scifi cliffhanger of the first degree!
Awesome story and characters, what a cliffhanger! Glad this is a series and LJ keeps writing! Audio performance not the best, but you get used to it.
    A fascinating and immersive story
I picked this book up knowing it was the second in a series, but that did not prove to be any obstacle to enjoying it. The background was filled in neatly without yards of tedious exposition and the story moved along at a good pace.
The reader does an excellent job with the various character voices, maintaining the differences and representing their physicality very well, but occasional it seemed as if he was reading the text for the first time at recording. This was not enough to prevent my enjoyment of the book, however, and I'll be looking for the third in the series.

    tedious
Would you try another book from Joshua V. Scher and/or the narrators?
    narrators, probably; author...no
What could Joshua V. Scher have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
    stop with the wandering dialogue.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
    performance was average
What character would you cut from Here & There?
    all of them
    Any additional comments?
book would go from a dry technical treatise to a rabid paranoid rant, with a few fantastical daydreams thrown in just to confuse the situation.
    Didn't finish
Doesn't flow and too nerdish. Female narration was boring and the French accent excruciating in the extreme
    Quite Clever
What made the experience of listening to Here & There the most enjoyable?
Narration and story were very solid, and the whole concept once it started unfolding when from strange and improbable to possible and acceptable. I liked the moment when it changed in my mind.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I don't like to give or lead any reader, but I will say there are a couple who are seriously twisted.
What about the narratorss performance did you like?
Good, even sound quality. Helped me enjoy the story through some of the complex reasonings
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I will only say I did have an ah! moment, but I won't say when.
    Any additional comments?
Well above average these days. Good writing and quite a unique idea.

    Publisher's Summary:
Burning with rage from the combat losses at Cilicia, the Black Legion wants payment, and Lord Cyrus has a target that will satisfy even the most greedy of his warriors. It is a target so rich that he wonders if the mercenaries will even have enough ships to carry off the loot.
Hundreds of ships and thousands of mercenaries start their epic journey through the deadly Su'bartu Maelstrom that will take them to the heart of the Median Empire, a region protected by the vast Imperial Fleet. Few ships have ever made the journey, but this is no mere fleet of traders. The battle hardened mercenaries of the Legion are interested in just one thing, loot, and they intend on finding it no matter where they have to go or who they have to kill.
Xenophon and his comrades face greater danger when divisions in the fleet threaten the entire operation. Xenophon and Glaucon are forced to choose, but where do their loyalties now lie? To the Titan they live aboard, or the Legion and its desire for blood and spoils that knows no bounds? On the eve of greatest battle of their lives, the Legion may tear itself apart before firing even a single shot.
Assault on Khorram is the second book in the Star Legions series from Michael G. Thomas, the best-selling author of the Star Crusades series. Previously published as the Black Legion series.

    Black Legion: Assault on Khorram
I very much enjoyed the first book and this second book in the series continues on following adventures of Xenophon, Glaucon, Roxanna, and Tamara as elite warriors in the Black Legion. You learn the real reason for putting together the Legion is not the reason they were told. The Legion starts to come apart and the four characters find them selves fighting to leave a ship headed in the wrong direction and not knowing who they can trust for sure. While they battle trying to find a way leave the ship and rejoin the main force. The main force has jumped, continuing on its way toward the real goal of the Medes noble who hired them, Lord Cyrus. While the Legion has problems between its many Terran factions Lord Cyrus's people, The Medes have their own problems. While seeing them selves as superior to the Terrans thier race is filled with cut throat, back stabbing intrigue and treachery.
I really like most of the author's works
I really like most of the author's works, but the entire Star Legon's premise feels like he just took an old Roman (or Greek, or whatever) history and transferred it to spaceships. I found it exceedingly boring and not very creative at all. It was like reading a history book end everywhere a sailing ship was supposed to be mentioned he substituted a spaceship.
    Great
I concur with the other five star feedback so only leave mine to show support and encourage timely future editions. I thank the author for a great story!
Second book in the series, kicks the door open on the action!
I enjoyed the "re-telling" of a classic tale woven into the first book but did feel that the pacing in the first 1/3 of book #1 was a little slow.Book #2 does not suffer from this problem.
Michael G. Thomas is at his best crafting Epic battles while also having a knack for close quarter combat and likeable characters. So I was pleased to find that book #2 in what is sure to be a five book (or more) set has picked up the pacing a bit.

