Unable to fit in, he does the best he can, helping his father and mother on their farm. His life changes when the mountain near their farm awakens. Believing he is the only one who can quiet it, he retreats to the mountain to watch over the village that shunned him.

He knows his time has come when the mountain begins to tremble again. What he doesn't expect is a group of younglings who suddenly appear in the hopes of saving something called Christmas. When the mountain erupts, he never expects to awaken on a strange planet lightyears away, or to meet an unusual woman who sees beneath his deformity to the warrior hidden within.

This collection includes the bonus novella A Dragonlings' Magical Christmas, in which the Dragonlings Roam and Alice have suddenly disappeared. Now their parents are in a race to find them before they're lost forever.
    Members Reviews:
The primary story is great, the second one has potential
I would have enjoyed the youngling's story more if the kids'dialog didn't sound like Jar Jar Binks. Having raised 4 boys, the dialog was unrealistic and distracting.
Still, I happily own most of S.E. Smith's audio books and a lot of her ebooks. I enjoy her writing, usually, and her attention to detail really helps you to feel like you're a part of her story.
David Brenin does an excellent job, as usual.
I still would recommend this book to fans of this author, but for new fans...this is not the best example of her capabilities as a writer. She usually has strong dialog from realistic characters.
    OLD DRAGON FOR CHRISTMAS!!
What made the experience of listening to The Old Dragon of the Mountains Christmas the most enjoyable?
THE EASE WITH WHICH I CAN ACTUALLY VISUALIZE THE STORY IN MY MIND. YOU FEEL FOR HIM AND EDNA. LOVED IT!
What did you like best about this story?
THE LOVE, THE HOPE, AND THE GREAT STORY-LINE.
    Which scene was your favorite?
THERE WERE SEVERAL - I LOVED THE PART WHERE EDNA FELL INTO HIS ARMS; I LOVED THE PART WHERE HER FAMILY ACCEPTED HIM. I LOVED THE PART HOW HE HELPED EDNA'S GRANDDAUGHTER AND SHE HELPED HIM.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
NOT SURE ABOUT A FILM - BUT WOULDN'T A SCI-FI SERIES BE NICE? OF COURSE SOME OF THE SEX SCENES WOULD HAVE TO BE TONED DOWN FOR THE SCREEN.
    Any additional comments?
IF I HAD TO FIND ONE THING WRONG - IT WOULD BE THAT THE STORY ENDED TOO SOON. THAT'S THE WAY I FEEL ABOUT EVERY GOOD BOOK I FIND.
    What a Christmas lol
Now that was quite the adventure those little buggers went on . I laughed and cried until the very end .

    Downhill from the first book.
Immature writing, no new innovative ideas introduced and really harped on the religious aspect. Last hr and a half was a chore to get through.
    Didn't finish
I got through the first book, and enjoyed it some but the second book I actually regret buying. A little over halfway through I removed the download. Some parts were very interesting and others just were not and took up to much time for me. I would find myself distracted and not paying attention. Maybe it's partly because there are now gods, and greater power even in the real world. Tru is just looking like a second Jesus, it seems so unoriginal.
Great Fun and Listen but please....
cease the Fantasy elements....Terry Schott! Stay in SCi FI/Mystery/Thriller . Of course, all these are already written but while I love the story, characters (a lot now), story arc and performance it is fringing on a Fantasy book just like what the other reviewer said.
Ready for more and I See that book 3 is going to be good. The 9 hours flew by
Went from plausible Sci-Fi to unrealistic
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Not really its not my job to change things. I guess it could have been longer but its still alright.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Digital Heretic?
The moment when the book/series went from plausible sci-fi to super unlikely sci-fi. The first book had me thinking "This very well could be how the universe works" but this second book added in things that make it very unlikely. This kinda killed the series for me. I will probably listen to the other books but I am not itching to listen to the next one.
Which character as performed by Luke Daniels was your favorite?
All of them! Luke is such an amazing narrator. He is able to give characters a similar accent but still different enough for the listener to know what character it is.
Could you see Digital Heretic being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Maybe a made for TV series but not anything special.
    Any additional comments?
Luke Daniels is an amazing narrator even if the author is sloppy and rushing to finish a book.
    A large step backwards.
Really disappointed in this book. The first novel caught my attention and had me listening nonstop. I was very excited to continue this unique story. However, Digital Heretic just didn't follow up. With almost zero plot or character development this book seemed like a pure money grab. The conflicts that did arise seemed forced or made up on a whim. I just can't get behind a story where everything falls in place so easily, with no attention to existing plot details. Inventing a new character with superhuman powers?? Sure why not. Switching Danielle to be a completely dependent character rather than an outgoing leader. Sure why not. Just doesn't add up.
The narration was the only thing keeping me going.

