Rudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer discuss recent reports from the Globe and Mail of a potential Canada-U.S. trade deal that could come before the upcoming APEC summit. They discuss how this sectoral trade agreement would likely cover steel and aluminum through quota systems, rather than tariff elimination, while notably excluding major industries like autos and lumber. They explore potential concessions Canada may make to secure this trade deal, and question how these compromises align with Prime Minister Carney's rhetoric about Canadian independence.

Dwight Newman, professor of law at the University of Saskatchewan, discusses a landmark B.C. Supreme Court decision that recognized the Cowichan Tribes' Aboriginal title over urban land in Richmond, B.C.He explains the legal implications for property owners who received letters warning the claim could affect their ownership rights and the tension between modern property ownership and Indigenous title rights. He also explores how this legal precedent could influence land ownership across Canada, and how cultural movements around land acknowledgments and "land back" campaigns have informed judicial decisions.

Jeff Guthrie, the president and CEO of the Canadian Credit Union Association, discusses the significant but underutilized role of Canada's credit union network in the country's financial services ecosystem. Ahead of their Hike the Hill event in Ottawa this week, Guthrie explains how the unions are being constrained by provincial regulations that prevent them from operating nationally and competing effectively with major banks, and argues that streamlining federal continuance processes and embracing regulatory proportionality could unleash credit unions as a homegrown source of financial competition.
This episode is presented in partnership with the Canadian Credit Union Association.

David Harris, executive vice chair of the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy, discusses his must-read book, Antisemitism: What Everyone Needs to Know. He brings light to the alarming rise of antisemitism across the Western world, how antisemitism is fundamentally a non-Jewish problem, and how it serves as an early warning system for broader threats to liberal democracy. He also emphasizes that combating antisemitism requires clear political leadership, a comprehensive approach addressing all sources of hatred, and a renewed commitment to the fundamental principle that all people are created equal.

Rudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer discuss Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre's recent letter highlighting a $42 billion federal deficit benchmark for the upcoming November 4th budget. They argue that this position represents a fundamental shift where the Conservative Party has now accepted the former Trudeau government's deficit spending levels as the new baseline, effectively abandoning the balanced budget consensus that once dominated Canadian politics. They discuss the economic consequences of normalized deficit spending, and warn that Canada risks following the path of France and the UK, where unsustainable fiscal policies have forced painful austerity measures or tax increases.

Rudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer Foreign Minister Anand's recent diplomatic mission to China and what it signals about Canada's evolving relationship with Beijing. They question whether this represents genuine policy triangulation amid U.S.-Canada trade tensions or a concerning normalization of ties with a regime that has imprisoned Canadian citizens, engaged in foreign interference, and imposed punitive tariffs on Canadian canola exports.
In the back half of the show, they discuss the emergence of a new meritocratic elite around the Carney government who combine genuine professional achievements with a sense of entitlement and distance from ordinary Canadians. They argue that this emerging elite risks creating dangerous blind spots in governance and could fuel the kind of populist backlash as seen elsewhere in the democratic world.
