Any additional comments?
This book was worth the credit, for sure. I love to read or listen to a variety of books, but this one is at the top of my list. The narration was performed by male and female characters, in Irish dialect. This was different for me, and I was a little unsure if I could get used to the male character. However, as the male character developed, it was perfect for this complex boy. The only complaint for me is it had to come to an end! I am seldom as intrigued by books, but this one hooked me from the beginning. Until the very end, I kept asking "where is this going"? And, trust me, it is worth the wait. I would advise others that while this book centers around the unique relationship this boy has with demons that only he can see, it isn't like any horror story I've listened to. It had a creepiness all its own, without leaving me terrified. Kudos to the author, performers, and Audible!
The ending caught me so off guard. It's amazing
    Narration was top notch.

Bored and listless, 15-year-olds June and Val are looking for fun. Forget the boys, the bottles, the coded whistles. Val wants to do something wild and a little crazy: take a raft out onto the bay. Visitation Street - An odd place to visit
This book defies categorization, in my view: part mystery, part class struggle study, part mood piece. Interesting characters and situations, the story told in overlapping vignettes from various character's points of view. It all adds up to a well written slice of life in a seemingly contemporary New York neighborhood, its residents alternately struggling not to slide into poverty, or struggling to rise from it.
The narrator seems sluggish at first, but stay with him - he improves as the story revs up and the characters develop. He does a good job with the variety of character types, each distinguishable without specific identification for each conversation. it may also be just really good writing.
Don't listen to this when in the mood for fast-paced action. It is in there, but this is a story primarily about the perception of individuals about their surroundings. A very satisfying character study.
    Snipets
What would have made Visitation Street better?
I enjoyed the character descriptions but there were just too many and the book didn't really add up to be a mystery.
Would you ever listen to anything by Ivy Pochoda again?
No, I will not be looking for any other of her works.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Ray Porter?
    Yes
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Just overload. There were so many characters introduced and some of them were really interesting. It was kind of like jumping into an ocean of people with a microscope. The people that you pass by are examined closely, but just briefly because you're still falling.
    Any additional comments?
There was some really good writing in the book, but for me, I'm all about the mystery. And this book seemed to fail in that respect.
    Dark complicated interesting
I really enjoyed listening to this story -- narration was excellent and had exactly the right tone for this nourish tale ...

What she can't remember might kill her....
"She doesn't remember a thing," Rolph snapped into the phone. Andrea froze. His back was turned away from her. He didn't know she was there, listening. "It's been six months, for God's sake. If you harm one hair on her head, I'll contact the authorities. My father would be disgraced, but that will not deter me."
Now Andrea couldn't move. There was no doubt Rolph was talking about her. She wondered how his father, the French Ambassador, could be disgraced.
His voice modulated to a threatening whisper. "This is the end. Otherwise she goes directly into protective custody, and I spill my guts. You've lied to me, made me into a damned traitor, and I'm angry enough to do it out of spite."
Now Andrea knew there were secrets he was keeping from her. What did he mean about protective custody? Was she in danger? The one blank spot in her mind was a mysterious car crash. She didn't know how she had landed at the bottom of a cliff in the Santa Monica mountains of Los Angeles. She remembered the fabulous party in Beverly Hills that night, but try as she might, she couldn't remember the sequence of events leading to the accident.
Rolph's last words chilled her, "I have nothing to lose. I'm a dead man."
