  • MJ - Music Artist
When a wide eyed yet novice university graduate released her 2014 debut album “Live Through Me,” she embarked on a journey to develop a new sound and style in the Hip-Hop genre. Her self-produced tracks were filled with patience and experimenting with the unexpected in terms of both sound and flow. Grinding and regrinding since that ambitious debut lead now Houston based rapper MJ to release multiple singles leading to her comeback EP, "The Way Things Were" in November of last year. Now in 2021, she is determined to be the next star in the rap game.

Born in Redondo Beach, CA and raised primarily in Pensacola, FL means that MJ does not abide by those tempted to box in her talents. MJ grew up on the sounds of old school singers such as Luther Vandross and hard hitting Southern rap that ranged from Outkast to Cash Money records. She is developing her own vibe with the assistance of the soulful yet hard hitting Houston, TX music scene. After moving to the home of the Rockets in 2015, she followed up her debut with a hard hitting mixtape entitled “MEEZUS”. Both works can be listened to on her SoundCloud. The mixtape is a more cohesive effort expanding on both the social and personal turmoil MJ experiences in her lifetime.

Collaborating with producer Rob the Matrix has allowed her to grow her own flow on her own terms for her 2020 singles entitled “Falling”, "Houston Strong," and "Coming For That Spot". "Falling" hooks you on a hypnotic trance with confidence over a Caribbean infused beat. While "Houston Strong" and "Coming For That Spot" are lit and hard hitting for the city. The singles lead to her EP "The Way Things Were" which has eight tracks dealing with social activism, feeling good, and more. The EP has garnered a considerable amount of attention especially in the Houston area.

In May 2021, she released “Moonlight”. The track is a smooth mix of Hip-Hop and R&B. Through heavy playlisting and organic promotion the single has garnered over 2000 streams combined on all platforms. Currently she is gearing up to release her next song “Not Girl Summer,” accompanied by her debut music video. She is a rapper determined to leave her mark on the music industry.

  • MATT SIEGEL, author of THE SECRET HISTORY OF FOOD
ABOUT MATT SIEGEL AND THE SECRET HISTORY OF FOOD

It's hard to imagine a time when food was more central to our collective imagination than it is today. These days, what and where we eat says as much about us as the clothes we wear or the places we live; meanwhile, social media has allowed us to project and share our private food experiences with the world as never before.

But our fixation is not new. "As a species, we're hardwired to obsess over food," Matt Siegel explains in THE SECRET HISTORY OF FOOD: Strange but True Stories About the Origins of Everything We Eat (Ecco; On sale August 31, 2021; $27.99). But how much do people really know about the origins-and modern implications-of their favorite (or not so favorite) foods? In this fascinating and irreverent tour through history, he sets out "to uncover the hidden side of everything we put in our mouths."

Are our taste preferences really ours, or were they influenced by the food our mothers ate during pregnancy? How did corn evolve from an inedible weed to a staple of the world economy and an ingredient in everything from gasoline to pan coatings-and did we really domesticate corn, or did corn domesticate us? Are our modern food choices emotionally satisfying us or making us miserable? And why are humans the only animals masochistic enough to enjoy the burn of chili peppers (a food that, ecologically speaking, specifically evolved to repel us)?

Siegel also probes subjects ranging from the myths-and realities-of food as aphrodisiac, to how one of the rarest and most exotic spices in all the world (vanilla) became a synonym for uninspired sexual proclivities, to the role of food in fairy- and morality-tales. He even makes a well-argued case for how ice cream helped defeat the Nazis and how the nickname honey might be better suited for toxic ex-lovers than for people we care about.

THE SECRET HISTORY OF FOOD is a rich and satisfying exploration of the historical, cultural, scientific, sexual and, yes, culinary subcultures of this most essential realm. Siegel is an armchair Anthony Bourdain, armed not with a chef's knife but with knowledge derived from medieval food-related manuscripts, ancient Chinese scrolls, and obscure culinary journals. Funny and fascinating, THE SECRET HISTORY OF FOOD is essential reading for all foodies.

    ABOUT MATT SIEGEL

Matt Siegel has written about food and culture for publications including The Atlantic and the Paris Review. Previously an English professor, he now lives in Richmond, Virginia, where he writes full time and consults with brands in the food and beverage industries. His dog's name is Waffles.

  • Élishia Sharie - Music Artist
Electrifying, daring, and hypnotizing are just a few words used to describe Los Angeles Neo Alternative Rock artist, Élishia Sharie.

Drawing upon iconic influences, like AC/DC and Nirvana, Élishia Sharie effortlessly synthesizes elements of 80’s Classic Rock with 90’s Grunge to create an aggressive, cross-generational sound that she contrasts with an unapologetically soulful vocal, reminiscent of Janis Joplin and Tina Turner.

Her distinct, raspy tone tells a powerful story of pain, desperation, and eventual triumph—a voice previously devastated by vocal trauma that left her entire singing range obliterated. After a 12-year battle to recover her voice and rediscover her confidence, Élishia Sharie emerged from the ashes with her first global release, titled “FIGHT!”. This fiery Punk anthem informs her personal mission to empower her growing fan base to FIGHT! for their own dreams, despite obstacle or opposition.

Élishia Sharie is currently continuing her time travel through the Rock ages to deliver a nostalgic, yet uniquely mutated collection of music, tentatively titled “The Phoenix Rises.”