    Publisher's Summary:
Clayton Shepard is 249 miles above Earth when the lights go out.
He has no communication, limited power, and an unbreakable will to survive.
His one goal: find his way back to his family.
Shepard is an astronaut on his first mission to the International Space Station.
When a violent blast of solar magnetic radiation leaves him stranded in orbit, he's forced to use his wit and guile to find a way home.
He has no idea what he'll find when he gets there.
SpaceMan is a post-apocalyptic/dystopian tale that tells the survival story of a man and the family he left behind. It's written with the help of former astronauts, NASA team members, and well-respected astrophysicists that give SpaceMan a unique sense of detail and desperation.
    Members Reviews:
    The Martian & a post-apocalyptic tale have a baby
While I might compare this to The Martian (which I absolutely loved, FYI) -- Tom Abrahams' SpaceMan was different. Where in The Martian he was stranded on Mars because of a storm, this story follows an astronaut who is aboard the International Space Station when a massive CME (coronal mass ejection) plunges the station into darkness.
The narration for SpaceMan was done by the amazing Kevin Pierce, who kills it as always. I've said it a bunch of times, but he really has the perfect Post-Apocalyptic voice. I was so pleased to find out that Pierce and Abrahams were teaming up again for this book (and hopefully series). Pierce is able to provide the perfect narration to Abrahams writing style.
The story itself, as with all of Abrahams' stories was perfect. The pacing and writing just flowed so effortlessly. I put this audiobook on last night and wanted to listen for a half hour or so -- I ended up listening for almost 2 hours. And even today, I couldn't put it down. Listening on my way to work, on my lunch break, and any other time I could find time.
The combination of a Post-Apocalyptic world and astronauts is such a fresh and unique point of view, I couldn't get enough. Thankfully, there will be more -- with Descent being written as the next story in this series. Also, if you're curious -- the entire story does not take place in space. You also get to meet his wife and child and a few other people who are around the family. The back and forth from space to Earth was also really different and made the book feel that much more real.
The main character, Clayton, made me laugh numerous times throughout. The way that he kept himself from freaking out or from losing it was so humorous (I won't ruin it here, just know it's funny). And the ability to make a person laugh when the person they are reading about is in a dire situation is a rare commodity.
Overall, the fresh take on post-apocalyptic fiction -- mixed with the humorous main character make SpaceMan an incredibly enjoyable book, and honestly easily a contender for the best book I've read this year (out of 150+).
I received this book for free. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I hate books written about dumb characters doing what they do best (acting dumb) and this book is replete with them. Let's start with the concept of an EMP knocking out power to the world and the subsequent collapse of civilization as we know it.

An exciting continuation to the series
The story moves forward on two fronts, earth-bound and space-bound encounters. It expands on the aliens hierarchical caste system and Darwinian approach for advancement. We also find out more about their technology and motivations for the human cloning program. The battle encounters both on earth and in space are exciting and often have unpredictable outcomes that adds to the heightened interest in the follow-on unfolding of events.
Very much interested in what follows in book 3 after the final unexpected revelation at the end.
    Loved it!
I was waiting for this and only as I checked out Jeff's latest had I realised it was out. Why can't there be a follow button for a series, haha :)
Anyway, so yes. This was a really great continuation of the series. We pick back up with both sides of the story, on Earth and in Space.
Donovan and his team are going through some awful conditions and worse situations to get to the resistance that is left. There were some moments here where I cried, it's so extremely well written that we get to know and love the character in book 1 and yet M.R Forbes delves even deeper with them and makes us feel even more! This book totally pulled my heart out.
Gabrielle and the old Gator... just superb characterisation. Though they go through so much as father and son, as a team on the Magellan they pull out no stops to protect and survive.
This was a totally nail-biting audiobook, the fights the action, the love and people lost along the way. A total must listen.
Only grip would be that the ending was just as emotional as the rest of the book! and I was like OMG what the... you can't leave it like that. You just can't.... haha
Awesome narrator and author, I want the next one. Like now!
    you have me hooked

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    meh
Series started off really good but this book felt a little anticlimactic. I think they stretched out this one and the last so they could make another book but it would have been better as just 1 book.
    Love, Love, Love the narrators!
The story is amazing, great post-apocalyptic series. Each book in the series keeps you interested and wanting more. Having a female & male read the respected parts throughout the book was a great idea. Completely made the series better. I truly enjoyed the fact that each book in the series was exciting in its own way. Highly recommend this entertaining series.