    Publisher's Summary:
"As penance for not being honest with his admiral, Captain Tanner Scott has been sent on a boring routine maintenance mission of checking the RIM boundary buoys one after another, and that lets him enjoy his Scotch in peace.
Imagine his surprise when a Sleeper ship suddenly arrives on the RIM, and he learns that the thousands of alien Sleepers are all children! While making that known has already gotten RIM confederacy realms fighting, the real hidden problem is the secret that a virus infects the alien Sleepers.
Finding out the Sleeper's secret is one thing but the news of what that virus could bring to the RIM and what it might do is the real reason that a powerful RIM royal realm wants to enslave the alien Sleepers.
When Captain Scott realizes that another RIM planetary realm has also learned what the virus could be worth, they too try to take over the Sleeper ship and that means that Tanner can't as per usual self-medicate with Scotch but instead has to overcome the RIM's adversaries and somehow save the alien Sleepers too!"

A mix of video game and book cliches
What would have made Sleeper Ship better?
Original concepts. This book copies several other stories' and video games' concepts and even names of technologies.
What do you think your next listen will be?
    Nothing by this author.
Which character as performed by Eric Martin was your favorite?
I think the tribals on the sleeper ship were nicely done.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Even though there were copied concepts, they were fleshed out pretty nicely.
    Any additional comments?
If you write a book, and you copy technologies and other concepts, at the minimum, change the names.
    Very Good First Contact Storyline
This was another one of those audiobooks that I listened to through the night just to finish. I thought it sounded interesting from the description, but you can never fully appreciate how good it will be until you dive in.
This had a little bit of everything... Politics, space tactics, and a first contact scenario. First contact stories tend to be my favorite for some reason, and this one didn't disappoint.
I started with this book (the second in the series) but the author did a decent job with making this its own independent story. There were a few references to the previous book that were brief in the beginning, but I didn't feel at all lost.
The story begins with a drunken Captain beginning what is meant to be a punishment mission repairing sensor stations on the border of the Confederacy. One of the stations they are repairing previously detected a very large ship traveling at slower-than-light speeds, but was unable to report the find due to damage. When they finally catch up to the gargantuan ship, they discover that it is a "sleeper ship" (similar to another previously encountered decades prior) with thousands of aliens in cryogenic suspension fleeing their home world.
With multiple factions out to claim the new colonists, their technology, and their secret to long-life that could prove priceless, the Captain must mediate and provide a voice of reason through the hostile (and sometimes violent) negotiations for resettlement of the colonists.
Narration was good as well. In my opinion, a good narrator never distracts from the story.

