Top class sci-fi

Book 4 continues the series and is the same high standard as the previous books in the series, Fast paced and full of action, and yet still time for a little human interaction. Book 4 answers many questions posed previously, and yes raised more to be answered in future books.

YES I want to read/listen to the next book, and Scott is now on my to read list.

Mark Boyett does a wonderful narration in fact he's probably a perfect fit in.

What a waste of time

The story is mediocre, at best, but I kept listening because the narrator is good, and I was hoping the author was going somewhere. I really WANTED to like it because there is quite a bit more content in this series and another by the same author who I hadn't listened to, but where this book finally "went" was...

Zombies are one thing, but the world turning into Al Gore's most horrific claims in under a couple years, even though scientists can't get a predictive model right to save their lives, THAT I can't buy. A very enjoyable book to hear

It was my first book with such a duration and I really enjoyed it. I heard it with breaks but always it took me seconds to get back to the climate of horus heresy and on what this book was all about

Honestly found it quite boring and not gripping.

Struggled with this book. I love the Horus Heresy Series but this one is my least favourite, feeling like its just pushing action down your throat for no reason other than action. I think it's the pacing I have issue with.

Good but quite overflowing with hyperbole

A lot of good and a lot of dull hyperbole. You definitely have to be on the right mood in order to fully enjoy this book. All in all a solid part of the whole.

Definitely one of my favorites!

*Spoiler Alert*

I loved this audio book. Its just the aliens, and the missions, and the characters, that all mesh together into a fantastic cohesive story. And of course Luke Daniels, a great voice actor, who should be in Hollywood right about now. Come to think of it, these books should be too. Youll love hearing him voice the aliens, Manic, Bender, Rade, Fret, Lui, Shaw, Surus, and all the other characters. And youll love the words that Isaac Hooke has put into their respective mouths.

There is this awesome military Sci Fi storyline where Rade and his Argonauts have to penetrate into the mothership of an alien armada, retrieve the Alien Empress herself, and get out alive with her as prisoner. How awesome is that? Its a very cool underwater (acturally, liquid methane) space faring species they have to deal with, and they underwater modifications to their mechs. The liquid methane environment provides some interesting elements for them to deal with during their military operations.

Dont miss this book, or this series: too good to miss!

this store was a bit dry

felt the story was sort of a clone of the last one.

3 stars as I was a bit bored.

The banter was a bit dry and forced between some of the characters.

The performance was good though sometimes his voice can make me go to sleep.

Insightful and entertaining!

I am a long time fan of Hugh Hosts and it was great to be back in his head again. The stories were all very entertaining, if at times weirder than others. I enjoyed both narrators and especially each afterword from Hugh himself.

Hopefully a new start of more to come

It has bin 2 years since H. Howeys last work in fiction appeared here, i'm very glad to see anything by this point and i hope its not the last for another 2 years.

I planned to give this book 4 stars like most others until somewhere in the middle i stumble upon a story with a very controversial ending. I have no doubt that many people will dislike it and give this work a low rating because of that. To me this points out that its written to be a great story, not to be liked by the majority of people.

In general i'm not a huge fan of short stories, they tend to be lacking and are mostly second rate stories that are not good enough for a full novel, but with this release i'm wondering why half of this stories are not worked out as full novels, there too good to stay this short.

Howey Does It

An astoundingly thought provoking and imaginative collection... Most collections are hit and miss, this one is all hits... Love the unique thought processes and scenarios delivered to us w/ encouragement to consider and cogitate... Stories off center and kilter intriguing and teasing dexterous minds... Youll wanna give some little, or large, thought once done w/ each... Some wont like the authors notes following each, but I dug them tremendously... Narration is very good... Fans will gobble it up, and if youre a neophyte to the Howey creations this could be an excellent appetizer to get started on your way....

A great disappointment...

I get that authors need to kill off well loved protagonists from time to time... Im a SOIAF reader, doesnt bother in me the least if its done in a way that ends an arc, or begins another in the course of a story.

People die, thats real.

But, the way you did it, building the backstory of the assassins, like its a different arc, and using them as a blunt instrument.

The story is somewhat weak, but the reader is fantastic. She sparkles and bring character to sometimes dull and awkward dialogue.

Nothing new

The dialogue between Trinity and her computer is the same as Rick and Nick. The story is boring.

Right Up There With The Best In The Series

Excellent listen. Loved the story. The narration was good but had some room for improvement. My major sticking point was the performance in relation to the female characters and the dreadnought. Still very good but could have been spiced up with either some more sound effects/voice modulation for the dreadnought and a female narrator for at least some of the female parts.

I was a little worried when it looked, initially, like it would be a anthology but it has a single major storyline told through a number of different viewpoints. Overall it comes together nicely. The story is not as contemplative as some the early entires in the series but miles above the bad ones. It has a feel of gravitas and epic scale that is sometimes lacking in the large scale novels. None of the characters are really super touching but each has their own points. I recommend.

Iron within. Boredom without

Tallarn is a decent enough book, collecting the Tallarn novel and short stories in one volume. Of these Executioner is the best though it ends abruptly and the series never really recovers. Like Damnation of Pythos it's a serviceable book but doesn't do much at all to forward the Heresy story, and can be safely ignored if you want to save your credits for the meatier novels.

Admittedly its not an offensive novel - Battle for the Abyss and Outcast Dead remain the series low points - but it doesn't introduce any interesting characters or even lore. There's precious little story and it's credit to John French he sustains interest in such a slight meal. After the events of Angel Exterminatus this would have been a fantastic opportunity to study Perturabo and give him the same depth of character as Lorgar or Fulgrim.

Instead its almost a standalone - with no new revelation about the Primarch, a guest appearance by the Alpha Legion and some other equally forgettable events. It's a shame, as Perturabo is one of the more fascinating of the Traitor Nine and Tallarn could easily have been a breakout novel for him (Angel Exterminatus belonged to Sharrowkyn).

The gold standard for Iron Warriors remains Rob Sanders 'Iron Within' and this is what you should be spending your credit on. Tallarn is only recommended for completists

strange order of books

it seems strange that the first two books aren't the other way around as events in the second are mentioned in the first. good storey overall and well performed too. well worth a credit with such a long run tine and several stories to enjoy in one purchase.

Great Political Intrigue, Poor Show Piece for Adeptus Mechanicus

Right off the bat I read this book so I could familiarize myself with the Skitarii of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Instead what I got was a passable political intrigue storyline and a great focus on a Skitarii named Stroika.

The problem is every other character is bland. Stroika has a great backstory of being a normal human being with tattoos marking what augments he wanted and where. The rest of the Skitarii Princeps dont get enough character development except for one Rust Stalker who actively looks for loopholes in his commands so he can kill more.

The narrator is as good as always(he has done a lot of Black Librarys catalogue) and does great robot voices.

A cool 40k story.

This is a fun quick listen with a good performance by the narrator. Get it!

Wonderful fun

listening to the audio version of this story is as enjoyable as reading it. Kate does a marvelous job voicing Valerie and Robin. Now just to wait for the next one.

So many characters! Excellent Narration!

Okay this series started out really great, but with addition of 35 plus characters it has become to confusing to keep track of them all and has ruined the series for me. So unfortunately this is my final book in this series.

If you can keep track of who everyone is in this series then this is a great for you. It is just too much for me.

The narration is absolutely fantastic! Love Kate Rudd in this series.