    Awesome.
This is a massive departure from this author's other works but it was just as good. It's a blend of different genres, which can be hit or miss, but it works here. It's kind of like Mad max with a western feel, mixed with a little Stephen King and Lovecraft thrown in. Sounds odd, but I really enjoyed it.
This tells the story of John Henry Booth, a soldier who protects the remnants of humanity from the hellish creatures that have taken over the world. During a mission, things take a turn for the worst and his team are killed, he is the only survivour but is blamed for their deaths. Declared dead himself, he sets out with some questionable characters to get revenge and find out the truth of what happened. It's actually a really really hard book to summarise in my own words because there is so much to this book that can't be explained, it needs to be experienced to enjoy it fully. It is an immensely complex world but one that will grab you and suck you in.
The characters were all well written and developed. The MC was badass but he was also kind, thoughtful and reliable. He really shines with his attitude to different people, like the little girl and the Ghoul. Plus his dedication to his team members was admirable. I also have to give the author props for his imaginative and crazy imagination!!! The creatures and monsters in this were equal parts crazy as they were scary. You seriously have to read it to see what I'm on about.
I have read a lot of this author's books and really loved them, but this one shows much more of his abilities than the other ones. The writing and world building was amazing and really complex. It's the type of book that you will need to concentrate on but also one that takes no effort to enjoy. You will find yourself immersed in a magical, desperate, desolate world yet it will captivate you and bring you on an unforgettable journey. It definitely defies categorisation, genre wise, so should appeal to a wide variety of people.
In all, this was a fast paced, action packed and addicting read. I finished it last week yet still find myself remembering details of the world daily. It may not have been as funny and witty as his other works, but this was an amazing read and I devoured it.
Jeffrey Kafer absolutely nailed this book. He brought the characters and the world to life. He definitely knows how to tell a story the right way and is a narrator that never fails to deliver!
I received this for free via Audiobook Boom. This in no way affected or influenced my thoughts.
    Like a lost Lovecraft book

    Wow highly recommend
If you like game of thrones. Star Wars. Yea this one is for you. This is absolutely perfect sf. For me it was unpredictable the dynasty goes on and their is more to come. The gods are still at it and when you think their is no problem along comes one big one. Marshal Zindu is highly missed in this second novel of the dandelion dynasty. Cannot wait for the third
    Teen Chicks vs. the Barbarians
While there are many moments where the world built in the Grace of Kings is revisited and intelligently, even awesomely expanded, the reader must be prepared for the unfolding that all the battles and strategies to defend or conquer the world almost entirely rest on the shoulders of tween and teen girls and one or two women over 20 years old. The male characters from book 1 really dont matter in book 2 unless they are villains and those men the reader admired or hated in the previous book exhibit a huge a loss of spine and at least 30 IQ points. Still, if one can get beyond this implausibility, the story continues very satisfactorily. I like the Sci-Fi and Fantasy genre because while one usually knows the gender/species of a character, that identification usually is not the key emphasis of the entire adventure. This book tends to go beyond political correctness to a rather embarrassing emphasis, thus lessening the impact of the necessity of balancing a male dominance of this genre in the opinion of some readers. Personally I like to be grabbed and enthralled by characters I care about facing challenges and adventures in another place of being and feeling. Liu does enough of this to overcome his rather silly gender and age bias to warrant continuing reading the series. The end of this book did grab me enough to continue reading this series and reading this book is a must to continue understanding the series. I think if you realize the "girls rule" aspect and forget any implausibility that the Dandelion Empire rests of tweens, you will like the book.
A worthy successor to The Grace of Kings
What a great story! I can tell that Mr. Liu is playing the long game with this series. I have the sneaking suspicion that this series is going to be the next greatest epic Saga. Just a hunch though :D
    A most interesting sequel.
This book was very well written, covering a staggeringly large setting over more than a decade of time. While I liked the first book of this series better, that in no way means that this addition to the series was less than amazing.

