Trevor Tombe, University of Calgary economist and Hub contributor, breaks down America’s worsening fiscal picture—and why tariffs may be evolving from a trade weapon into a politically palatable form of taxation. He explains why tariff revenue can’t come close to fixing the U.S. federal deficit approaching six percent of GDP, and how the levies can weaken investment, productivity, and economic growth. Tombe also looks at what bond markets are signalling about America’s mounting debt and why the consequences won’t stop at the Canadian border.

Yehuda Kurtzer, president of the Shalom Hartman Institute, discusses the state of pluralism in North America following October 7th. Kurtzer argues for moving beyond survival-focused thinking toward Jewish thriving and excellence, examines the collapse of distinctions between antisemitism and antizionism, and explores the erosion of democratic norms in liberal societies. He addresses the responsibility of pluralistic democracies to protect minority communities and challenges Jewish institutions to remain engaged in building inclusive societies despite rising hostility.

Rudyard Griffiths and Sean Speer analyze President Trump's escalating tariff threats against Canada following the collapse of trade negotiations. They examine why a deal that seemed nearly complete fell apart at the eleventh hour, potentially due to last-minute interference from Treasury Secretary Lutnick and advisor Navarro. Speer argues the proposed agreement was actually favourable for Canada, preserving tariff-free access for most exports, while both discuss whether rising tensions on both sides make salvaging a deal increasingly difficult.

Preston Manning, founder of the Reform Party of Canada, examines Alberta's referendum on a separation referendum and rising Western separatism. He argues that federal intrusion into provincial jurisdiction fuels discontent across Western Canada, advocating for legislative solutions rather than symbolic gestures. Manning also discusses how to constructively channel populist movements through education and democratic engagement, critiques Prime Minister Carney's approach to regional tensions, diagnoses the federal conservative movement’s ailments, and draws on Western Canada's historical experience with bottom-up political movements to address contemporary challenges to national unity.

Amanda Galbraith, co-founder and president of Oyster Group, and David Coletto, founder and chair of Abacus Data, join Sean Speer to discuss the Canada-U.S. interim trade deal. They examine why the Carney government is accepting tariffs after months of resistance, the political challenges of selling concessions to a public conditioned to expect defiance against Trump, and the unraveling consensus among premiers. The panel explores whether this deal can be successfully communicated, how it affects Carney's political capital, and the implications for Canada's upcoming investment summit.
