Hyde or Practice

Early into quarantine Alexis got an email about a NEW GALLERY OPENING UP in LOS ANGELES called Tyler Park Presents and a few things immediately crossed her mind: WHAT IS THIS INSANITY, OH I KNOW HIM, WE MUST TALK IMMEDIATELY, THIS IS SO EXCITING! Yes, Alexis sometimes thinks in all caps. She also writes in third person. She is writing this. SO she talked to Erika and they agreed to get Tyler on ASAP and because he's a busy guy who just opened a gallery ON HIS OWN during a PANDEMIC it took a bit but we have him now! All of your questions of what, how, where, why, when (now!) and who are answered and this is a must listen for anyone who has or will be making any jumps in their career! Do it! You can! Tyler has advice and it is incredible!

Alexis and Erika speak with Olga Ivannikova of Networking Gone Wrong! Besides the fact that we all need networking refreshers from time to time (WE ALL DO!) on a personal note (this is Alexis) this week (writing this 1/8) has been DIFFICULT and Olga is very VIBRANT and this episode is filled with learning from trial and error and notes for entrepreneurs and tips and tricks and forward moving and laughs and excitement and I'm SUPER happy (Erika is too, we've been texting about it) to start 2021 off this way!

Alexis and Erika spoke with curator AJ Girard this week about finding a place in the art world and what that means to him and how that journey is continuing. Why is it important to him to always be a student? What does he mean when he says "your perspective is perfect"? We are people worrying about other people forgetting Rembrandt? No one is forgetting Rembrandt! Tune in and EXPAND YOUR MIND! The generosity of his journey is definitely worth your time! Heads up - Alexis swears a lot in this one and we didn't beep it out!

Alexis and Erika spoke with Artist Takashi Arai this week about WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW and OOHWEE does he give us nuggets of wisdom! He has a bus, that is a studio, that he makes DAGUERREOTYPES in while he's on the road! How is he using his art to help ease and communicate historical trauma to different communities? How does his research and poetry and bus and art and sci fi all come together? What is also incredible, is he didn't go to school for art, he just is an artist. Alexis flips out for most of this recording, tune in and find out why!

It wasn't long ago that Katherine DeVos Devine was recommending to us Proposals for the Feminine Economy and we KNEW we had to get the author, Jennifer Armbrust, onto the pod and are WE GLAD WE DID!  Jennifer started her career at a punk bar in Portland (as one does) and then opened her own gallery (obviously) and then decided to take late-stage capitalism on (again, standard) and she talks to us about ALL OF THAT! Why is she so brave? What has she learned about her own relationship with work and her body and exchange? It's an INCREDIBLY generous episode and we know you'll be bookmarking it too!

This week Alexis and Erika speak with Connie Matisse, CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) of East Fork Pottery. Connie runs a team of 90! How does she do it? Where are the boundaries? What jargon is being used? She talks about pivoting during stay at home times, the importance of having "just in case" money and adaptive tenacity! ADAPTIVE TENACITY!!! You know how excited we are about these two words being used in conjunction? It's incredible. This is a MUST LISTEN for anyone trying to make a go out of their creative endeavors.

And spoiler alert, prioritise the admin stuff.

Alexis and Erika spoke with Artist Yasmine Diaz this week about WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW! We ask, she answers! We talked about growing up Yemeni in Chicago and how her third culture identity informs her practice. She shared about finding her people, the power of story telling and getting over the fear of failure. What does the fear of failure have to do with collective community? Tune in and find out! Diaz is incredibly generous with her experience and it's an exciting and dare we say, lighter (?), POST-OUTCOME, recording!

To start of Season 3 with a bang we talk with Heather Bhandari - author of Art Work: Everything You Need To Know To Pursue Your Art Career*, an adjunct lecturer at Brown, a trained artist, worked at galleries, consulted for non-profits and now is Program Director at Art World Conference.  Does that feel like too many things for one person to do? We agreed, but we got the low down and she IS WHO SHE SAYS SHE IS! Her wealth of experience is only matched by her willingness to share her knowledge and it is all incredibly generous. We ask the woman who WROTE THE BOOK - what do you need to know? - and she ANSWERED and it's incredible! Tune in to hear her recommendations, her advice, share her experience and GROW!

*Erika LOVES this book! Used it in her fancy PhD thesis! Do not forget that Erika is a Dr. ok?!

This season we are talking about - WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW? - and we answer that question by talking to a lot of people who are VERY smart in ALL DIFFERENT kinds of creative and artistic careers and we make them answer the question! We have artists and business owners and PR experts and curators and and and...TUNE IN TO FIND OUT!

Alexis and Erika speak with Camille Bien. Trained as an installation artist, Camille used her arts education and became an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist. We talk about the traumas of art school, the endless "why's" in crits, and how we found coping mechanisms. Which incidentally is being part of a community and sharing our feelings. This is an INCREDIBLE episode for the times but also forever. How we make our choices and how we support ourselves is so critical and Camille brings amazing insight into these processes.