    NOT a The Martian ripoff
    Any additional comments?
I received a free audiobook from the author in exchange for a honest review. So my comment here would be longer than usual. But my view is not impacted by the gift. And I do like the book.
This book has a somewhat unfortunate name. With Andy Weir's book of very similar name standing at the center of Science Friction and even Hollywood's spotlight lately, it is easy to mistake this book as a cheap rip-off of the same genre. I can assure you that this is not the case. Other than also happening on Mars and paying quite a bit of attention to technical detail, it is a whole different book, with a totally different storyline. (It did mention a Watney Building...brought a smile to my face. Not sure if intentional or not)
Also about the name, having the "Conspiracy" in the title kind of spoiled the story. It led me to think everything protagonist encounters is some sort of conspiracy. It let my imagination run wild at all the possibilities, so was a little disappointed when the conspiracy wasn't as elaborated as I had imagined.
On to the story itself, I think it's pretty good. The world is setting quite convincingly 60 years in the future. Autonomous cars, 3D printing, Hyperloop, drones, VTOL and other hot topics in mid-2010s are commonly seen. Although after a few repeated mentions it does feel a bit too intentional. They also make the book less timeless and clearly show which era when it was written. And...Skype? Really? In 2070s?
The plot itself is interesting. The conflict is quite well defined and explores a world where automation has eliminated the need for some people to have work. The characters have just enough room to demonstrate their own personalities (development, on the other hand, is not quite there. The book is just too short for that. But I'm okay with that)
I was expecting some follow up on the earth part of the story, but the Chekhov's gun still didn't fire towards the end. Turns out a sequel is in the plan. Will look forward reading it.
The audio book version is well produced as well. The narrator (Chris Abell) has just the right tone and speed to keep me engaged along the way.
Classic Conspiracy/Coverup with a Scifi Twist
This was a good twist on your typical story of a conspiracy by rich elites. After reading the summary I thought this book was going to follow the path of so many stories before it, but I ended up being pleased and drawn into the story by the new approach and the interesting sci-fi twist to a classic conspiracy plot.
The story begins with a NASA engineer (John) observing the project that has consumed years of his life, Project Bakersfield, launching into space. He and the rest of the agency are horrified when a freak accident results in it falling back to Earth and causing the most devastating man-made disaster in history.

    Members Reviews:
    A Unique Post Apocalyptic/Dystopian Read!
The cover initially drew me in for this book, but it was the description that hooked me. The idea that water is a thing that isn't freely available was fascinating.
Matt Freeborn is a Wellar. It's his job to find clean water in a world devastated after a nuclear war. It's a thankless and deadly job. He is constantly on alert for road pirates, cannibals, mutants and even private armies, but the one thing he dreads above all are the distillers. These "people" literally drain whatever water a body holds and uses that as their water. Matt has never encountered these but on his current journey, he not only faces them, but he has to escape from them.
This. Was. Freaking. Awesome!!!! Not at all what I was expecting but absolutely brilliant. I love anything post apocalyptic or dystopian and this has a bit of both in it. It's also a really unique and entertaining story. I loved the overall Mad Max feel of the desert chases with the pirates, they were action packed and engrossing!
The plot was interesting and gripping. I absolutely hated the distillers yet they sent a shiver down my spine every time they were mentioned. They are a terrifying and quite disgusting thought but it added to the overall feel of the book.
The characters are all well written and developed and I loved each one. Matt is a no nonsense, kick ass man with a very cool weapon! He doesn't take any prisoners and isn't afraid to do what's needed!!
Everything about this entertained me and I really really hope we see more set in this world and these characters. It's a fast paced and delightful read and one I'd recommend highly!!
A.W. Miller did a great job with the narration. He had the right tone at the right time and was able to ramp up the tension when needed. I will have to check out more by this narrator!
*I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review, via Audio Book Blast. This in no way affects my thoughts."
    Looking for book 2
What made the experience of listening to The Weller the most enjoyable?
I really liked the story line. I thought it was interesting to listen to. Mark is a Weller. A Weller finds clean water for people after a nuclear war. It's a dangerous life for the Weller's on the road always looking for clean water and trading with the people that are left from the war. Mark has many run ins with the people he comes across. So the book never seems to really slow down.
This is a great book. I recommend listening to the Weller. Hopefully the author makes this in a series.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Weller?
When Mark had seen his friend in trouble and decided to enter into the fight to one save his friend. Than after to help his friend. Things got very crazy for a while. I was on edge when they were captured by the distillers.
What about A.W. Millers performance did you like?
    Great voice for The Weller.