    Great story!
I'm really enjoying this series. I can't wait for the 3rd book! I downloaded the audiobook and I love the narrator.
    Completely Riveting
Amazing follow-up to the first story in the series. Very fast-paced plot that keeps you in the edge of your seat. The world-building is incredible - so unique yet so believable. Character growth keeps things interesting, and plot twists keep you guessing the whole way.
    Joe Hart does it again!
I love this series. It's a long listen which is good because you get your money's worth. The book is well written. Zoey, the main character is frustrating at times because she's strong and determined but yet she has this "woe is me" thing that goes on throughout the book. I like the adventure it feels like I'm on when I listen to this series. I can't wait til the next one.
    Loved this one!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I really enjoyed the first book but I thought the second book had a lot more plot and was so interesting to listen to. So much happens and I loved following Zoey's Story.
Which character as performed by Dara Rosenberg was your favorite?
Dara Rosenberg was AMAZING. She captures Zoey's tone and had me along for the entire ride. I absolutely loved this and can't wait for the 3rd one!
    Excellent sequel
What made the experience of listening to The Final Trade the most enjoyable?
Having read the prequel a few months before, I was delighted to hear there was a follow-on. It didn't disappoint, we are brought through the fraught existence in a post-war world where young females are much sought after.

Would you have the mindset to survive?
To provide for and defend the ones you love at all costs?
Willing to confront the depravity of man?
This is a true story, it just hasn't happened yet.
Book one of this new post-apocalyptic survival fiction series, 36 Hours, provided the listener a glimpse into the rapid decline of society once word of the catastrophic solar flare racing towards Earth began to spread.
Book two, Zero Hour, continues to follow the obstacles faced by Colton Ryman, his wife, Madison, and their teenage daughter, Alex. In 36 Hours, the Ryman family and the rest of the world was thrust into the darkness of a post-apocalyptic world. A catastrophic solar flare brought with it a blast of solar matter in the form of an EMP, leaving America in darkness.
The Rymans weren't preppers and had no concept of what prepping entails. They applied common sense, logic, and a will to survive to their decision-making as they prepared for the post-apocalyptic world created by the EMP.
The dangers they face are not from the solar flare itself, but from their fellow man. Who can they count on? Who is a threat? The words of Colton Ryman's grandfather repeated in his mind.
Never underestimate the depravity of man!
Note: This book does not contain strong language. It is intended to entertain and inform audiences of all ages, including teen and young adults. Although some scenes depict the realistic threat our nation faces from a devastating solar flare, and the societal collapse which will result in the aftermath, it does not contain graphic scenes typical of other books in the post-apocalyptic genre.

    Is This a Joke??
JUST BECAUSE IT IS THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT, DOESN'T MEAN IT IS THE END OF THE WORLD.
Akart hits the ground running, with the action. Akart can write and he writes good action scenes. I gave book one four stars for story and five overall thanks to Kevin Pierce's great performance. Pierce continues to give a great performance in this book.
    Robert Heinlein
It is my understanding that Robert Heinlein wrote STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND to make people think. To make people more open minded. Part of me wonders if Akart is trying to make conservatives see themselves in a different way. You have to be blind to not see the numerous hypocrisies in this story. It seems as if they were put there on purpose. I kept waiting for their to be a epiphany moment in which the main character sees what he is doing is wrong. Instead in the last hour it got even worse. when the main character shows himself to be a total racist. It was not necessary, except the author seemed to want to make a political statement against BLACK LIVES MATTER.
    Hypocrisies
They are numerous, but let me go with what I remember. This guy is member of a Neighbor Association. He hates it and the liberal bankers, IRA agents and psychiatrists that run it. Anyone who wears a suit is considered an idiot. I have never been rich enough to live in this type of neighborhood, but it is a free country and I am pretty sure he could have lived somewhere that did not have an association. He and his daughter loot the neighborhood and that is okay, but others who also loot are viewed as bad guys. At one point they almost get caught looting by another group of looters.

It is 1943, the third summer of the new war between the Confederate States of America and the United States, a war that will turn on the deeds of ordinary soldiers, extraordinary heroes, and a colorful cast of spies, politicians, rebels, and everyday citizens. The CSA president, Jake Featherston, seems to have greatly miscalculated the North's resilience. But as new demonic tools of killing are unleashed, secret wars are unfolding.
The US government in Philadelphia has proof that the tyrannical Featherston is murdering African Americans by the tens of thousands in a Texas gulag called Determination. And the leaders of both sides know full well that the world's next great power will not be the one with the biggest army but the nation that wins the race against nature and science - and smashes open the power of the atom.
