He examines the concept of "variable geometry" in diplomacy, universities as Canada's "infrastructure of solidarity," and the critical role of trust in international relations. Wong addresses research security challenges, the need for deeper university-business collaboration, and argues that universities must articulate their value proposition as contributors to economic prosperity, democratic discourse, and societal advancement in an era of unprecedented change.

Amanda Galbraith, co-founder and president of Oyster Group, and David Coletto, founder and chair of Abacus Data, join Sean Speer to discuss the Canada-U.S. trade war's impact on Canadian politics. They examine Prime Minister Mark Carney's rising popularity and whether it stems from his personal appeal or voters rallying around incumbents during crisis. They also debate Pierre Poilievre's strategic challenges as opposition leader during a national emergency, his recent U.S. media tour, and whether he should shift from daily combat to articulating a broader governing philosophy.

Giacomo Prandelli, the Switzerland-based founder of The Merchant’s News, explains why Brent crude’s return above $100 may be different this time, as the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve runs low, refineries run hard, and the Houthis threaten the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, another major Middle East shipping route. He also explores China’s potential return to the oil market—and where Canadian crude fits into an increasingly strained global energy system amid our trade war with the U.S.

In this paid subscriber-only edition of The Roundtable, Rudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer discuss the low quality of debate in Canada regarding Prime Minister Carney's approach to the ongoing trade war with the United States. The country would be in a much healthier place, they argue, if there were more latitude for constructive pushback rather than labelling any dissent to the government's approach as disloyalty. They also preview next week's upcoming Canada Investment Summit.

Ian Lee, associate professor at Carleton University's Sprott School of Business, argues Canada's retaliatory tariff strategy against the United States is fundamentally flawed. He contends that Canada's vastly smaller economy and heavy trade dependence on American trade make it far more vulnerable in a prolonged trade war. Lee advocates for returning to negotiations with the Trump administration, while simultaneously pursuing domestic structural reforms including eliminating interprovincial trade barriers, developing natural resources, and reducing corporate tax rates to strengthen Canada's economic position. He warns that Trump could cancel CUSMA in its entirety.

Stephen Frank, President and CEO of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association, discusses how Canada's life and health insurers manage over a trillion dollars in long-term assets and can play a crucial role in addressing the country's infrastructure deficit. He explains what makes projects "investable" from an insurer's perspective, why Canadian capital flows abroad, and how regulatory certainty and government policy reforms could unlock significant private investment in nation-building projects, defence assets, and critical infrastructure across Canada.
