In this video I talk to Robert Jacobson about the impacts that gambling mechanics have had on video games and free-to-play mobile games in the last few decades. Due to the unregulated nature of these games, we've found that the gambling mechanics are built into these games in such a way as to be actively trying to get players addicted and spending more money through in-app purchases and pay-to-play models. The Free-To-Play mobile game model has always been to extract as much value from the customers as possible and get them addicted using gambling mechanics that really aren't regulated at all. The same exists within the video game space. Gambling mechanics with no limit on how they can be used to addict players. Robert Jacobson has been the Executive Director of the California Council on Problem Gambling since 2011, and his unique perspective on responsible gaming is derived from both his personal and professional experiences.Robert worked in the gaming industry from 1998 to 2010, for both Las Vegas and California casinos. His casino experience includes gaming operations, marketing, project management and human resources. Robert also sits on the advisory board for the California Department of Public Health’s Office of Problem Gambling, has served as the President and Treasurer of the Board for the National Council on Problem Gambling, and has served on the Gambling Policy Action Committee, a committee to advise the California Gambling Control Commission.
