Hyde or Practice

We interviewed Pae White and Alexis didn't spontaneously combust so in general, that's a huge win! She talks to us about finding community in unlikely places during the pandemic, building her studio up from a solo venture to the multinational operation it is now, learning about contracts and looking to friends for advice. Also mushrooms, a lot of mushrooms. This is an incredibly informative and generous interview and hearing her talk about her journey is beyond rewarding. She casually drops working on her piece at the Venice Biennale...I mean...what more do you want?

Strap in guys, we have an incredible interview with multimedia artist and disability activist Sharona Franklin! We'll get it out of the way and say yes, we do talk about how she (one artist, disabled body, in Canada) is taking on Gucci! We also talk about community, support, teachers, education in general, access and a whole mess of incredible topics. When you get to the end you'll see how we had to pull the cord b/c we could keep talking to her forever. She is frank and honest and smart and candid about the realities of her life and work and I (alexis) can guarantee listening to this will galvanize something in you for the better. Honestly. Also, Sharona is moving and as you'll hear everything is more difficult for her so if you have a few bucks you could throw her way, it would be much appreciated. RISING TIDE LIFTS ALL BOATS Y'ALL! This week Alexis and Erika speak with Arts Professional Jane McCarthy and it is a PLEASURE! Jane has a Masters, has worked with museums, galleries, artists, now at UCLA, like...could you ask for a more well-rounded and seasoned interviewee to round out Season 3? It would be a TOUGH JOB! She is eloquent and her advice is SOUND and she is in Hawaii right now riding out the quarantimes so she obviously has incredible decision making skills! Seriously though, her wisdom for biz side of art is invaluable and honestly, this is a MUST LISTEN! OK, until next season!

This week we have the incredible Los Angeles based painter - VANESSA PRAGER - who is a generous with her spirit and knowledge as she is paint to canvas. Prager created an entirely new body of work during PANDEMIC TIMES to show at Diane Rosenstein, (seriously if you're not familiar click through so you know what kind of genius we are talking to) and she told us all about making work now, in the future, being true to oneself and getting rid of toxic people who aren't serving you! Did Alexis fan girl out a little bit? Yes. Do you blame her? No. Listen now and you can fan out too! This is a MUST listen for every creative -honestly this is the kind of advice you can't hear enough. Maybe fave it so you can check back too? Just a suggestion.

In full transparency, Alexis forgot to book a guest this week even though she has a spreadsheet that has all the people who have agreed to do it and we have 5 episodes of Season 4 recorded! Why did she forget? Because the world still feels like it's on fire in LA and she has a square job as well. Is Alexis writing this right now? Yes. ANYWHO, we asked each other what we learned and what our nugget of wisdom was and was pleasantly, and honestly didn't plan it, surprised to find out we were two sides of the same coin! We may get off track towards the end chatting about menial tasks, but stick it out because we promise there is a point!