Two Okay Stories and a Great Concluding One
Series 1 of Vienna is kind of reminiscent of a show that might run on the USA Network. We're given three stories falling bounty hunter and assassin Vienna Salvatore around the galaxy and provides three separate one hour-"ish" stories. "Dead Drop" finds Vienna aboard a Space Dreadnaught sent to take out a fleet commander. However, she quickly finds her life imperiled along with the rest of the ship. This story is okay but nothing spectacular with a bloated middle and some bizarre ship names.
"Bad Faith" is the second story and it has Vienna becoming involved in a battle between religious cults, the leader of one cult being played by Doctor Who Alum Frasier Hines. Unfortunately, despite good acting, the story spends too much time on its ham fisted critque of organized religion to actually be enjoyable.
However, Vienna's creator Jonathan Morris writes the best story of the set that finds Vienna on a planet where assassins are hunting each other down with the last one standing being crowned the winner. Admittedly, this plot is derivative of, "The Hunger Games." But Vienna is telling an assassin she formed an alliance with the story of what happened after the last story when she went after the man who killed her family.

good story but narrator killed it
The narrator characterizations, especially of the ship's engineer and the "always smiling" tone really detracted from enjoying the audio book. I would like to hear her normal voice. It's probably quite pleasant.
A girl on a mission Im just not sure what that m
Rei is a girl on a mission, with everything taken from her she is a wild card. Now, shes the captain of a starship shes doing anything she can to keep afloat.
I dont like to speak ill of anyone or anything. I personally did not like the narration of this book at all. I had an incredibly hard time getting into it because I found the narrators voice jarring. I understand that the character is a YA female, but the voice just felt forced and overly-animated. This is genuinely the first audiobook Ive listened to in a long time that I could have skipped and read the story.
The story was great, I found it a quick read (it is meant for a younger audience) with some great characters in it. Rei was hard to pin down for me. I couldnt figure out her motives throughout the bookwhich caused me to question why she was doing some of the things she was doing.
Im not a fan of fantasy I could go at length about the differences between Sci Fi and Fantasy and why they shouldnt be categorized together. Im usually a Sci Fi purist but, the author did a pretty good job keeping me interested even though she was mixing Fantasy into my Sci Fi.
This was another one of those books that has a cliff hanger ending/not-ending. I miss the days of a book that has an ending.
If youre looking for a quick YA Sci-Fi tale with some Fantasy twisted in I dont think this will disappoint.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
    Had real potential
At some point I may try to read this book again in Kindle format, but I had to stop listening because the narrators voice drove me crazy. The narrator really does make a HUGE difference when its an audiobook. I have the same issue with one of Stephen Kings books, and I'm sure that is plenty successful so if you read this narrator, I am sorry if I hurt your feelings I'm sure your a very nice person.

Story is about the scary looking guy on the cover art. He commands zombies. Reminds me of the book Mutated by Joe Mckinney. My criticism would be similar to that book, although no where near as harsh. Things are just getting a bit over the top. I think the author is running out of ideas.
Why would his human henchmen go along with him? They themselves aren't brutal, thankfully they are portrayed realistically. But he is brutal to them. All it would take is a bullet when he turns his back.
And the hybrids; beings with super powers. How do you get super brains when combining dumb humans with even dumber zombies? It's more impressive when regular mortal humans are trying to survive. I can only hope they are sterile and die off. I want the human race to survive, not replaced by these freaks.
But I keep reading because I love the characters, the bantering, love, loyalty and humor between them.

Rico Cruz is an overweight cop drowning his sorrows in whisky at a local pub when the first zombie guts hit the fan. The war with the undead is short-lived in a decisive victory by the living. The world is forever changed, though, and a third of the population is stricken by a mysterious illness.

    Overall great book!
The story line was really great. All characters stayed in true form and didn't stray or become confusing like other books. The story didn't jump around either. I will say the narrator did a decent job but I would have spent a little more money and had someone else read the book. I like that this is apocalyptic and not another POST-ap book!
    Not bad but read better
As far as the story goes it was ok. Read better but also slot worse. The narration however was terrible. Very little emotion put into it and at times I found it hard to distinguish between the characters voices. Not the greatest book but ok.
