Pollster Darrell Bricker and journalist John Ibbitson discuss their Donner Prize-shortlisted book, Breaking Point: The New Big Shifts Putting Canada at Risk, examining Canada's mounting crises. They explore deepening generational divides, potential sovereignty referendums in Alberta and Quebec, the broken immigration system, and strained federal-provincial relations. They also assess whether Prime Minister Carney's government is addressing these challenges, noting his understanding of the issues but questioning actual progress.

Kevin Birn, oil analyst and head of carbon research with S&P Global, says the conflict in Iran has permanently altered global energy markets, pushing countries to prioritize energy security and supply diversification. Even if a peace deal is struck and the Strait of Hormuz reopens immediately, he argues it could still take months to reconnect damaged supply chains, clear vessel backlogs, and restore disrupted production across the region.

Former senior public servants Jim Mitchell and Kevin Lynch discuss their Donner Prize-shortlisted book examining Canada's governmental dysfunction. They diagnose corrosive imbalances plaguing Ottawa, including excessive PMO centralization, diminished ministerial authority, and political communications dominating policy delivery. Mitchell and Lynch argue Canada's prolonged underperformance stems from how government operates, not just its policies. They advocate for empowering ministers and MPs, streamlining bureaucracy, eliminating internal trade barriers, measuring public sector productivity, and rebalancing power between political staff and the professional public service.

Amber Ruddy and Keith McLaughlin say the latest controversy surrounding Alberta’s separatist petition is rapidly escalating beyond a simple referendum debate, particularly after the alleged voter-list breach and doxxing of former premier Jason Kenney. Speaking with Alberta Edge host Falice Chin, Ruddy argued the episode undermines the separatist movement’s credibility, while McLaughlin warned the turmoil could deepen divisions inside the UCP. Despite the tensions, both pointed to unusual alliances emerging across the political spectrum in defence of a united Canada.

Laura Miller, head of public policy and communications at Uber Canada, discusses the fragmented landscape of ride-sharing regulation across Canada, where neighboring municipalities can have completely different rules, and why that matters for both drivers trying to earn income on a flexible basis and residents trying to get to medical appointments or simply travel home safely. Laura walks us through the emerging provincial frameworks in Quebec, British Columbia, and Newfoundland that are expanding access to underserved communities, and explains why standardization doesn't have to mean centralization.
