A bit of good news this morning as it looks like Elsa is beginning to lose out against climatology and the fact that hurricanes don't do well in the eastern Caribbean in early July.

Elsa is now a category one hurricane as it moves through the Lesser Antilles, bringing a wind gust to 86 mph to Barbados this morning.

We now have tropical storm Elsa out in the tropical Atlantic heading towards the Windward Islands.

The official forecast calls for gradual strengthening and I believe that Elsa will eventually become a hurricane as it moves through the Caribbean Sea. There could be impacts for Florida down the road but those details are not clear just yet.

It looks like we have a new tropical storm trying to take shape well east of the Lesser Antilles that could bring impacts to that region by the weekend. The next name up is Elsa.

The tropics are looking to become quite busy despite the fact that it's only late June. We have invest areas 95L And 97L to watch as well as TS Enrique in the eastern Pacific.

The Atlantic Basin looks to be rather quiet as we head through the weekend but we will keep an eye on a couple of tropical waves as they make their way westward.

In the east Pacific, we will likely be talking about the season's first hurricane - Enrique - as what is now a tropical storm in that region gets its self together rather quickly.

The tropical Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico all look to be generally on the quiet side as we move through the weekend ahead.
